Chapter 4: Topsy Turvy Trench
In return for her saving my life, I carried Taylor until the potion kicked in and she turned back to human. She finally changed back completely when we were at the border of the next territory. Entering the next territory was a bit weird. Everything was backwards and upside down. We were looking for a Toucan named Dan.
“Up here! Or, should I say down here!” Dan yelled to us. We looked up and saw him perched on a tree upside down. The earth was the sky and vice versa.
“How do we get to you?” Marah hollered up.
“There is a mirror a few feet a head of you. Just stare in to it and you will be up here.” Taylor, Marah and I looked in to the 4 foot mirror.
A few seconds later Taylor spoke. “How can we tell if it worked or not?” When we looked up, we were on the ground! What was down is up and what was up is now down. Everything switched up on us! Brooke however, was still in the sky.
“Brooke! Didn’t you hear Dan? Look in to the mirror!” I yelled to her.
“I don’t want to see myself all dirty and raggedy!” She whined.
“Fine, suit yourself.” We began walking to Dan. A few moments later we heard Brooke let out a huge sigh. When we turned around she was not far behind us. Marah couldn’t resist a good joke.
“So, did the mirror break?”
“I don’t think so, why?” Brooke asked.
“I just thought your reflection would break it!” Taylor and I snickered to ourselves.
“Ha-Ha very funny.” Bee said in a mono tone.
“Your journey is marked on here. The map shows which territories you must go to first. I hope you have a safe trip and watch out for any danger. You must keep each other close. To reach the next territory, which is the Forbidden Mountains, you must cross the trench, go through the tunnel and from there, look for Pete. You can’t miss him, he is the tallest one there! I wish you all the best of luck and I hope you can master your powers.”
Besides originally being upside down, this territory seemed fairly normal.
We reached the trench and noticed we had to cross one of those wicker bridges.
“Great! I really hope this isn’t like in those movies where it breaks half way across it!” Marah said.
Taylor yelled, “Don’t jinx us!!”
I went first, followed by Taylor, then Brooke. Marah was half way across when we heard a cry behind her. It sounded like a child screaming. She turned around to see a Fisher Cat standing there. The fisher was bearing it’s teeth, and looked about ready to attack.
“Marah!” Brooke called to her. “You can talk to animals! Try to reason with it!”
“What do you want?” Marah began.
“Oh, nothing much.” She told Marah. “Just breakfast!” She started toward Marah.
“But, why me?”
“Do you realize how long it has been since I had a human to eat? Finally I have my chance!” she started on to the bridge when she noticed us. “Perfect! I can have you for lunch, and spread out your friends so I have meals for the next couple of days!”
“Anjulina cut the rope!” Marah yelled to me.
“No!” I argued. “I’ll wait until you’re across!”
“Just do it! You are the main one who needs to destroy the village. We are just here to help! If she kills you then Dypim Trefad will no longer exist!” I sat there thinking about other options. “Anj just do it! If you wait for me to get across then you’ll lose your chance!” she yelled as they crept closer to the end of the bridge.
I looked down at the rocky water below. Alligators were forming, opening their mouths. They were waiting for their meals to be dropped in. I found a small rock nearby.
Using my powers I turned it in to a knife. I started to cut the rope. Before the last strand broke, I looked Marah in the eyes. She mouthed the words goodbye. We watched helplessly as Marah fell to the bottom of the trench. This was the hardest thing I ever had to do.
