Chapter 52
Hunter sighs and tangles his dark hair. Hunter, with his head down, waits for my response.
"Sad, but coping with it all and missing you." Do you know your release date?"
Alone with the chilling wind and snow, he's inside a cozy wooden cabin with food and a bed.
Hunter breaks his neck, his head swaying. "David didn't say," Hunter says.
Of course, David wouldn't tell Hunter when he'd be freed. I'm not upset or terrified of Hunter, just apprehensive and puzzled. I re-fill my cup to keep my hands occupied.
Hunter tells me everything just after finishing my tea and putting the cup on the kitchen table, leaving me stunned.
"I never meant to attack or annoy you, Susan. Lowering training hours and reconciling with our neighboring pack became too much for me. But the pack is crumbling, and reforms are required. But that's not enough. The whole pack has to start again, but that's impossible in this circumstance."
"But it doesn't excuse your actions."
"Something about you rubs me the wrong way. My wolf tenses and raises his fur in protection every time you enter. Sorry, Luna, but a Beta shouldn't be so attached to his Luna."
Hunter glances back, his dark eyes unflinching. That he feels odd anytime I'm with him, I know.
"As if I'm a danger?" I attempt to steady my voice.
Hunter sighs and turns away to comb his hair. "I dunno, Susan. I'm stumped."
I slump back into my chair, the wood cutting into my back, and say nothing else. Hunter sighs and raises his head, adding, " Every time you enter a room, I feel it. I sense a storm approaching, and I must defend the pack. And I'm not sure why." I'm speechless right now after hearing Hunter's description of myself. I-I had no idea he felt this way. From what Neme said, I believed he was missing time with his Alpha.
The issue now is: what can I do to transform... me?
I didn't anticipate the issue to be myself! I had no idea I had threatened Hunter. I've been presuming I'm doing my job as Luna. Because I'm matched to David, do I have to drop a few ranks even if I'm higher than Hunter? My blood boils with rage and bewilderment. My hands on my lap ball into fists to contain my rage.
Insignificant human, never trained like my pack members, never understood the rules of th-this society, how can you feel intimidated by me? My stare sharpens, and I gently rise to stand, forcing Hunter to twist his neck to observe me.
My hands grip the table's edge. Hunter's brows wrinkled as though puzzled by my response. My veins heat up, causing my body temperature to increase and sweat to build on my temples and neck. My head is throbbing, and I need to push it away.
"You've got the upper hand. You-" The searing pain blurs my vision for a few seconds before focusing like a camera on stunned Hunter. "Susan," That won't work when everything around me is on fire, and my mind is killing me.
"No! Let me finish for a second! You have the upper hand, so there's no need to feel frightened or defend my flock from me, their Luna. David and I should guard the members. Your role as Beta is to aid in training and guard the Alpha and Luna!" By the end, I'm panting, and my body temperature is unbearable.
Hunter's eyes widen as I clutch the table. My knees ache. Instead, it's from the anguish and scorching heat my body is experiencing. My legs buckle, and I fall to the kitchen's hardwood floor as my taut fingers release the table. Hunter frenzies out of his seat, knocking over his chair and slamming the table.
"David! Her eyes! She-" Hunter yells but is cut off.
Rushed stomps cease when they reach me. Try as I may, I can't raise my head to see David! The hammering stops as David crouches near me and strokes my hair. "Susan, face me." David softly prods.
I tip my head forward and peek into his eyes. His nostrils flare, but he doesn't respond. Still holding my chin, David calls for someone to fill a tub with cold water.
"David," I gasp as the agony and hammering hit me. His gaze relaxes, and he lets go of my chin to embrace me. His knees hit the floor, and I'm dragged in.
David's smell soothes my head discomfort like a soft hammer if a hammer can be kind. But the combination of my body heat and David's generates an unpleasant comfort. Irritating because of the double heat, yet reassuring due to David's presence.
"Wait, what?" David asks, possibly to Hunter, who was undoubtedly observing us.

A burst of light and the sound of rushing water assaulted my closed eyes. "Wait, Hunter. David growls at his Beta, shaking me.
Hunter remains quiet without speaking to David. When we get to the restroom doorway, David looks worriedly at me. "We'll chat later," he replies to Hunter, looking over his shoulder. On my way down, the water is turned off. A hand grabs for the zipper of my still-on winter coat. "Susan," My eyes flutter. Jessica grins as she unzips my coat. "I'll undress you. You're sweltering." "Okay." My voice is rough and harsh.
Due to my tight physique, undressing takes longer than usual, but finally done, David lowers me into the icy tub of water. The chilly temperature instantly relieves my hot flesh.
David enters the tub seconds later, settling behind me. His back rests against the tub's wall, softly pushing me towards his chest. My eyelids shut again, and I nuzzle into his smooth cloth. Not David. "Hold on till her fever returns to normal. Drape her nude and go into bed. I recommend skin-to-skin contact; it will help her feel secure." Jessica said to David
"Thanks," David says to his mother as she exits the restroom.
I fall asleep seconds later.
