Chapter 51
She looks at my face, then down my clothes, attempting to figure me out. "Wet hair?" She laughs.
My face flushes. Busted. "Be careful. You'll be ill. Full moon festival is in three days." And she crumbles the plastic bags and stuffs them into a cupboard.
Surprisingly, Jessica isn't preventing me from leaving since she knows I'm heading to Hunter. Shaking my head, I exit the kitchen as generally as possible, avoiding a rapid heartbeat and nervous sweat. I open the front door and stroll onto the porch, dressed in my winter gear.
Every step towards Hunter's cabin leaves tracks in the snow from yesterday. I draw the hood of my coat up over my pale face to block the breeze. Fear grips my gut as I approach Scar Guy's assault site.
I'd rather be on the beach than going through the snow. I can see myself in a brightly colored bikini, enjoying a refreshing glass of lemonade and wearing sunglasses to shield the UV rays. I listen for the crashing of waves and birds' crowing. Instead, I hear the biting wind and the crunching of snow underfoot.
Initially, the cold doesn't affect me until minutes pass, and the cold attacks my nose, toes, and fingers. My body shivers, teeth clatter, and I want to be warm.
I don't consider the possibility of becoming lost, lost in circles, or beyond the pack's area. No idea!
Every tree trunk and naked branch are alike. Nothing strikes me.
But I keep going through the snow.
Bringing my hands to my lips, I massage them together to generate friction and bring blood back to my fingers before blowing warm air over the gloves. It's beautiful for a split second before the cold freezes my breath. "Just a few more steps," I remind myself.
Ignoring my cold and bloodless body, I feel compelled to keep going. How can we, the pack, improve if I don't know Hunter's issue?
That's all I need.
Minutes, hours, days, and weeks pass. Nobody knows how long I've been walking. My desire to reach dwindles till a chill, not from cold, runs up my spine. Then David's booming voice strikes me.
Where are you, Susan? He wonders over our connection.
I stop walking and sigh in shame. He has no idea where I'm heading and may assume I'm fleeing as I've done before. I couldn't leave him, that's all.
Insisting he can't detect my anxieties or remorse, I go for a short stroll. I speed up.
But, of course, being part-wolf has its privileges, and David senses my emotions right away. You're a liar. His failure hurts my heart. I rush to convince him that I'm staying. So, where are you, he says, unusually kind and careful. I'm ready to respond when I realize I'm going up a hill and gazing down at a tiny stretch of deserted log cottages.
Susan, David links me up.
A chimney blows smoke into the air, and the front lights are on. Except for Hunter's, the other cabins are empty.
And yet an issue. David. I can feel him urging my thoughts, beckoning me. I can't focus until I create a wall between us.

My thinking becomes tenser as I visualize a brick wall between us. I envision his surprised blue eyes stung by anguish and despair.
I envision his lovely figure tensing and shifting away from me before completely healing and walking away.
Silence.
My first step toward Hunter's cabin generates searing anguish in my heart. But I just ignore it to discover Hunter's ailment. So, when I arrive to his cabin, I look at the door's wooden grains, willing myself to knock. The door swings open, and Hunter stands there, stoic. I squirm and clumsily wave back.
"Um," I respond, unsure where to begin.
In sweatpants and a t-shirt, Hunter shaves his chin and watches my every action. "May I enter?" I ask, pointing to the interior of the cabin and its warmth.
His eyes widen when he realizes it, and he nods but says nothing to me. I latch the door behind me as Hunter steps back and the cabin's warmth hits my chilly limbs.
Hunter turns back and leaves me at the door. My brows furrow as I watch his back move away.
The cabin is tiny inside. The cabin's rooms are sparsely furnished except a bed and a table. I can look into the living room and kitchen from the front door.
Hunter shuts the microwave door and goes over to me. My body leaps to move my chair away from the table so he may sit and drink.
Instead of sitting, he sets the cup in front of me. "Why did you hate me?" I asked.

Hunter looks at me. I wonder what he sees and thinks. A strong or weak Luna? Is he going to lie to me, or will he speak the truth?
He merely stares, and I don't expect him to. But the mental nudges from David will distract me when my barriers weaken. I can't remain longer.
"I'm here to rectify the situation and to tell you I never intended to upset you and your ranking, or create stress in your relationship with David," I say nervously, clenching my frigid fingers. "Susan," Hunter sighs. To him, what I desire is irrelevant.
"No, Hunter, I'm serious," I sigh, shaking my head.
Hunter looks up and stares at me with brown eyes. His face shifts and he leans back in his seat, arms crossed.
"I'm sure my mate misled you. She couldn't keep a secret to save her life."
"She did,"
Hunter's brow raises in shock. Okay, he knows Neme. She did tell me everything.
"Lie. That's why she was sad and lonely."
Hunter growls, his brown eyes flashing crimson like David's. Hunter's can nonetheless captivate a little less vivid and demanding than David.
My immediate impulse is to up and walks away from Hunter, but I convince myself to be cool and move slowly.
