Chapter 49
"What?" I ask as my hands stop on the zipper. David sighs, yet a grin eventually emerges.
"Let's leave. We may get back for lunch." David unlocks the front door.
The sky is still bleak and the wind is still stinging, but being with David is lovely.
"Invite the whole pack, David."
The frozen snow from yesterday night crunches beneath my winter boots as I go towards the boundary line.
David just asked me what I thought we should do for the full moon festival dinner in three days. I advised him to invite the whole pack, but David feared to overcrowd. I smirked since the pack home is a luxury. The home should suit everyone. David protests, but I whirl around, stopping him in his tracks and widening his eyes. "Trust me. It'll be a hit." He sighs in despair, his exhalation frozen. I nod and keep going. "We're almost there," David yells behind me.
We arrive at the border with a bit of a pack waiting for us. I'm not sure why David and I were connected, but I didn't ask since I'm sure David knows.
"Was the fragrance here?" David asks, going ahead of me towards Dasu, the tracker.
David, in dark purple t-shirt and black pants, nods and meets halfway with his Alpha. Whose scent?
"Yes, I did smell it while on border patrol. But it's still there, Alpha." Dasu's black eyes meet me, over David's shoulder. He greets me with a friendly grin and a head nod. I grin.
David seems downcast at me. My brow raises in puzzlement. Whose fragrance, I ask David.
"I wish you were a wolf right now, Susan." David mumbles, yet I still hear him.
"Wait, what?" Then I look at David, then at the rest of the men and women who were probably on border patrol with Dasu.
"David picked up a smell that wasn't one of our members, but we're not sure whether it's the guy who assaulted you," David explains to me.
The masked Guy, the Guy who tormented me physically and emotionally.
I shut my eyes briefly and urge myself to remain calm and not overreact. When I open my eyes, David, Dasu, and the others are curious.
And then I ask, "What's the next step?"
"Keep trackers and members that border patrol this area informed." I'd say warn everyone to be on the lookout for abnormalities. " Dasu responds, and David nods.
The other members agree and start talking about border patrol schedules and who's next in a few hours. David looks around but fails to grin when he sees my face.
It's OK, David says. And I will. I swear.
I trust David since he keeps his promises, but I'm curious how he'll discover the masked Guy. Suddenly, he vanishes, but I know if I relax my guard, he will return, ripping me apart for unknown reasons.
Jessica has returned and is cooking. I finish my dinner. And we wipe our dishes at the sink while discussing how to adorn the pack home. "Good idea, we can do that after dinner if the farm is still open," David grins and kisses my cheek. Then I'm left alone since David has to catch up on stuff.

When I go into my room, I quickly take a warm bath with the lights off. I can see my reflection when I switch on the bathroom lights, but I tell myself not to look yet. When I set the bathtub's temperature, warm water fills the tub.
As the water fills the tub and the stem floats upward, I finally turn on my heel and gaze in the mirror.
My weary face or greasy hair would be noticed fast when I went to the toilet or took a brief shower to clean myself but not get my stiches wet, but never as deeply as I do now. I-I am ugly, tired, and sick of the world.
My neck, which was previously tanned and unstitched, is now red around the stitching, unsightly, and leaves a sour taste in my mouth.
In between the stitching, my fingers jolt.
My thoughts return to that time. Hunter, in wolf shape, attacks David, becoming angry in my way. Hunter and I were never buddies, so I was stunned when he clutched at my neck.
I recall the stinging agony and David's fearful gaze as he transitioned and hovered over me, naked and oblivious.
And I tell myself that I need to find Hunter's home to find out. I need answers to repair things.
After removing my clothing, I carefully enter the tub and bend forward to turn off the water.
My whole body is submerged in warm water. It's calming. The warm water caresses my sore body as I reposition my body.

I'm frozen in the tub, hoping the opposite side of the door will open so I may rest for thirty minutes.
But there's another, gentler, weaker hit. I know it's not David because I can feel his tremendous aura, and he's the kind to barge in on you no matter what you're doing. I know.
"Yes?" I eventually huff out, longing for a break.
I'm getting out of the tub to dry off and open the door when I hear my name. As I re-enter the warm water, my heart cracks in two.
"Enter, Neme." I mutter, unsure of her intentions.
Her half-wolf ears hear me and the bathroom reluctantly opens. Neme saw me nude as a child.
Neme shuts the door, and I hear her body fall alongside my tub. She's resting on the wall between the entrance and the tub.
My feet raise to the tub's knobs, rotating them to let water into the tub before turning them off again.
A sob breaks our stillness beside me in the tub..
