Chapter 27
"What's up?" David sighs, and suddenly everything appears to slow down. David tickles my brow. Suddenly, I feel calm, but David takes his lips away. "She must have changed when she was marked. I'll figure it out later."
David squeaks out of Hunter and my sister Neme's room.
I dash downstairs, Jessica is watching me from the doorway, her eyebrows pinched in uncertainty.
Then David advised me to remain downstairs.
"Neme's shifted." I pant.
Unbelievably, Jessica's eyes widen. "Neme? But-"
Jessica regains control
Jessica braves the cold as we walk through a snowstorm. I can hardly hear Jessica above the wind, but I can hear her mumbles as she pushes through it. "Nearly there!" Jessica yells as she looks back at me.
I attempt to glance around but the snow and wind make it hard. The wind is so fierce that it hurts my exposed skin. The cold already makes my spine tremble and my teeth rattle.
Jessica and I are trekking through the storm, but then I see Nemeon on her hands and knees in the snow. In her single outfit, she can't stand the wind or the cold.
Hunter is kneeling beside her, saying something I can't hear. Daivd seems apprehensive as he stands by.
The trees around us block some but not much wind. I'm about to comfort my sister when David raises his head and looks into my eyes. He shakes his head, asking me not to approach them.
"We must wait, Susan." Jessica says calmly. She hugs my shoulder. I observe her sit in a nearby tree, wrapped in a blanket.
So I follow Jessica and sit beside a tree, waiting for anything to happen.
Neme rests on the snow, eyes closed, breathing properly. Hunter was rubbing his hands nervously.
Neme's eyes flash open, brighter than ever. She cries, pushing her face into the crook of her arm.
I straighten up. Why do shifting hurts so much? She was OK only seconds ago!
Her eyes well up with tears. My heart squeaks. I cover my heart and stroke my chest, trying to soothe the anguish. Neme's body flinches as if kicked.
I leap up, but Neme's body changes immediately before my eyes. Her bones are trembling, her skin expanding, and her nails extending. I scream as a wolf instead of Neme is in front of my eyes. A red wolf with pointy ears and a moist nose. Neme, the wolf.
I stay put. I can't breathe because I'm afraid of what'll happen if I approach her.
David's shoulders slump in relaxation for many seconds. Then he raises his head and invites me over. My body obeys him. I am astounded when I approach David and Neme.
She's lovely. Her fur is glossy. My hands tremble as I softly touch Neme's head. Neme raises her head to look at me, and her ears switch as my hand touches hers. The wolf knows you as Luna. David mumbles to me, his eyes sleepy.
"How did you know?" Neme approaches me.
"Mind-link 'My Luna.""
My heart no longer hurts, but I feel it squeeze. Hunter approaches, Neme goes up to him and kisses his cheek twice. David grabs my shoulder, causing me to spin.

"Leave them alone." "
We exit the woods. My body shivers and my toes and fingers are numb as I go back home.
David and I enter my room silently.
David is already in bed on the right side, watching me. I'm shivering, which is humiliating, so I hug David. I encircle him like a cushion. David embraces his new role as a life-size cushion for me alone. David encircles my hands, kissing the tips and blowing his warm breath over my freezing fingers.
David pecks my fingers again before letting go. I tuck my hands beneath his bareback for warmth. David screams as my icy fingertips hit his heated flesh.
I'm starting to feel my body thaw, so I shut my eyes and go to sleep. David's hand creeps up and begins to twirl a strand.
"Why is a shift so painful?"
David's twisted stops and starts. "Your human self resists change while your wolf self fights with everything it has. That's why Neme was so upset; she was resisting the change."
I strive to be at every member's first shift to support and comfort their wolf.
My brows furrow. "Assist them?"
David sighs as he adjusts my body on top of his. "A useful Alpha ability. I seldom ever use it."
"You eased some of Neme's pain?" I hushed.
"Yes." David ponders. My appreciation overflows my heart. I kiss David's naked chest and say a thank you.
We slumber entangled. Before I fall asleep, David mumbles into my ear, his heart skipping a beat.
A few days later, When I arrive, Neme and Hunter stop whispering. Neme straightens her posture and attempts to grin casually, but I can read her like a book.
Name looks worriedly at Hunter. Hunter sighs in astonishment. "Sure, Neme. You can't stop me." Finally, Neme looks back.
"Would you ask David whether I might join the other pack members in training?"
"Hmm?" I reply cautiously.
Hunter pouts like a kid. Neme then asks whether I would do it now before the day's training begins. I let her push me out. My coat and boats are thrust into my arms, leaving me stunned. "Wait, what?" I inquire aloud.
After putting on my coat and boots, I begin heading to the training fields. Why doesn't Neme ask David? Maybe she's frightened or afraid of rejection. I'm not sure why given she seems to have acclimated nicely to becoming a wolf. Neme didn't come downstairs until halfway. David said Neme was adapting to the mansion's noises and scents. Neme now is hyper-aware.
The next day, she was back to normal, which I was much relieved about.
It's freezing today. Sleet, wind, and more sleet annoy me But it won't change soon since December is practically on the corner.
Awakened this morning by pack members practicing almost nude after going through the final woods. Partners block kicks and dodge blows. It's like a dance. I discover David among the trainees.
When the wind blows, David's gaze softens and he glances at me as if he can smell my aroma. I cautiously approach David, hoping not to be caught off guard. Some pack members grin and continue exercising while others really say hello. "I have a question," I start.
