Chapter Heat
My whole body aches and I have this weird burning in the pit of my stomach that keeps getting worse and worse. Sometimes I’ll feel fine then others it’s like walking is impossible. I don’t tell Roman because I know he’ll make a big deal out of it and really it’s nothing, I probably ate something bad.
As I’m baking some brownies in the oven the burning ignites at the worst it has ever been. I double over and clutch the counter for support. A whine slips through my lips as the heat spreads through my body. I feel like I’m not fire and the only thing that can dim it is Roman, like a tall glass of water. My feet work on their own as I walk out of the kitchen to Romans office where he’s working on paperwork. He looks up when he sees me. “What’s wrong Lexi?” He asks standing. Another whimper slips from my lips.
“It burns.” I whine. His cool hands touch my cheek making the fire in me dim.
“What burns?”
“Everything.” Roman examines me but finds nothing then like a light switch his eyes light up.
“Lexi, I think you’re going into heat.” He whispers. Another wave of fire rolls through me and I let out a cry, clutching Roman for support.
“Heat? Like a dog?” I ask panting.
“Basically.” Roman answers. “It puts unmated females in a frenzy to find their mate. Or in our case to completely mate.”
“It hurts.” I groan.
“I know, baby. I know.” Roman looks torn. “I’m going to call Annie and my mother. They may be able to help you.” He walks us to his desk making sure to keep a hand on me at all times.
“Hello?” I hear a familiar voice answer.
“Mom, I need you and Annie to come over. Lexi is going into heat and I don’t want to be anywhere near her when it fully hits.” Roman tells her.
“Why don’t you just mate?” She asks.
“Just get here!” Roman growls, slamming the phone down. I whine again and back away from Roman.
“I’m burning.”
“I know it hurts baby but I can’t be near you right now.” Roman growls struggling with his wolf. Roman picks me up and tosses me on the couch in his office. “Stay here. I’ll turn the fan on and open a window but you need to stay here.”
“Why?” I ask.
“Because other unmated male wolves will be able to smell you when your heat fully flares up and they’ll try to mate with you out of instinct. I won’t let that happen to you.”
“Please Roman, don’t leave me.” I cry.
“I have to. You’re not ready to mate and I promised you I wouldn’t do anything you weren’t comfortable with.” His eyes flicker between his yellow wolf eyes and his normal green ones as his wolf fights for control.
When Romans mom and sister arrive Roman leaves without a word. Both girls come to the office with cool rags and ice for me but all I want is my mate. Annie tries to keep me distracted but as my heat flares up her efforts are no use. I burn and burn and burn for what feels like days and Roman never comes back. Lynn, Romans mom, keeps everyone who tries to come in out. Finally it becomes too much and I beg them to get Roman. “Are you sure you’re ready sweetheart?” Lynn asks. “Roman can’t come here if you have even an ounce of hesitation.”
“I want him.” I groan out.
“I’ll call him mom,” Annie offers, standing “You stay with Lexi and tell her everything she needs to know.” Lynn nods. When Annie is gone she turns to me.
“Lexi, mating while you’re in heat gives you an even greater chance of becoming pregnant.” Her words temporarily dim my heat.
“I don’t care.” I cry.
“And when you mate, Roman will have to mark you. You will officially become the Luna. You’ll have to mark him too.”
“Fine! I don’t care! Just make this go away!” I yell. “It hurts.” Annie walks In then with the phone in her hand.
“He wants to talk to you.” She tells me. I nod and grab the phone from her.
“Lexi?” Romans voice innights my heat even more.
“Y-yes?” I rasp out.
“Are you 100% sure you want this? Because if not I won’t come.” He tells me.
“I am. I’m ready.” I whisper. He’s quiet for a long time.
“I’ll be there in five.” With that he hangs up. I drop the phone and look at Annie and Lynn.
“He’s coming.”
Roman-
In the morning Lexi is sound asleep in my arms, her bare body pressed against mine and her face buried in my chest. Her favorite spot. With great care I move her long hair to the side and look at the mark I gave her last night during her first heat. She squirms a little so I leave her alone with a soft chuckle. Nuzzling closer to me she laughs too. “It’s cold.” She mumbles into my chest. I hold her closer.
“We should take a shower then.” I comment.
“No. I just want to stay here.” She says tiredly.
“We can do whatever you want.” I tell her softly. We stay in our room for another hour until Lexi decides to get up and take a shower. While she does that I go down stairs and start breakfast. Just as I put the waffles in the toaster there’s a knock on the door. I sigh and go over to open it.
“Maxon? What are you doing here?” I ask.
“I think I found something on Lexi’s dad.” He tells me. My breath seizes. Without a word I let him in just as Lexi comes down the stairs.
“Oh! Hey Maxon!” She greets.
“Luna.” He greets back. She blushes with a smile.
“What are you doing here?” She asks.
“He’s here to discuss some arrangements for the Luna ceremony.” I tell her shortly. I hate lying but I don’t think she can handle the truth right now. Lexi’s eyes meet mine with a glint.
“Liar.” She accuses me.
“It doesn’t concern you.” Maxon tells her. Her eyes narrow.
“I’m going to go over to Annie’s house for a while. Call me if you decide this discussion ‘concerns’ me.”
“Lexi, be careful.” I mind link. She turns with her eyes wide.
“I will.” She nods and turns to leave. “What the hell was that?” She wonders as she goes. I laugh lightly.
“I see that you two have fully mated. Congratulations.” Maxon comments looking at the mark Lexi gave me.
“What is it you found about Henry?” I ask, ignoring him. We sit in my office on either side of my desk.
“I have a witness saying they saw him just a few miles away from our borders. He wasn’t alone either.” He tells me.
“Did they see the other person?” Maxon nods.
“Not much but they could see that he was with a woman with long red hair.”
“How do they know It was Henry?”
“They said the man they saw had a scar on his right cheek. Just like Henry’s.”
“We never told the public about the scar.” I muse. “When was this?”
“Last night.” Maxon says immediately.
“And why wasn’t I told right away?”
“Because your mother told everyone that you were um… otherwise entertained for the night.” Maxon coughs a laugh. I roll my eyes. Of course she did.
“I want my best scouts on the site sniffing for anything they can find.” I order.
“Already done. All they could pick up was the scent of lavender and orange.” He tells me. Lexi’s scent is lavender and rose.
“If there are any more sittings I want to be told immediately understand?” I ask sternly.
“Yes Alpha. I’ll make sure that you are told personally.” Maxon bows his head then leaves.
“Roman?” A distant voice asks through the mind link.
“Lexi?” I think back.
“Annie told me I should try to mind link you. I didn’t know what that meant until she told me.” I can hear Lexi laughing.
“Are you coming home soon? I’m lonely without you.” I tell her.
“Me and Annie are going to go for a run but I’ll be home after that.” She tells me.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea, Lexi.”
“We’ll be fine. Promise.” With that she cuts off our link. I groan and try to link with Annie but fail. Lexi’s outside by herself with reports of her father floating around. I knew I should have told her.
