Chapter 16
Doctor Scull was feeling the pressure from his superiors about the missing child. His superiors made it clear that they were not happy with the way the situation was being handle. These people, who were both military and civilian, had a lot to lose if information got out on what they were really accomplishing under the guise of a surrogate mother program. This project was funded by influential people who were in collaboration with a few select military personnel. These people would go to any length to protect themselves from any accusations that might tarnish their image. He knew without a doubt that he would be the sacrificial lamb offered to save their hides from disgrace. They would simply deny any knowledge of what was occurring at the agency and simple say they were under the impression that it was nothing more than a surrogate mother program.
In fact they all knew what was going on within the agency. It was their think tank that had devised the whole scenario. He was approached by them to lead the project because of his background in genetics and DNA manipulation. He was offered a bottomless research grant to find a way to enhance the human DNA to achieve the next step in its evolution. To literally create a new breed of human with enhanced mental abilities.
To Doctor Scull this offer was what he needed to finish his own research in the human genome. To go beyond the point of known science into a realm of discovery filled with untapped knowledge.
After accepting the position he was offered he was introduced to a military branch of the organization.
These men where high ranking officer operating outside the military protocol. They were men in search of the ultimate weapon. Scull did not know the identities of these men. He knew them only by their voices and group code name Xenograft. These are the members of the organization he most feared. These men where the type that made sure that all evidence that would incriminate them would be eliminated and they had the resources to do it. Collateral damage was calculated into the equation of elimination for this type of men. They cared not for the innocent bystander who unluckily was in the wrong place at the wrong time. They cared more for the power they represented and its continuation.
Scull wasn’t concern about being the sacrificial lamb for them. He had played this scenario though in his head and knew he had to prepare for it. He had a few tricks up his sleeve, one by the name of James. That little secret he had been keeping from the organization. James was nearly an experiment that ended in termination. When he was born he had a deformity, he was missing his right hand. In its place there was a stub the look like a fleshy hook. He was ordered terminated by the doctor immediately. The doctor’s research assistant prepared the syringe with the toxic chemical to end the child’s existence but the child stopped her.
The assistant injected the chemicals into herself instead. Death was almost instantaneous for the assistant though she did scream during the injection. That scream caught the attention of Doctor Scull and he returned to find the assistant dead on the floor. Doctor Scull heard a tiny voice in his mind say “Bad Lady.” He knew right then and there that this child had what he had been trying to create and should be spared termination.
The doctor covered up the death of the assistant by placing her body in a car and driving it into Boston harbor off an abandoned pier to make it look like a suicide. The child was given the name of James and later a metallic artificial hand to cover the hook like appendage. James became Scull private little project hidden away from the prying eyes of the organization.
