Chapter 22
For once they didn't ran into any kind of trouble and within half an hour the massive doors of the docking area opened in front of them and the lights on the flooring guided them out.
None of them had spoken a single word from the moment the explosion went of, almost as if some kind of good-luck spell would have been broken if they had.
"Holy fuck..." Iris sighed with relief, the moment the doors closed behind them.
"You can say that, love..." The big Orc who was seated in the chair next to them, slumped back in his chair and closed his eyes for a brief moment to let the tension that had build up, flow away.
When he opened them again, he focused his attention on the giant hybrid sitting next to him.
"Well, now what, my friend? Where are you going to take us?" But the giant wasn't responding.
Kyr'nac's eyes were closed and his breath was shallow. Iris, who was sitting on his lap, turned quickly and her eyes widened with shock. Her protector was unconscious, at the same time she became aware of all his blood that was spread over both their bodies. She hadn't realized he'd been hurt so terribly, and fear took over.
With her fingers on the side of his neck, she tried to find a pulse, which was not easy given his thick leathery skin. His heartbeat was soft and he seemed to be slowly disappearing.
She looked anxiously at the Orc.
"He needs help, Orgrim...he...he's dying..." She whispered the last words.
"I didn't think so!" Orgrim jumped up from his chair and looked around. Damn where was that medical unit? Damn Yautja with their advanced technique! Why did those people always have to hide everything so well?!
There was only one thing to do and before Iris knew it, he had slapped the giant's face.
She let out a scream as the Orc's fist hit her saviour face and was about to yell at him, when the giant's eyes flew open at the impact of the blow.
"WHAT THE HELL!!"
Orgrim took a quick step back in just case the hybrid would knock the crap out of him.
"You've lost too much blood my friend, and you need to be in the medical unit ASAP and I'd be happy to help you get there if I knew where the hell that bloody thing was!"
Kyr'nac slumped back in his chair and tried to focus.
The Orc was right, those damn weapons had hit a number of vital organs including a ventricle and he felt his energy slip again. Adrenaline had kept him going during their flight, but now that they were safe, his body was slowly giving up.
It took him a lot of effort to raise his arm, almost as if it weighed hundreds of pounds, and placed his hand on the control panel. MED UNIT, he wrote with the strange Yautja symbols and halfway the control room some kind of operating table emerged from the floor.
Meanwhile, Iris had slipped from his lap and was now looking at him with fearful eyes.
Standing next to him she could clearly see the rapid deterioration of his condition and it scared the hell out of her. All over his body, including his head, were large, gaping wounds, the thick skin on his face looked pale, he had literally absorbed everything that they'd fired at them with his body and now he was paying the price for saving her.
Kyr'nac deliberately avoided Iris's gaze, he couldn't handle her emotions now, his consciousness was hanging by a thread, and knew he had to get into the unit as soon as possible.
With much pain and effort he rose from the chair only to fall back again when two strong arms grabbed him around his waist.
"Grab my shoulder and hold on."
With his arm wrapped around the Orc's shoulders, he staggered the short distance to the unit only to collapse headlong on the table, unconscious.
With Iris's help, Orgrim hoisted the rest of the giants' bodies on the table and turned the huge male onto his back.
Almost immediately, a ledge rose on the side of the table and descending from the ceiling a semicircular, partly transparent lid appeared and with a sucking sound the lid anchored itself to the table.
Blue flashes crisscrossed the unconscious giant's body, and with open-mouth Iris watched as his clothes disappeared, leaving him completely naked. Once his clothes were gone, a mask emerged from the rear wall of the booth and was placed over the lower part of his face. Next the booth was filled with a greenish, translucent gel-like substance and the booth light gradually dimmed. On the wall behind the medical booth, a screen appeared showing the giant's schematic body with all his injuries. On the side of the screen were symbols that constantly changed shape and speed, and Iris guessed they indicated the position of his vital data.
Seeing his badly injured body, a sob escaped her.
"He'll be fine, love... I think he got in the medical unit just in time, look..." Orgrim pointed at a small blinking light on the screen.
"His heart rate is stable, just like the rest of his vital signs..."
To his surprise, the little female wrapped her arms around his waist and began to cry heartbreakingly. He knew that humans were emotional beings, but her embrace was quite unexpected and he didn't know what to do.
Suddenly remembering what she had been through for the past few hours, he carefully wrapped his large muscular arms around her and began to rock her like a small child.
"Hey... he'll be fine... I promise. He's a stubborn bastard who refuses to die."
Orgrim leaned back so he could gently lift her chin with his huge hand and look into her eyes.
"He's looked death in the eye before, girl, and he's still there. Besides..., you've given him something to live for, he won't let that slip through his fingers..." And gave her a wide grin, graced by its huge tusks.
"I hope so..." Iris bent her head back to his chest, seeking comfort from the great Orc.
After Iris had calmed down, they went to investigate the ship and soon found the bedroom with an adjoining bathroom but most importantly, the food supply. Their stomachs were growling in desperate need of food and something to drink. They filled up their stomachs and after they were done, Orgrim ordered Iris to the sleeping quarters, as exhaustion was written all over her face, he himself seated himself behind the control panel. Not that there was much to do for him, the ship wasn't taking commands from an Orc and he just hoped the hybrid would wake up soon, as he had no idea what route was set, if one was already programmed...
