Chapter ~ 9 ~

I flung myself onto my pillow, my body sinking into the soft plush of my blankets. It feels so nice, I didn’t realize how tense I’ve been all day. I thought as I rolled over curling up into a ball.

I wonder what I should do about the stuff in the box. Should I keep the jewelry? But what about the strange symbols What language was that?

I closed my eyes and exhaled heavily letting my body fully be in engulfed by the comfort of my bed. Just when I thought I had dozed of a strange feeling washed over me as I lied. My body slowly feeling light like a feather as if all the weight my body had just vanished.

What the why can’t I move? What’s happening?

I tried to move but couldn’t, my fingers feeling numb as I tried to move them… Or at least tried to.

What’s going on? I thought worried as I tried to move. My body feeling as if it was starting to lift off the blankets, the cool breeze of nothing washed over me my eyes feeling sealed shut as I tried to open them.

Suddenly a blinding light engulfed me taking me like a vacuum into its abyss, I could hear my feeble attempts of screams as my body was carried away.

I could feel my body falling, a cool breeze wrapping around me my body feeling limp as I dropped. What’s happening? What’s going on? I thought fearfully as I tried to move. My body feeling detached from me like I had no control of anything.

Moments later I could feel my body heat up like a warm blanket wrapped around me. Slowly my body descended gently touching the ground as if somebody was lying me still on a fluffy blanket.

β€œWill you be able to see what nobody else can?” The voice said gentling almost to a whisper before disappearing.

I could hear the sounds of birds chirping gently in the distance, a cool breeze tickled my face the warm scent of lavender filled the air. Am I dead? I thought as I listened to the rustle of trees, and the sound of an owl hooting.

I wiggled my finger, my heart leaping for joy as I felt it move, the feeling of grass under my hands as I slowly moved my body. I slowly opened my eyes the moonlight illuminating my surroundings, fireflies danced around the grass as the cool breeze carried them around.

β€œWow!” I struggled to say as I sat up.

I looked around trees surrounded me, a small dirt path leading down into more trees, my heart pounded nervously as I looked into the darkness only the starting trees were visible through the moonlight.

The dark night swallowing the rest of the path in a dark void.

β€œWell, this is terrifying,” I said as I slowly got to my feet. Where Am I? I thought as I looked around a small dirt path leading behind me where the moon loomed.

Well, I’m definitely not going down the dark creepy forest path. I thought as I turned around and followed the small dirt path, glancing up every few moments to look at the huge moon.

β€œIs the moon supposed to be this big? I’ve never seen a moon so large that wasn’t in a movie or in the textbooks at school.” I said to myself as I observed it. β€œI guess I’d have to tell mom the moon is definitely not made of cheese, but there are a bunch of holes and craters.” I joked to myself as I remembered asking mom if the moon was made of cheese.

I followed the path to the end of it stopping when I saw a massive cliff, the end revealing a deep dark crevice, some of the trees below visible in the moonlight. β€œI guess not this way either.” My hand pressed against my chest as I caught my breath.

β€œDamn dark and creepy path it is,” I said grudgingly as I turned around. My heart pounding in my chest as I gulped. Wait! Why am I scared this is a dream right? Nothing can happen to me if I’m sleeping, I’ll just wake up. I said to myself as I walked more confidently towards the dark creepy path.

I slowly stopped as I got closer, my heart pounding frantically, as I gripped my shirt. This is a dream, right? Of course, it is just moments ago I was in my room lying on the beautiful fluff of my blankets, there’s no way I would end up in a forest from the bed. Unless I’m dreaming yes, yes this is a dream. I thought as I crept into the dark trees step-by-step, blindly walking praying that nothing was out there waiting to eat me.

I walked silently trying to tread carefully when a crack under my feet caused my soul to leave my body, my heart sinking as I froze in place. β€œOh my God, what was that?” I blurted as I slowly moved my body straining hard to see around me. β€œCalm down Zaphira this is just a dream it’s not like anything bad happens in dreams.” I tried to reassure myself as I continued to walk straight or at least in the direction of where straight would be.

After what felt like forever, I could see the clearing, the moon peeking through the trees as I stepped out of the small forest of trees.

See that wasn’t so bad right? I asked myself as I smiled to myself, my heart leaping in its chest out of excitement. Wow! This place is amazing it’s so beautiful like a painting.

I looked around to see a flood of lights down below, like a shimmering blanket. Wow! It’s so beautiful I wonder if that’s the town. I thought as I looked around for an easier way to descend the cliff face.

I looked around the trees and bushes to see if there was a small dirt path leading down but the darkness blocked my vision.

Damn, it’s really dark I can’t see very well. I thought as I looked around over the edge, small rocks and clays crumbling under my weight as they fell from below.

I took a deep breath as I slowly crouched down, the moon shimmering over a small path that disappeared down into the darkness.

Looks like this might be the only way down. I thought nervously, I could feel my heart pound frantically in my chest.

I looked at the small dirt road that descended downward.

I heard that it was possible to die in her sleep but I didn’t think it would actually happen… And the last thing I ate was pasta damn too bad my last meal couldn’t be something like sushi or Tai food.

I slowly descended down my heart pounding as I moved down dirt and rocks crumbling around me. Yup, this is where I die, this is a very stupid idea. I thought as I gripped onto everything around me putting as much pressure on my foot to prevent myself from slipping.

I looked up at the top of the cliff face, the cliff seeming a lot further away now than I was hoping.

Oh God, I really hope I don’t regret this actually I hope I don’t die. I thought as the earth underneath me gave way causing me to slip.

Damn! What did I ever do to you? I cursed as I slid down the cliff face superfast, trees and land passing me in a blur of motion as I squeezed my eyes shut so that I wouldn’t see my death.

I continued to slide at an unimaginable speed until my body slipped landing hard on the ground with a thud. I could feel the air escape my lungs as I wheezed, I lied still my body throbbing with pain as I slowly regained normal breathing.

Son of a bitch, am I dead now? Did the fall kill me? I thought as I painfully sat up my chest and lungs throbbing at each inhale.

β€œI guess not.” I looked around the cliff face looming down on me as I glanced at it, the long dirt path I fell from carving its mark into the earth as it reached the bottom. β€œI guess that’s why mom said never to roll down the hill, that shit could’ve killed me.”

I slowly rose to my feet looking around at the open field, small farm plots blanketed the open space leaving only a dirt road in between each plot. I could see the lights from the neighboring houses as they lit up the road when I heard the sound of someone singing.

Her voice sounding harmonic as she sang softly.

I followed the sound to an open meadow area near the town a person stood in the middle singing to the moon.

That sound… The song it sounds so… Who is that? I thought as I slowly moved closer to the person, her voice getting louder.

As I got closer, I could see her features, she was a tall thin woman with long brown hair, she wore a long grey dress down to her feet.

β€œThat’s a lovely song.” I’ve mustered to say as I stood behind her, the woman jumped startled turning to me her eyes widening as she stared at me.

Holy shit! Mom? …...I wanted to say my heartbreaking as I looked at the woman, her eyes a soft green shimmering in the moonlight. Is that mom? No that can’t be …. Mom passed away how could… I thought as I tried to think. But just before I could say anything the woman bolted running towards the small village.

I watched confused, the woman, my heart dropping as I watched what looked like my mom running away from me.

β€œWait!” I called as I ran after her. β€œMira?” I called out as I ran to her. The woman turned to look at me as if seeing something scary before turning around and continuing to run, I caught up to her before tripping the woman stood by the tree as if she was hugging. Ouch! Damn that smarts. I thought as I slowly got back up my knees stinging with pain, I struggled my way to the woman when a white light engulfed me as I walked.

I bolted up in the bed, my chest throbbing as tears streamed down my eyes.

β€œMom!” I blurted before I could control myself my hand out in front of me as if to touch her.

Was that really mom or… No, it wasn’t mom it was just a dream with mom in it right?

I exhaled slowly as I moved to the side of my bed my ankle throbbing as I moved, I slowly rose to my feet stumbling as my ankle began to throb more pain circulating my foot.

Shit… What theβ€” I began as I sat back down, my ankle crying at the pain.

β€œHow? Why does my ankle hurt? Did I sleep funny or something?”

I sighed as I slowly rose to my feet lightly putting pressure on my ankle, limping to the bathroom.

I know I have some somewhere. I thought to myself as I checked the drawers and cabinets for the bandage wrap.

Finding the wrap, I slowly wrapped it around my foot making sure it was tight and secure.

Maybe I should put my ankle on the ice first. I thought as I closed the latches on the bandage. I looked down at my foot still confused. I guess it’s too late to put it on ice since I just wrapped it.

I slowly made my way back to my room, grabbing my phone and checking the time my heart nearly dropping when I saw what time it was.

Shoot! I’m going to be late, how am I going to get to school now before missing half of the first period when I can’t even run? I thought as I looked at my dresser which seemed far away.

I grunted as I hopped towards my dresser pulling random stuff, I could find out of each slot like a random prize box.

I guess these match… Then again, it’s probably a little too cold to wear this shirt. I thought as I tried again luckily finding my favorite crescent moon sweatshirt.

I grunted as I limped to the hall, sighing as I got close to the stairs, the pain in my leg throbbing as I braced myself. This is gonna hurt. I thought as I gritted my teeth then rushed down the stairs.

I’m so gonna be late. I thought as I reached the bottom of the stairs.

β€œZaphira!” Blane said sounding worried, moments later I could feel Blane's arms around me. β€œAre you okay? What happened?”

β€œOh,”

Damn Is he Psychic or something what the heck.

Blane helped me to the Kitchen table and sat me down

β€œWhat are you doing here?” I finally asked as I rubbed my foot.

β€œI woke up late and I’ll assume you did to since you didn’t get any of my calls.” He said calmly as he leaned on the wall eyeing me down.

β€œW- What?” I asked confused, my eyes veering to Blane as he tapped his finger on his arm, Blane watched me his arms folded over his chest as he waited for me to say something.

β€œSo, are you going to tell me what happened or my going to have to guess?” Blane finally asked as he put his arms down.

β€œAre you going to tell me why you’re here? And maybe why you slept in your not exactly the type to sleep in especially since you can’t exactly afford to be late.”

β€œI slept in because I was focused on my project for school and it took longer than I thought, also I was worried about you and the strange symbols from the jewelry,” Blane said honestly as he moved his way towards the cabinet pulling out various things.

β€œWhen are you not worried about me, I could be perfectly fine sitting in the living room eating dinner and watching TV and somehow you would find a way to worry about that,” I added. Blane didn’t say anything he just started putting things in a plastic bag.

β€œDo you blame me? I disappeared for the night and I came back to you injured and limping to your kitchen and you still haven’t told me exactly what happened.” Blane said as he put the bag down in front of me.

I looked down at my leg, my mind wandering to my dream of when I tripped trying to go after the woman.

There’s no way, right? I mean how could me tripping in a dream affect my ankle in real life?

β€œI’m not exactly sure myself,” I said truthfully as I tried to move my ankle, the pain throbbing as I just slightly moved it. β€œI kind of just woke up to it hurting maybe I slept funny and twisted it that way.”

Blane looked at me unconvinced he sighed. β€œOkay, then maybe we should take you to a doctor,” Blane said as he knelt down and unlatched the bandage exposing my now sore ankle β€œIt looks pretty bad it's purple what did you do? Jump off a cliff.”

Blane asked as he rebandaged my foot more secure than my attempt.

It can’t be that bad, how can a small sprain cause my ankle to swell that badly? Even if I tripped like in my dream it shouldn’t have gotten so bad so fast right? I thought as I nodded to Blane who then moved towards me.

β€œDo you have everything for school?” Blane asked as he stood by me waiting.

β€œNow I do,” I said grabbing the plastic bag filled with food.

β€œGood I’m going to take you to the doctors first before we go to school just to make sure you can even get to your classes, were already late might as well deal with your ankle while we're at it.”

I nodded in agreement as Blane helped me to my feet, my ankle throbbing I had to grip onto his shirt to ease the pain.

I could feel Blaine’s grip on my arm tightening as he tried to keep me up, I didn’t have to see his expression to know the concern on his face.

β€œAlso let’s get the jewelry maybe I can do some research on the symbols, Mr. Silvers could have some answers He knows a lot about old languages. Maybe he could shine light on the necklaces.

I nodded in agreement as he helped me to the living room placing me on the chair and grabbing the jewelry off the table and handing it to me.
