Chapter ~ 8 ~

β€œWhat do you think is in the box?” Blaine asked as he sat on the couch waiting for me to bring the box.

β€œI’m not sure, whatever it is I hope it answers my curiosities,” I said as I sat next to him putting the box on the table.

β€œWhat curiosities? Is something bothering you?”

β€œWell, I’ve been having these strange dreams that I can’t exactly explain very well and I’m hoping I can get some answers if I open the box,” I said nervously hovering over the lid.

β€œDreams? What kind of dreams? Why haven’t you told me about these dreams I could’ve helped you.” Blaine said looking worried.

β€œI didn’t want to worry you, I thought if I told you about the dreams you would think I was weird especially since their dreams of…”

Damn! Why can’t I tell him? I just want…

β€œZaphira, why don’t you open the box clearly whatever you’re worried about is bugging you, and the more you wait to open it the more it’s going to irritate you, whatever it is you’re worried about just know that I’m here I’m not going anywhere even if it’s weird.”

I sighed as I looked at the box, my heart pounding as I contemplated opening the lid. I took several deep breaths before opening the box excitement and fear washing over me as the lid slowly separated from the bottom half.

β€œWhoa! There’s a lot in here, letters, pictures, small items that look like they used to go to something, and a bunch of strange objects with odd symbols on them.” Blaine said as he moved things around in the box.

β€œWhat is all this stuff?” I asked myself as I picked up a picture of what I thought might be mom.

β€œWho knows, I’ve never seen Mira look at any of this stuff it’s kind of like she just stuck all this stuff in a box and forgot about it.”

I looked in the box finding another smaller box laced in leather all around it, a small little heart-shaped latch keeping the top closed.

β€œI wonder what this is,” I said as I turned the box around looking for something on it that could tell me.

Blaine looked at the box, his eyes widening as he looked at it almost as if he’d seen it before.

β€œMaybe that’s what I was getting at,” he said as he observed the box. β€œMaybe it’s something that your mom was going to give you when you were older but never got a chance to give you.”

β€œY- You think? But what if you’re wrong? what if it’s just a piece of jewelry mom didn’t want to see anymore, something that maybe reminded her of grandma.

I remember her telling me that she missed her mother a lot and a lot of her things made her sad, maybe she just stuck it in there so she wouldn’t have to look at it.”

β€œHmm… We could always find out; I know that you would not want to upset your mom by going through her stuff but… She’s not exactly here to yell at us and if you want to answer all your questions you have to look at everything.”

I looked at Blaine nervously before glancing at the box. I knew that Blaine had a point but it just felt wrong to go through mom stuff even if she’s been gone so long.

β€œOkay fine, I’ll open the box,” I said as I popped the lid open, my eyes widening as I saw the pendant rest on the velvet cushion on the inside.

Holy crap! That is a very… Beautiful pendant how the heck didβ€”

β€œHey, Zaphira take a look at it much closer,” Blaine said as he pointed to the bottom of the pendant.

My eyes followed his finger as it landed on something carved onto the necklace. Down below at the bottom of the pendant rested a name and numbers.

β€œHoly! It says my name, Zaphira 05/ and the rest of its cut out.” I said shocked.

How could this necklace have my name and birth on here? Why didn’t mom tell me about this necklace?

I observed the necklace. It was gold with a rose in the middle, strange symbols circled around the rose like a strange language.

β€œWhat language is this I’ve never seen him before?” I asked as I pointed to the strange symbols engraved on the pendant.

Blaine looked at the necklace grabbing it from my hand as he looked closer, his eyes squinting as he strained to see.

β€œI’ve got no clue, it kind of looks like it would be ancient Greek, the kind of looks like the symbols the ancient Greeks used to use. Are any of your relatives Greek?”

β€œNo, not that I’ve been told, dad was French and something else, and mom never specified what she was… Actually, she went out of her way to avoid telling me.” I said as I remembered asking her multiple times out of curiosity.

Blaine said nothing he just looked at the pendant, studying the symbols as if he could decipher what it said.

β€œHey look, there’s something else in the box to a small ring,” Blaine said as he put the pendant down on the table. The light from the ceiling beaming down on it making the symbols and rows disappear as if it was just a giant coin.

I picked up the ring, a black gem sat and nuzzled in the middle and between the frame. The frame was a dark obsidian color, the size small as if it was designed for a baby with no taste.

β€œWhat a strange color, why would they make a ring so dark? Also is this obsidian it looks like obsidian.” I asked as I handed him the ring.

β€œHmm, I’m not sure but it looks like it’s made of really good quality it feels heavy, so if it ever got what it wouldn’t tarnish. The gem in the middle looks like Onyx.” Blaine said handing me back the ring.

β€œThe ring is really small; I know I don’t really have any clue what mom’s ring size was what this looks like it wouldn’t fit unless she’s got fingers for babies,” I said as I slid the ring on my pinky.

β€œMaybe it’s not a ring for your mother maybe it was an old room for you, I mean the necklace has your name on it and possibly your birthday and birth year, maybe it was a collection that she was making for you and she bought you the ring when you were tiny.”

β€œBut who would actually buy a written for a baby I mean, wouldn’t it be dangerous? They're so small and could just stick it in their mouth.” I said as I looked up the ring and the light.

β€œIt’s not like it’s unheard of, I’ve heard a lot of parents buying their babies far stupider than a ring, at least when they get older, they can still keep it as a necklace cherish it… Or whatever.” Blaine said.

β€œI guess you’ve got a point, I mean I may not have seen it before or paid attention but celebrities do a lot of stupid things like I heard that Veronica Willows gave her baby Avachi Deir clothing and blankets. Because she is going to know what the heck Avachi is.” I spoke.

β€œWait! They make baby clothes now? I thought they were a purse company kind of like… What the heck is that brand that Clarissa likes again? Halo what now.”

β€œHalo mermaid,” I said nonchalantly.

β€œRight, I still think that’s a really weird name for a designer company that makes purses you would think they would invest in swimwear or something for the ocean, not something you would carry on her shoulder,” Blaine said confused.

β€œI say That about Cherry, did you know they wanna make Banana phones?”

β€œYou gotta be kidding a banana phone? You’re telling me that Cherry the most well-known phone company is now making banana phones?” Blaine asked as he tried to suppress a laugh.

β€œTo be honest I’m not sure, I just heard of it when reading something on social media about Cherry and how they had the healthiest method for a new phone-style joking about how it would give you vitamin C.”

Blaine burst out laughing as he looked at me, his eyes tearing as he roared with laughter. I sat and watched as he held his stomach together, practically gasping for air as he tried to stop laughing.

The dude's a joke, why would he come up with something so stupid I hope it’s one of those fake hypes you see to get all the Cherry fans excited over some fake phone that supposed to come out.”

Anyway… What do you think I should do about the stuff?” I asked as I gestured to the box and random jewelry.

β€œOh, right I forgot Ha-ha,” he said chuckling as he pulled the box closer to himself. β€œSorry I got distracted.”

I glanced at my phone, my lock screen revealing a picture of mom that I found in one of the albums.

β€œDamn it’s getting late I didn’t realize how late it was,” I said showing him the time.

β€œSon of a bitch, I didn’t realize it was that late no wonder I feel worn out.” He said as he started to rise to his feet.

β€œI should probably get going, I’ve got lots of homework to do, and practice wore me out I’m sorry I can’t be more of help but you should probably keep good jewelry if it’s something your mom wanted you to have you should at least give her that.”

I glanced at the jewelry on the table my heart sinking a little as I thought of mom. If she went out of her way to get me these and save them then I can’t be mean and never wear them, wear the ring on my pinky finger or turn them into a necklace. I thought feeling a small weight lift off my shoulders.

β€œOkay, thanks for stopping by,” I said as I rose to my feet to walk him out.

β€œOf course, now… Where’s my Tupperware?” He said as he quickly made his way back to the kitchen grabbing the container off the table.

I walked Blaine to the door hugging him before he left, his fresh scent of lavender filling my nose as he embraced me.

β€œNight Zaphira.” He said then waved as he left. I waved back until he disappeared into the darkness then closed the door.

I wonder what the dream was and why I suddenly remembered those things. I thought as I sighed leaning against the now locked door.
