Chapter DNA
THIRD PERSON POV:
The group of four understood the consequences of their actions. They couldn't stay in the Frost Pack after what they had just done, and worse, they didn't know where to go. If they drove to the Dusk Pack, Halle might not condone their actions. She wanted them to be strong, but she had never mentioned disrespecting an Alpha as part of the plan. "So, what is your plan, Haze?" Finn asked as they drove aimlessly down the road.
"I'm still trying to put it together. Now that I know their agenda, I think I need to cut off every possible way they can kill Bella," she began. "I know they can kill her by killing Sue. They are linked since she's the vampire who turned Bella, so I need to undo the link bond, but I don't really know how to," she said, flipping through her spell book.
"But I'll figure something out. I just hope I figure it out before the Alpha finds us and punishes us for disobeying him," she added, and Ryder lets out a sigh.
This wasn't his first time rebelling against his father, but this time, he had his doubts. He just had to trust Hazel because she was almost never wrong. Plus, they were tired of having one foot in and one foot out.
"So, Bella is trying to release the Hybrid King?" Kai asked, and Hazel nodded.
"Radolf Clawmark. He was the one who put Enzo to death, but I really don't know how the vampires preserved his body all these years. He died for real," she said, and Kai leaned back in his seat.
"We really should have taken history classes seriously," Ryder remarked, and the twins agreed. Maybe the reason they hadn't been taking things seriously was that they had never really paid attention to history.
As they were still talking, Hazel's phone started ringing. She pulled it out of her bag to see Bella's name on display. "Bella is calling," she announced.
"Put it on speaker," Finn said, and she nodded, answering the call.
"You're on speaker, Bell, and your mates are here." Bella's heart skipped a beat when Hazel said that. They didn't believe in her, and she didn't know if speaking would anger them more.
"Don't worry; they're playing on your team. We really don't have a choice," Hazel added, and Bella took a deep breath.
She began to speak.
"The vampires use portals for their attacks. Enzo mentioned being called a walking portal. When he attacked Alpha Trent, he moved swiftly, opening a portal in the blink of an eye." Hazel tried not to panic, knowing the powers they possessed were something she could only dream of.
She had a long way to go in her practice, and the only way she would be able to beat them was if her lineage of witches bestowed her with their powers.
"I don't know, but is there a way for you to cut off their ability to make portals?" Bella asked, and Hazel remained silent for a moment.
That was possible, and she needed to find what they used to generate their energy. She could cut it off. They weren't witches, so the supernatural magic energy wasn't embedded in them, which meant they had an artificial source. But it would take a while, and she already had a lot on her plate.
"Haze?" Bella called out, and Hazel cleared her throat.
"I guess I can try, but I have a lot on my hands at the moment. Are you really sure we shouldn't involve Halle? We don't have to tell her everything, but asking me to shut off their source of energy might be too difficult for me. It will take me days of meditation and communing with the spirits to locate where they're getting their powers from." Bella sighed at Hazel's words.
"For now, I want to focus on breaking the link bond you have with Sue, and that will be difficult, too. I need something belonging to you and also something of hers. Anything at all," Hazel said.
"That might not be a problem. They're planning to launch an attack, and for now, they trust me. I can easily sneak out under the guise of spying. Just tell me where to meet you guys, and I'll be there," Bella said. Hazel glanced at the others.
"If you can get it to the Frost Pack before the end of the day, that would be great because it will take until then for my father to return. That's when they'll launch an actual search party to capture us," Ryder said.
Bella was surprised at Ryder's words.
"A search party for what?" she asked with curiosity in her voice, and Hazel took a deep breath, spilling everything that had transpired to Bella.
Her heart thudded in her chest, and she couldn't imagine her father signing a decree against her. She was hurt once more, but she tried not to cry. She was so close to getting what she wanted, and when she did, her actions would make everyone believe her.
"I'm really sorry, Bella," Hazel said, and Bella gave off a faint laugh to mask her hurt.
"It's fine. I don't need him or anyone to believe me. And besides, I'm not that innocent. I allowed Enzo to take advantage of me, and I drew the last blood from Alpha Trent, so I deserve it." She was trying to take responsibility for her actions, no matter how heavy it sounded.
"I'll get you what you want," she said, ending the call before Hazel could speak. Then she rushed out of her room without hesitation, making her way down the hall to find Sue.
She knew she couldn't keep wasting time. Soon, she found Sue sitting idly in front of the house. She closed in on her, sitting close to her on the pavement.
"Are you here to cause more trouble for me, girl?" Sue asked as she downed the glass of beer in her hand. Bella shook her head.
"No, I'm not. I was bored, so I wanted some fresh air." Sue glanced at her, her brows creased. She had a soft spot for Bella, which had grown recently, but she didn't want to show it.
"Don't you have friends to play with? Where's Mabel?" Sue asked, and Bella sighed deeply.
"She's probably asleep, but I can't sleep. The weight of the war is pressing down on me, and it's in two days," she said, and Sue glanced at her. "I heard my father signed a decree against me, and I'm not surprised one bit. He's always hated me for what I am." She tried to gain Sue's sympathy.
"I just wish my life could be better. Maybe if I were born a vampire, I wouldn't face this kind of loneliness, and my father wouldn't hate me so much. You guys accept your kind no matter what. I was a werewolf first, and you accepted me." She heaved a huge sigh, and Sue stretched forth her beer.
"Here. Drink," Sue said, and Bella took the bottle, bringing it to her lips. She took a sip, allowing the burning sensation to drown her throat.
"It's not always as easy as it seems. Enzo is my uncle, but he doesn't seem to acknowledge me, and it hurts too. He took care of me as a kid, so he's like a father. So, we have something in common," Sue said in a low voice.
Bella's heart lightened, knowing she had cracked through Sue.
"I'm truly sorry," Bella said, and Sue reached for the bottle, taking more of the liquid.
"No sweat. I'm good, and I don't want to hear this anywhere," she said, and Bella made a zipper sign with her fingers. Sue turned away, finishing the entire content of the bottle.
Then Bella threw her arms around Sue without thinking about what Sue would do, but to her surprise, Sue didn't push her away. Bella took advantage of the situation, plucking a small strand of hair from Sue. She pulled away almost immediately, and Sue got to her feet without saying a word to Bella, then walked back into the house, leaving Bella there.
Bella waited a moment before walking back into the house. She practically raced to her room to tell Hazel she had gotten what she needed. On getting there, she saw Mabel on her bed, which made it even better.
"Where have you been?" Mabel asked, and Bella shrugged.
"With Sue. She said she needed something from the Frost Pack and asked you to help me with a portal, so come on."
