Chapter FIFTY HYBRIDS
Bella:
I grabbed my phone, texting Hazel before Mabel could open the portal.
"We need to be in the town at the Frost Pack. Can you get us there?" I asked Mabel, and she nodded.
"I am good with portals, too. Lyra was an expert, but you can trust me." I placed a hand on her shoulder, rubbing it gently.
"I trust you more than anyone here," I said to her. She opened the portal, and we walked through it. In no time, we were in the Frost Pack.
My heart raced badly because I couldn't tell if I wanted to see the triplets. Hazel said they were on my side, but a part of me couldn't believe it. I wondered if Ryder had truly moved past what had happened before. He initiated the fight, but somehow the guilt still clawed at me.
"We are here, so what exactly are we looking for?" Mabel asked, and at that moment, I saw Finn's car pull up on the other side of the street. Before I could respond, Mabel's eyes shut, and she came crashing down.
I grabbed her at once before she hit the ground. Hazel stepped out of the car immediately, wearing the uniform the servants at the alpha's house wore.
"I am not even about to ask you what happened," I said to her, and she chuckled.
"Had to kick ass to get away, and I did pretty good."
I dipped my hand in my pocket, pulling out the strand of hair I had gotten from Sue while Hazel was trying to gloat. "That was pretty fast, but thank goodness. I can start the spell," she said, and I handed it to her.
I grabbed a strand of my hair, tugging it with a small scream, escaping my lips as I pulled it out. Then I handed it to her, and she gave me a brief hug. The whole time, I tried not to look at the car, knowing the guys had the windows rolled down, and I could tell they were staring at me.
"Are you sure you do not want to meet with the guys?" Hazel asked, and I shook my head.
"I think it's best if we focus on the mission now. There has been so much tension, and I want us to get things right first before we focus on that."
She shrugged, then patted my shoulder gently.
"Be good, Bella. We will do all we can from our end. Keep an eye out for hungry werewolf soldiers, because they will come after you soon."
When she mentioned this, I remembered the war.
"The vampires are coming in two days, so please make sure you remain safe for me."
She nodded at my words, then turned around at once.
"Hey, do you have anything you could hand me? So I can show it to Mabel as the reason..."
I didn't finish my sentence when she pulled out one button on the gown, handing it to me. That would definitely do
the trick once I called it something mystique. Hazel walked away. Then I tossed the button on the ground.
I finally looked at the guys and waved briefly at them before crouching down to grab Mabel. I helped her up from the ground, and as soon as my friends drove away, she woke up.
"So what are we looking for?" she repeated her question.
I put my hand in the air, squinting my eyes. Then I crouched down and picked up the button.
"Found it. Now let us get out of here before the wolf warriors find me. I am a wanted man in this land," I said, and she nodded, opening up the portal at once.
As soon as we got back, I walked out of the room, acting like I was going to hand over what I had gotten for Sue. I knew I just had to hang around for a moment before returning to the room. I rushed up the stairs.
For a couple of minutes, I spent my time pacing back and forth in another hallway to pass the time. I threw pleasant greetings and smiles at every vampire that passed by. The way they sneered at me showed they didn't like me at all, but I couldn't care less. My father didn't like me either, so a bunch of vampires despising me wasn't much of a problem for me.
After a while, I thought it was time to leave, so I made my way downstairs. Upon reaching the second floor, I heard voices echoing from a distance. Sue's voice was the first I recognized, convincing me they were probably having a boil-down about the impending war. I was going to turn around, but then I heard Ray.
"This is foolproof, and it will take a lot for them to release the hybrid king. I say we strike tomorrow!" My stomach tightened in fear.
"You are right. I mean, where will they find fifty hybrids? It is very much impossible, and we would have captured them before they can do that. We have the hybrid girl with us. It will be easier for us to get the four hundred werewolves we need to resurrect our brothers," Sue's voice came next.
Fifty hybrids? That was all it would take to release Radolf Clawmark. It was a lot, but when there is a will, there is a way, I said to myself as I raced downstairs.
A smile hung on my face, and for the first time, I felt sane. My hard work had paid off. I practically bounced down the stairs and through the hallway like I wasn't going to be plunged into the battlefield tomorrow against my people. On getting to my room, I saw Mabel still on my bed.
"Someone seems happy. Did Sue get you a gift or something?" she asked, and I shook my head.
"Even better. I think the war will start tomorrow," I grinned, and she raised a brow.
"I cannot wait to get my revenge on the pack," I said to her, and she shook her head.
"What happened, Bella? You sound just like Lyra."
I shrugged.
"Maybe I am genuinely tired of begging people to love me. Here I can be my authentic self without feeling like an outcast," I said, and she nodded. Then she got to her feet.
"Well, I am going to go. I think I have some things to get to in my room."
I gave her a short wave with a smile on my lips, then shut my door behind her, giving off a breath of relief.
It was so easy fooling her, but I think I just traumatized her a bit. I couldn't care less at the moment. I jumped on my bed at once, taking out my phone to text Hazel.
"Where are you guys?" I asked.
I waited about two minutes before she read the message.
"At an ancient cave, I discovered in what appears to be a wasteland. That is where I found out about the plan of the vampires to kill you in the end. We couldn't stay at the Frost Pack because the alpha will not let us go free once he returns."
"Well, great news," I texted back.
"What?????" her reply came immediately, and I began to type as my heart leapt for joy.
"We need fifty hybrids to release Radolf Clawmark."
"That's a lot, Bella. How are we going to do that? It is almost impossible. Where do we find fifty hybrids?"
"You panic a lot. I am a hybrid, and I can convert a couple of people. The war is speculated to begin tomorrow, and we need to capture a couple of werewolves."
"How many?"
I knew she was going to scream, but I couldn't hold back the number, so I replied to her.
"Four hundred."
She sent a gasp emoji, and I replied with an "I know."
"Enzo trusts me now, and I will probably be among those to lead the operation. When I capture two wolves, I send him one, and I keep one. That is my game plan, and I hope it works."
She replied with a crossed-finger emoji.
"How is the spell coming?"
"The last time, the cave threw me out, so I am trying not to anger it by not touching anything. So far, it has been very friendly to me, so I will keep staying in my lane and not attempt to unlock anything that belongs to it."
"I am rooting for you. Thank you for believing in me. I have a feeling we have won this war."
"Me too. I just hope things do not escalate."
When she said this, I placed my phone on my chest, inhaling deeply. That was my prayer, but I had a feeling we were about to lose more people, especially loved ones.
