chapter 21
Pulling up to the house, Alex led me inside and up to my room. “Get cleaned up, dinner is in a while.” He said closing my door behind him. Pulling off my jacket, I looked back at him. “What are you staring at?” “You. I am so sorry, I never should have allowed you to do that, back at the bar.” “Stop. It was my choice, not yours, and there was no talking me out of it. I never should have done it, but I wanted to show them that I was okay.”
Sighing I sat on the edge of my bed.
“Other than Zack the wolves, and one family of vampires, are the only family I have left; and don’t give me that look, you’re there as well, and so is Raphe, but I’m still getting used to all this.”
I said motioning to the room around us.
Moving next to me Alex took my hand. “I know. Believe me I know. When this first happened to me, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. That was over three hundred years ago, and now look at me, I’m running the place. You’ll get the hang of it, I know you will.”
Taking the chance I leaned in and kissed him, sealing our mouths together.
Pulling me closer winding his fingers through my hair. Pushing past my lips, rubbing his tongue along mine. Moving from my lips he started kissing my jaw, down to my neck. I want it to go further, but it can’t; not right now at least, not with so much going on around us. Forcing himself to break off the kiss, leaning his forehead against mine, trying to control himself.
“We need to get cleaned up. I will just be in my room if you need anything.”
Before I can say anything, he’s threw our door, closing it behind him. Taking a deep breathe, going into the bathroom I splashed cold water on my face, trying to figure out what just happened out there.
After the day I have had, right now all I need is a stiff drink. I quickly got cleaned up; I changed left Alex a note and went down to the library where I know there is drink cart, and I can get exactly what I need.
Stepping into the room, the whole house is quiet; pouring myself a drink, I settled down by the large window, watching the sun go down.
“Well hello there.” Looking over Nicolas is standing in the doorway to the library, his arms relaxed, leather jacket hanging open revealing his tight black T-shirt. “What are you doing here?” I asked setting my glass down, the ice clanging against the sides of the glass. He gave me a warm smile. Stepping further into the room with me. “Well I was looking for Alexander, but I found you instead.” “I thought you weren’t supposed to leave Zack?” “I was needed here, as I said before. Our most trusted men are taking good care of him.”
Pulling out his phone, he tapped the screen a few times. “Hey it’s me. Yeah I’m with her, put him on.”
Extending the phone to me he said.
“Your little human is on the line. You have five minutes. With him.” Taking the phone Nick moved to the bar making himself and I a drink. There was a few seconds when the line was dead, but then I heard his voice, the same as it always has been. “Thank god Zack! How are you? Are you okay?”
“Yeah Z I’m fine. It’s good to hear your voice.” “Yours too. How are they treating you?”
“Good. Sometimes they look at me like I’m something to eat, but we’re hanging in there.” “Good. I have missed you so much.” “Me too. When do you think I could come back?”
“I don’t know Zack. Things are getting really crazy here, and I think it’s safer for you to stay away until things settle down. I know neither one of us likes it, but it’s the way it has to be for now.”
“I understand Z. Even though I don’t like it. Listen there saying our time is almost up. But I’ll be fine here.” “Good. I really miss you.” “Zaphira? I have to tell you this, since I don’t know when I’ll get the chance. I love you. I always have.” Shocked I can’t say anything. Suddenly everything is so numb, I felt the phone slide from between my fingers, the last thing I heard was someone yelling, around me and then everything went black. My mind frozen from what he said to me.
