Chapter 49
Donovon’s POV
For the past few weeks, I and my wolf are on edge, especially, since Ivory is getting closer to give birth. Dad says it is normal and every wolf behaves like this when his mate is nearing the childbirth as they are vulnerable during this phase.
However, with the increase of attacks on our pack borders, I can’t help but feel worried about Ivory's safety, as not only hers but my pup’s life is also in danger.
Being an Alpha my first priority is protecting my pack, however, being a mate there is nothing which is more important for me than Ivory.
It is not easy to create a balance between both of my responsibilities, as sometimes fulfilling one duty means to overlook the other. But I am blessed with a mate, who is understanding and knows being an Alpha’s mate is not easy. As both Alpha and Luna have to make sacrifices for their pack.
Rubbing my eyes, I let out a tired sigh. This time should be filled with happiness, but here we are living with a threat and we don’t even know who our enemy is.
I haven’t told Ivory about these attacks because she is already feeling quite anxious and I don’t want to add more to her worry.
Stepping out of the office, I head outside towards the back garden to check on Ivory. She mostly spends her time outside, near nature, instead of resting in her bedroom. She says when she is amidst of nature, she feels relaxed and calm.
She can’t shift into her wolf, which is also making her agitated because after our first shift we need to let out our wolf from time to time as it demands to be freed. Even though Fire and Ivory understand this, but whenever she feels anxious or worried Fire’s first instinct is to take over and protect her human. Especially, if Ivory’s worry is related to our pup, then it becomes difficult to keep her wolf in control as Fire wants to protect the pup.
Twice, we have to give Ivory a small dose of sedative to keep her calm. Because the fear of somebody snatching her baby from her was settled in her heart making her fiercely protective of the pup.
She was not letting anyone come near her, even me, only Storm had managed to calm her down enough to allow the doctor to inject the sedative. Otherwise, she was dangerously growling and was ready to take down anyone who even dared to take a step in her direction.
Walking outside, I find her sitting in her usual spot near the flower bed looking completely at peace.
She is leaning on the heels of her palm, with her closed eyes as she is basking the sun.
A soft smile dances on her lips, as she senses me approaching her.
Sitting behind her, I wrap my arms around her which makes her lean against my chest. I nuzzle her neck then rub my cheek against her, rubbing off my scent on her while my hand caresses her belly feeling the pup under my palm.
As if recognizing my touch, pup kicks against my hand which makes Ivory laugh.
“Looks like someone just woke up.” She smiles fondly while resting her hand on mine, “For the past two hours, she was so calm and barely moving. And now when daddy is here she decides to play soccer inside me.”
I can’t help but laugh, when I feel two more kicks against my hand.
“How are you feeling?” I ask her.
“Now I am feeling better.” She sighs and leans more into my chest. “I was just missing you.”
“I am sorry.” I kiss her head, as my heart sinks knowing I am not spending enough time with her, with everything going around I hardly get any time.
“It’s okay, you are busy.” Tilting her head to the side she smiles at me. “Pack work is important. You can’t just overlook your duties and be a lazy ass mate, who just sits and eats.” She raises her eyebrows and giggles softly.
I love to hear her carefree laugh.
I was about to reply to her, but Mathew’s voice echoes in our head stalling my words.
"We are under attack!"
Ivory’s POV
Warriors at the border are keeping the enemies engaged so that everyone at the pack members can get to safety. Children and aged members of the pack are already sent to the underground bunkers along with some women to look after the children. The rest of the women are helping around the pack.
Everyone already knows what they have to do in such situations. There is no state of chaos, everything is going in a systemic manner.
Donovon and Wyatt are doing the last minute arrangements and securing the pack, then they will too head towards the border where Cole is already leading our warriors in the fight.
“Our allies have been informed about the attack, they are sending the backup.” Donovon’s voice snaps me out of my thoughts.
“Don’t worry, Ivory, everything will be fine.” He places a hand on my shoulder trying to comfort me, but he can’t conceal his worry from me.
His eyes speak what he is trying to hide from me. I can sense he is worried as his pack is in danger.
No matter how strong a pack is, but whenever there is an attack it suffers.
“Donovon, maybe I can help.” I look at him, “If they just want my blood, can we give them-”
“Ivory, don’t be ridiculous.” He glares at me, “This is not the first time we have been attacked, nor it will be the last time. We are strong enough to defend our pack and you, so don’t even dare think something like this.”
I have heard Donovon talking to James that these wolves who attacked our pack are asking for me. The guilt of knowing they are in this situation because of me is eating me alive.
My pack is in danger because of me.
What kind of blessing is this Moon Goddess, where I am more of a curse to my own people?
“I don’t want something to happen to you, or the pack members especially because of me.” I sigh and glance down as tears gather in my eyes.
There is this unknown fear in my heart, like something bad is going to happen, even more than it already is.
“I am scared, Donovon.” I whisper, “I don’t want to lose you.” Lifting my eyes, I look at him while my heart clenches painfully knowing that my mate’s life might be in danger, along with my pack members, and I am the reason behind it.
"Don't be afraid, just trust me." He locks his gaze with mine, "Soon this will be over and we all will be fine." He holds my hand reassuringly and places a small kiss on my knuckles.
For the first time his words don't comfort me. The anxiousness in my heart doesn't settle down with his touch.
I want to say so much to him but the time is short so instead, I wrap my arms around him and let our bond do the talking as I send my love through our bond.
"I love you, Donovon." Lifting my head from his chest, I glance at him while cupping his face in my hand, "Please, return to me."
"I will always come back to you." Leaning down he rests his forehead against mine, while his eyes held my gaze.
We both are wrapped in each other's arms taking in each other scent, silently engraving each other in our mind and heart. We know both the severity of the situation as this might be the last time where we might be together.
The moment he will step outside my embrace, from there everything could change because we both will be at the mercy of our fate.
His lips come crashing down on mine swallowing my whimper which escapes from my lips while tears which I am trying to hold back stream downs from my eyes.
He kisses me fiercely and passionately, encasing me in the warmth of love, like this is our last kiss. I return back the kiss with the same intensity, pouring my heart out in this kiss, expressing my love with each glide of my lips against his.
Breaking the kiss, his thumbs swipes my tears as he presses a kiss on my forehead.
"I love you, Ivory, no matter what happens always remember this." He whispers against my skin.
Then stepping away, he gets on his knees in front of me and caresses my bump with both hands.
Tears roll down from my eyes, as I watch him silently whispering affectionate words to our baby girl then he places a few kisses on my bump.
Standing to his full height, he takes a few more steps away from me and I know the time is getting near because I can hear Wyatt ordering warriors in the front to start shifting into their wolves.
Donovon keeps his eyes locked with mine, as he shifts into his wolf, and Wolfie stands in front of me in his place.
Rushing to him, I throw my arms around his neck and start crying in his fur. I tried to be strong in front of my mate, but I can't hide my emotions in front of my best friend.
He places his big paw on my back, and let me hold him.
Not only my mate, but if something goes wrong, I will also even lose my best friend.
When I release him, he licks my tears and whines when the tears don't stop flowing from my eyes.
"I love you, Wolfie." I run my hand through his fur while inhaling a deep breath, "Take care of yourself and Donovon, for me." I wipe my tears with the back of my hand.
"Wolfie loves Cherry, too." His rough voice echoes in my mind bringing a small smile on my lips. "Wolfie loves the pup too."
He rubs his muzzle against my bump and then after licking it for a few times like he is trying to rub off his scent on his pup he sits on his hind legs facing me.
Tilting his head slightly to the side, he glances into my eyes.
I know he can feel the distress of my wolf, as me and my wolf we both are feeling helpless. Just for the sake of our pup, Fire is trying to stay calm and blocking our bond as much as she can to stop overtaking me.
I hear a howl which indicates everyone is ready to leave.
Wolfie stands and shakes his fur while his posture turns confident as his eyes filled with determination, ready to lead his pack to the victory.
Nodding his head, as a silent goodbye, he walks outside to join his wolves.
A threatening and powerful growl erupts from his chest, which promises nothing but the death of the enemies who dared to look in the direction of his pack.
Jenna's wolf stands protectively beside me while I know even Gavin and Luca are around me as we watch Storm and our warriors disappearing into the woods heading towards the fight.
