Chapter 144
At 8:30 am the next day, Calla arrived at the courthouse right on time.
The weather was especially gloomy, matching her mood. She wore a black coat and had put on light makeup to look better, but it couldn’t hide her slightly swollen eyes.
When Calla arrived, Mercer was not there yet. She glanced at her watch. He was five minutes late, which was unusual since he was always punctual. She wondered why he was late today.
A moment later, a black figure suddenly walked into the lobby, followed by Simon as per usual.
Mercer looked stern, his black cashmere coat sharply tailored. There was a bit of stubble on his jaw, which only added to his rugged charm. He was still a man who women couldn’t take their eyes off.
Calla’s eyes met his for a second before she lowered her gaze. Her heart was in turmoil but she was unwilling to let him see any sign of it.
Mercer gave Simon a look, prompting him to greet Calla. “Mrs. Garland, have you spoken to a clerk?”
Calla was bewildered. She had never filed for divorce before and didn’t know she had to speak to a clerk. As such, she shook her head.
“I’ll do it,” Simon said, heading to join the queue.
Mercer stepped forward and said in a low voice, “If you have any demands, you can bring them up now.”
Hearing this, Calla looked up at him. She immediately realized he thought she would ask for money.
A sharp pang of pain shot through her heart. Did he think so little of her? He had assumed she would take advantage of the divorce to extort money from him.
“Mercer, listen to me. I have no demands. I only want you to leave me alone from now on,” Calla said, lifting her chin.
Only she knew how little she meant those words, but she couldn’t show weakness in front of him. She
couldn’t afford to let him look down on her!
Mercer said such things because he hoped Calla would propose an unacceptable demand. Then, he
could delay the divorce.
However, she didn’t seem to have any feelings for him anymore. She just wanted to end their relationship completely and move on with her life.
Anger surged through his chest, and Mercer said coldly, “Do you think you’re such a great woman? Do you expect me to come crawling back to you?”
Calla’s fiery temper flared up at this. But before she could retort, Simon approached having spoken to a clerk.
“Mr. Garland, Mrs. Garland, there are a lot of people filing for divorce today. You’re number 28 in line so it won’t be possible to complete the process this morning,” Simon informed Mercer and Calla.

Calla glanced at the slip in Simon’s hand that had the number 28 scribbled on it, confirming their number in the queue. She felt a wave of frustration. How unbelievable it was that even divorcing required waiting in line.
Seeing that neither Mercer nor Calla spoke, Simon suggested, “Why not come back tomorrow?”
“Don’t they work in the afternoon as well?” Mercer suddenly asked.
Hearing this, Calla didn’t back down either. “The courthouse reopens after lunch at 1:30 pm. We can come early to get a number.”
“Alright then,” Mercer agreed immediately.
At this point, Simon was sweating. He had hoped the crowd today would deter them from divorcing. But these two were determined, neither willing to yield.
As Calla was about to leave, a young couple holding hands walked over.
