Chapter 143
So, Mercer had seen Calla and Harlan. For a moment, Calla opened and closed her mouth, unsure of how to explain herself. She wondered if there was even a need to explain anymore.
But her silence looked like guilt and helplessness to Mercer. He questioned her, “Are you planning to be with him after our divorce?”
“Don’t you want to divorce me? You went to Sophie before we even split. Didn’t you send me to that godforsaken place, Butterfly Hill, because I was in your way? If you want a divorce, just say it.
“Do you have to push all the blame onto others and pretend to be the victim? When did you become so hypocritical? If you want to be with Sophie, fine–I’ll let you. We didn’t get together out of love anyway,” Calla shouted, voicing the grievances she had kept hidden for so long.
Mercer stared at Calla coldly. There was a hint of shock in his eyes. He probably never imagined that this was how Calla viewed him.
After a moment, he nodded. “Fine, if you want a divorce so much, there’s no point in staying together.” “You’re the one who wants a divorce!” Calla roared.
“It doesn’t matter who wants it. The result is the same. See you at the courthouse at 8.30 am tomorrow!” Mercer spat these words before turning to leave.
After he left, Calla felt the world spin. She stumbled and collapsed onto the couch with tears already streaming down her face.
Jasmine hurried over and tried to advise her. “Mrs. Garland, Mr. Garland had given in to you. Why are you still so stubborn? Go after him. He hasn’t gone far yet!”
Calla couldn’t help but laugh bitterly. Her voice choked with tears. “Is this him giving in to me? He was insulting me.”
What did he mean by not seeing Harlan again? Did he already think she had been unfaithful? And he even said to pretend nothing happened and continue living together.
What about Sophie? Did he want to have it all? He wanted to have a wife at home and a lover outside. What did he take her for? A woman with no dignity or shame?
Jasmine shook her head and sighed.
At that moment, Mercer hadn’t left yet. He was standing by the entrance, having heard everything Calla and Jasmine said.
Earlier, he had been furious but held back his emotions. He knew she was still weak from childbirth and couldn’t handle the stress.
Yet, her constant misunderstandings left him no choice but to leave quickly. In the heat of the moment, he had blurted out to meet at the courthouse at 8:30 am tomorrow.
He regretted it as soon as he reached the entrance–but there was no turning back. His pride and self- esteem wouldn’t allow it.

So, he had hoped she’d regret it and come after him. But she had made up her mind. Understanding this, he forced a bitter smile and stepped out the door.
Calla didn’t eat all day. Though she didn’t cry until dawn, she wept for a long time. Deep down, she regretted it, too. If she had agreed to cut ties with Harlan, would he not demand to divorce her? Could they have continued their lives together?
Still, it was only a hypothesis. Her pride would never let her agree to such a ridiculous condition.
She wouldn’t tolerate sharing her husband with another woman. No matter how much she loved him, that was where she drew the line.
