Chapter Chapter Nineteen
JP
“You have got to be kidding me,” Mar said watching the television screen.
“What is it baby,” I asked trying to figure it out.
“That’s my ex boss,” she said pointing to one of the humans on the screen. He was a well built man that wore his years well. He was standing behind a tall man who was at a podium. There were probably five or six men in the group and I turned the television up so we could hear what they were saying.
“The president has let us down. He is letting these creatures live and work with us and they are dangerous. We need some form of control over these monsters and yet he does nothing. He has in fact members of different species on his own councils. It’s time we took this country back for us, the humans, join with me and vote him out. We can take our country back and kick out the creatures once and for all.”
There was applause from wherever he was speaking and I felt a sinking in my stomach. These little hate groups were coming together. This was not going to be a problem that was going away. I was extremely nervous when I realized that Mar knew one of these men and she had an assassination attempt against her life. Was this why?
I looked at Mar and she looked scared. I rubbed her back as we watched as the men all signed some document and waved at the applause of those watching as they did so. This was so not good. We were going to need to be extra careful in the coming days. I needed to talk to Charlie and see what this was all about.
“Excuse me baby,” I said standing up. “I’m going to call Charlie and see what he knows.”
Harper slipped in to sit with Mar and I didn’t mind. They were really good friends at this point and Harper would need that too in the days ahead I was afraid.
“What’s up little brother? I’m kind of busy.” Charlie said answering the phone.
“I just watched the television and Mar’s ex boss was part of a group of extremists trying to get rid of the president. I think that is why we had the hate groups here, I think it was him.” I said not mentioning the assassination attempt.
“Not just here,” he said quietly. “We have been having trouble all over the country. Yesterday a bunch of vampires were taken from the underground of San Francisco, St. Louis and Nashville. A witch coven in Massachusetts was wiped out to the last and a Were pack in Colorado was all hunted and killed. People are going nuts and the president is losing control. He’s ordered out the armed forces but who knows how many are loyal to him and not closeted bigots. It’s not good JP.”
“Shit, this whole thing is shit. Are you staying or do you got to get back?” I asked.
“We are on temporary leave under the presidents orders. He believes he needs to distance himself from Supernatural’s in order to keep the vote and the peace. I think that’s going to backfire and then we are going to be in a mess. I don’t know what your parents are doing, but I’m staying, and preparing for the worst.”
“Damn it Charlie,” I said upset. “I don’t need to worry about them when all this shit is going down. Tell me you got through to them and they are going to leave Mar and me alone.”
“I wish I could little brother but they are being obstinate. They are calling in witches from all over with the excuse to have a fortified front if one of the hate groups comes. The people they are bringing in JP, I think they are going to try and go after Mar. I’m watching them and keeping it quiet, but I have your back. Do what you both need to do and I’ll keep an eye on these two.”
“Ok,” I said feeling a little better about Charlie watching them but not about them calling in more witches. I needed to speak to Mar’s dad and tell him what was going on. We told him about the dinner and what Mar was able to do and he was so shocked he choked. This was new territory and none of us knew what it meant.
“JP, be careful. I’ll keep your parents distracted but sooner or later it will come to a head.” He said and I nodded into the phone.
“You too big brother. They have never liked how close we are. Don’t get caught doing anything you shouldn’t.” I said back.
“I’m too good for that,” he said back to me and I smirked. That was Charlie to a T. “Talk to you later,” he said hanging up.
I went back inside and Mar was joined by her parents and some of the other doctors who were all watching a replay of what we saw. I walked up to Mar’s dad and said “sir, could I have a moment?”
“Of course,” he said getting up and following me to another room of the inn that was a little quieter. “What’s on your mind besides the obvious JP?”
“My parents are calling in more witches here to Fae-ville. I would love to say it was for the town’s defense but I think it is for their own needs. After last night I don’t think it will be good for any of us to not suspect them of something.”
“Do you know who they are bringing in?” He asked, and shit, I didn’t ask.
“No sir. I didn’t think to ask and I should have.”
“It’s alright; I can assume I know who they are bringing in. If I have a few friends come to town, can you arrange dwellings for them?” He asked and my hopes sparked.
“Yes, we have a few move in ready houses that the local real estate agent has and I will talk to her as soon as we are done. How many do you need?”
“Let me know how many you can get and I will get them filled till this is all over. I have a few friends of my own that owe me a favor or two, and no offense, they don’t like your parents much.” Tom said smiling.
“That’s ok, right now I don’t like them either. I’ll get busy.” I said reaching for my phone but he stopped me.
“JP, I am glad you and Mar found each other. I think you two are right together. Don’t give up.”
“Sir, if it wasn’t so early I would ask you now, but I will never give up. Mar and I will see this through and then we are going to be together forever.” I said meaning every word.
He smiled at me and said “when the time comes, you have it.”
“Thank you sir, now I’ll get busy, I have a town and a girlfriend to protect.”
Mar
Dad and JP came back in the room and I would find out what they talked about as soon as I got JP alone. In the meantime everyone’s phones were going crazy. Witches were nervous and so were the other Super’s, this was a terrible thing to see on television, when entire species were being called out. We needed to do something.
I stood up and went to JP seeing how my phone was the only one not being called. “Hey baby,” I said slipping into his arms.
“We need to talk and then we have a lot of work to do. Are you up for it?” He asked looking me over carefully.
“Try and stop me,” I said smiling. “What do we need to do?”
He told me about his conversation with Charlie and then what he and dad talked about. I was beginning to really dislike his parents. Dad was right though, he knew people. He was the doctor to the stars so to speak.
“I need to get a hold of all the houses in town that we can and if you wouldn’t mind, then we need to make sure they all have what people need while they are here. You and Harvey and I can work on that, but others might be willing to help as well.”
“Dad has pull, and mom too, we better get moving. You arrange the houses and I will get with Harv and we will get shit figured out.” I said smiling.
“In case I haven’t told you today miss Oliver, I love you,” he said wrapping me in a giant hug and kissing me soundly on the lips. It wasn’t a passionate kiss, it was more of a worried about you kiss so I let it go, but I would get my passionate one later guaranteed.
We took off together and headed for the warehouse. As soon as we got there we split up and me and Harv got busy arranging for household needs while JP was hot on the phone with some person about houses.
I was going to go see how many he had set up so far when my own phone rang. I looked down and it was Carolyn. Shit I didn’t need this right now. We weren’t close. We definitely weren’t friends, and after the way things were growing up we probably never would be.
Against my better judgment I answered the phone “Hey Carolyn, I’m a little busy, so what’s up?”
“Mar, what is going on? The world is crashing and you seem to be in the middle of it. I talked to mom and she said that things were going to get worse. What happened and what can I do?” She said rambling that all out so fast that I had to concentrate to keep up.
“Hate groups are calling out for all of us Super’s to be kicked out or worse. Dad and mom came after the last attack and helped with medical needs. Dad is calling in favors to get more of his friends close to him. To put it bluntly, the shit is hitting the fan, and my old boss is one of the ones behind it. I’m not sure what you can do Carolyn, but whatever mom says works for me.”
She was my older sister and after seeing how close Charlie and JP were I knew I resented not having that with her all these years. It just sucked. “Mar, are you ok?”
“I think so.” I said not thinking to edit my feelings, and I should have. “Yeah I am fine. My boyfriend and me are doing all we can to help the town and prepare for worse.”
“Good, I’m glad you brought it up. JP Worth, how did you manage that? He is gorgeous.”
I giggled. What the hell was going on? No I wouldn’t do this, not with her. “It just happened,” I said closing it down.
“I’m coming in to help Mar, and even if you don’t want me there, I will be. You’re my sister and I love you. I have to drive because all air traffic is canceled. I’ll be there in a couple of days unless I run into problems. Then we can talk.” Carolyn said.
“Well I am sure Mom and Dad would be happy to know you are here with all of us. Carolyn, let’s be honest, we were never close growing up, we don’t have that kind of relationship.” I decided being honest was the best policy and I was proud of myself for being decent about it.
“Well, that was your fault wasn’t it,” she said back and I choked.
“My fault? What the fuck are you talking about? You and your friends tormented me and treated me like garbage. You practiced spells on me when you came home from school, a school I wasn’t allowed to attend. You were a bunch of fucking nightmares to me.”
“Good, there’s the Mar I am used to. Yeah I sucked. If I could go back and change it I would. I was too worried about fitting in and I did some terrible shit to you. Mar, I still love you and I am sorry. If I need to spend the rest of my life making up for it I will. Just give me a chance sis.”
“I gave you so many,” I said as tears ran down my face.
“I know, and I blew them. I’ve grown up Mar, please give me one more chance. I promise I will be better.” She begged me. I didn’t want to, I really didn’t, but mom would be happy.
“Damn it, fine, but this is the last chance.” I swore into the phone.
“You won’t regret this sis. I’ll be the best sister ever.” She said but I still remembered the shit she used to do to me with her friends.
“We’ll see, but just a heads up, you will never be my maid of honor.” I said out of spite. Harper would get that job.
“Wow are you too that serious already?”
“No, but we will be. We couldn’t be with anyone else at this point; we’d kill the other if they tried.” I said laughing knowing it might be true.
“I can’t wait, the man that is finally going to settle you down and make you respectable.” Carolyn said and I coughed.
“What makes you think I’m not making him wild and irresponsible?” I threw back.
“Because Dad and Mom wouldn’t still be there if they thought you were a lost cause. Mar I haven’t been the best sister but I know you, you care about people, and we all know that. You wouldn’t leave that town now for anything. You are special Mar.” Carolyn said and I was about to cry. I didn’t need this emotional stuff right now I had too much to do.
“Don’t worry, JP’s parents don’t think I’m special, they think I am a lesser being.” I said and I didn’t hear anything on the other end. “Um, Carolyn, did I lose you?”
“Nope, just looking them up. I want a picture of the first two people I want to meet when I come to town. We’ll see how they like meeting the buster of the council.” She said seriously.
“Sis, they are the council,” I said trying to calm her down. “They are the originators of the council, no one messes with them.” Well I did, but that was a story for another time.
“Not everyone can be the enforcer Mar, it changes you. It’s time they see what it has done to me. See you soon Mar, and you will see, I’ll never take you for granted again.” Carolyn finished and she hung up. She still sounded mad about JP’s parents. I hoped she didn’t do something stupid to get back in my good graces.
“Who was that and why are you crying?” JP said rushing to pull me into his arms.
“My sister, she is coming to help. She says she wants to start over more or less. I don’t know why I’m crying. I’m a basket case, you shouldn’t want me.” I said blubbering.
“Oh baby I want you, and if we can get rid of Harv for an hour I’ll show you how much.” He said smirking.
“Sure but then I will have to find something to do the other fifty minutes,” I said giggling and he began tickling me. Damn I loved this man.
