Wish Upon A Demon

CHAPTER - TWO

Usually, the not very conventionally attractive girls were always nerds.

At least, that was how much I could tell from my experience.

But it was different in my case.

I wasn’t a nerd. Though I worked hard, I never seemed to get the perfect score. Previously, I would presume that since I wasn’t very appealing to anybody, I should be good at something. So I studied harder since no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t find any other talents of mine. But even though I studied harder, I never seemed to reach the top. My ranking never changed. I was still the girl who had no talent, wasn’t academically good, wasn’t gorgeous as other girls, and a freak.

Those were some of the things that I was called at in my school. But things were changing, ever since that wish. I had become the subject to more favorable comments and I couldn’t lie and say that I didn’t feel happier about that. I tuned out the words of Mr. Howard, my English teacher, and concentrated my thoughts elsewhere, like the view of the small snowflakes, falling from the sky. Even though I loved summer more than winter, the view was comparatively more beautiful in winter.

Absentmindedly, I began doodling in my book as well.

My eyes squinted as I caught something coming – flying towards the window. I squinted my eyes further, hoping to recognize what it was. The little thing, increased slowly and slowly in size as it got closer to the window, and then, in a split second, it splattered against the window.

It resembled my father’s special omelets. Except, it was black.

My mouth hung agape, as I stared at the thing that was stuck in the window. And then the next minute, it peeled itself off the window and morphed into the shape of a man, looking exactly like the man that I had seen a few nights back. And all this time, my eyes were wide open, my mouth was open, and I wasn’t thinking, at all.

“Hello, Faye.” Said the thing. I wasn’t sure how I could hear it through the glass barrier, but somehow, its voice was loud and clear in my ears. I scooted back, making a little sound. “Do you have a problem, Ms. Martin?” Howard asked, adjusting his glasses on his nose. He scratched his bald-head that resembled one of the frying pans in my kitchen and looked at me with his hawk eyes. “N-Nothing, sir,” I said, eyes darting from Hawk Howard to the thing and vice versa. It/He waved and I scooted further back, making sure I wasn’t noticed. It was easier since I was in the last seat.

And then I turned in front, ignoring it.

“Are you pretending to ignore me?” It pressed itself against the window. I scooted a bit further away and still pretended to ignore it. “Do you want me to come inside?” My heart rate spiked up at his words, and I was going to scoot further when I fell off the chair.“Ms. Martin,” Hawk Howard emphasized. “Do you want me to send you to detention?” He asked. “No, sir. I’m sorry.” I said, and sat back on my seat, ignoring the laughs from my classmates and the irritating chuckles from that thing out the window.

“Shut up,” I whispered. “Get lost,” I said, once more. No matter the evidence, I wasn’t ready to accept that this creature was real. It was only a hallucination. Things like that don’t happen in real life. “Now, listen to me, hammy, you should stop referring to me as creature, thing, it because it’s starting to get me angry. And when demons get angry, it’s not a very good thing.” He said.

“What the hell is a hammy?” I pondered. “Short for a hamster. I didn’t find any other nicknames, and since you did look like a hamster before, small and chubby, it’s an appropriate nickname for you.” He said, and as he did, another thing clicked in my head. “Did you just say you were a demon?” I asked. I felt like falling off a cliff. I was talking to a demon. Wait, demon? Since when did demons exist? And since when they start flying to people’s schools, calling them nicknames, and chatting with them?

And the wish. Oh my god.

Realization swept over me like a tsunami.

“Oh my god.” I gasped out loud. Hawk Howard turned towards me, marker in hand, and five seconds later, I was out in the hallway, holding my bag and cursing him. However, as I looked at the empty hallway, I started to get afraid. I was alone here. That thing could just sweep through the entrance, and kidnap me. Although, now, I began to question its real intentions. If it was here to kidnap me, then it could have done that when we were in the balcony. But it didn’t. That meant that what it wanted wasn’t to kidnap me but something else.

Tiptoeing, I slowly walked down the hallway. Damn this school, such long hallways. I didn’t care if I was going to miss three classes, what I cared about was my life and currently, this demon was behind it.

“Boo.”

I jumped up, dropping my bag, screaming. Turning around, I showed anger and fear towards the masked man. I kept glaring at it while picking up my bag and then was ready to run away, when he put a hand against the wall, blocking my way. I walked backward, “S-S-Stay away from me.” I held out my hands, stumbling on the way. “N-N-No.” He mocked, stepping closer and closer. “Please.” My mouth quivers. ”Oh, how I love it when you beg. Does wonders.” I wish I could slap him. I wish I could. My back collided with the lockers, and I felt immense fear spread through me. I was trapped.

“Look at you, all helpless. Makes me want to immediately kill you.” He said, voice dropping an octave. Bipolar disorder, that was definitely it. I was trapped in the empty hallway with a mental patient who could go from taking steps towards me to chasing me and finally make the decision to throw me off the roof of the school. Moreover, it was not just a bipolar person, it was a bipolar demon. “W-What?” I asked. “I helped you transform from that woman who was nowhere to this perfect woman, and you repaid me by spoiling my very, very, very expensive gloves, and also, degrading my status by referring to me as it, creature, thing, despite my warning not to. You didn’t expect me to let that slide by, did you?” He seethed.

His threats terrified me. I was sure he could wipe me off the face of the earth, and it would go by unnoticed.

My bottom lip began quivering. I felt tears building up. My hands began shaking by my side. And my toes kept curling and uncurling. This was it. I was going to die. I was going to leave this earth, because of this creature/ person. I waited. I literally waited for a blow, or something but then opened my eyes to see him sniggering quietly. I swallowed. Was this a thing, laughing before slashing someone’s throat open? I didn’t know how demons minds work, and I was terrified.

“Did you believe that?” He asked. What did he expect as an answer? His face came closer to mine, and I pressed my head onto the lockers, till it began hurting. He laughed a bit before turning his voice deathly low, “Don’t dwell on that.” He said. “Mm, I did a good job on you.” He tapped my nose. “Remember, disobey me, and all this will be taken back. So unless you want to transform into your old self, don’t ever forget your place again.” He continued.

“Because you are mine. My creation. Someone I made. Just another addition to my list of creations.” He said. So, I wasn’t the only one. “What’s your point?” I took the courage of asking. “My point is, you didn’t expect me to do this without a price did you?” He asked. Yes. “What do you want?” I asked, slowly. “You’ll find out soon.” He whispered, masked face coming closer and closer, so when I closed my eyes. When there was no sound, I opened my eyes. No one. The hallway was empty like it was before, and then suddenly, the bell rung, shocking me. Students began getting out of their current class to go to the next one. I looked at the remaining smoke before it vanished into the air, emitting any evidence of him being here. Then, I peered down at my dress. It was split in the end.

Like the glove, this was another evidence to show that I wasn’t hallucinating and I had actually, spoken to a demon. But, who would believe me? They would consider me mad, and it wasn’t a secret that I had problems since I was little. I lay my back against the lockers. Students began disappearing into their classes and soon, the hallway was empty again. I picked my bag from the ground, which I’d dropped and walked to the entrance.

The guard was always sleeping, so anyone could leave at any time. Even though I had never left school before, I wasn’t in the mood for sitting in another class. Not after what happened a few minutes ago. One thing was clear, I hadn’t wished on a star that night, I had wished on a demon. This wasn’t going to end well.

Not for me, anyway.
