CHAPTER - ONE
I never knew that when you wish upon a star, it comes true.
Things like that happened many times in movies, but never in real life. Yet, when I woke up, today morning, I had changed. I had become different. The wish I made last night, had come true. And I didn’t know how. My father spit out his coffee when he saw me today morning as I was leaving for school. Usually, we didn’t speak much with each other. My mother’s death had created a barrier between us father and daughter. So as my father stood with his mouth open, I grabbed an apple and left for school.
I received the same reaction when I walked through the double doors at school.
I was stared at the entire day. I even heard some of the comments people passed about me. Some were nice; whereas some people presumed I had a liposuction and plastic surgery over the summer. However, no matter what theories I made up, how many times I thought, I didn’t get an answer. What happened last night? I wanted to know. How did I change from my usual self to this person who looked like a supermodel? I swung my legs over the bed, and walked outside, to my balcony. My eyes immediately fell onto the numerous stars in the sky. Surely, the stars couldn’t be responsible for this, right? There was absolutely no theory that could explain what had happened.
“Hello.” A voice spoke.
“Hey.” I turned towards the person and then turned back in front, absentmindedly. And then my eyes went wide. What in the world? I staggered back, holding my hands in front of me. A scream was bubbling up in my throat, but somehow, wasn’t coming out. “Oh, that would be because of me. See, I can’t have you attracting any attention.” He explained. Forget screaming, I tried to speak and it felt like my voice box had been damaged.
He was a man that was for sure. He had a mask over his face, so only his light hazel eyes were seen. He was tall and was clad in black and I kept wondering over and over again why he was on my balcony. Was he here to kidnap me? I mean, who would want me? Actually, scratch that, with this new look, everybody would want me. “Yeah, okay, I get that you love your new self, but don’t get too cocky or I’ll have to turn you back into looking a hamster.” The man said, eyes twinkling. He came towards me, and I screamed even though my voice couldn’t be heard and unconsciously, scratched his leather gloves.
When I opened my eyes, he was looking at the cuts on the gloves, before turning his angry eyes to mine. He had his concentration on removing the gloves when I tried to run towards the door, but they shut close suddenly. “Do you think you can just run, after spoiling my very, very expensive gloves?” He asked, in a deep voice, something that would scare a little child into entering a closet and never coming out.
I nodded and then regretted it instantly.
The last thing I wanted to do was to anger this man – this creature – who assumed my balcony was a vacationing spot.
“So, you’re being sarcastic?” He asked, in a deathly voice. I shook my head, immediately. “Good girl,” The black mask over his face, and being dressed completely in black gave a scary vibe to this man. He looked like he was sent to assassinate me and that terrified me all the more. He kept walking towards me as I struggled to open the door, with my hands behind me. I kept trying to open it and just as he reached out to me, the doors unlocked and I fell onto the carpeted floor of my bedroom. I pushed myself back up with my elbows and shut the door before he could get inside. I stayed against the door for a long time. I didn’t move. I didn’t know what was out there and why it was out to get me.
And then a thought occurred to my mind, “What if it was the reason for my change?” I asked myself, out loud. It fit perfectly. This was the first time I saw the thing and it was exactly after I had changed into this person. Also, I clearly remembered him saying that he’d change me back if I got too cocky. And then another thought got into my head. “What if what happened wasn’t real, just a fragment of hallucination?” I thought, out loud. I had that problem. When I was little, I would talk to things that weren’t seen to the human eyes, and see things that didn’t exist. At least, that was what my father had told me.
Somehow, though, I didn’t remember anything from my childhood. Except, my mother’s face, I didn’t have any memories of her, or my grandparents, or anybody. There were no memories of friends, no memories of going on trips with my parents, nothing. Slowly, taking a deep breath, I opened the door to the balcony and stepped outside. There was nothing. I hit my head with my hand. Of course, it wasn’t true. But it seemed so real. I looked down the railing, and around, but there was nothing. My heart calmed down, and I sighed. I walked back towards the room when something caught my feet and I froze.
I looked down slowly, praying that it wasn’t what it was. My eyes trailed downwards, and my heart that had just calmed down, started beating even faster and my breath stopped. It was the glove. That same, damn, leather glove that I had scratched on. It was like a sign. A sign that thing had left behind, so I would understand that he was here. He was real. He had talked to me.
I felt nauseous.
Holding the glove in my hand, I kept running my finger on the scratches. I had hoped it was a hallucination; something that was caused by my imagination, because that was more comforting than knowing that what happened minutes ago was real.
That thing was the reason I woke up like this, and he was the only one who had answers.
