Chapter 9: Divided
Mako quickly gathered her books when Penelope appeared next to her. “Ready to go?” She asked.
“Hey, thanks for letting me copy your notes,” she told the boy.
“No problem,” he said while strapping his black side bag over his head. “You looked like you couldn’t see.”
“You have glasses?” Penelope asked with her puzzled face pointed at them.
“No, it’s just really far from here okay,” Mako answered with Penelope nodding in agreement. They all walked out of the empty classroom, the hallways were full of chattering students and arched gateways which led to courtyards with green rolling hills that glistened from the autumn rain.
“What class do we have next?” Mako asked Penelope.
“It says Anthropology of the Occult, whatever that means,” Penelope shrugged on a sigh.
“It’s the study of how magic and rituals play a vital role in developing our society,” the boy added coolly. “I believe Professor Barns teaches it,” he said. Mako and Penelope read the schedule to check; and he was correct.
“Hey, I didn’t catch your name?” Penelope asked.
He froze for a brief moment, “Aiden, Aiden Phoenix.”
Mako noticed Penelope turn pale as paper when she heard the boy’s name, she was surprised but not Aiden; he looked familiar with that reaction. He quickly scurried off and entered their next class, sitting as far as possible and behind everyone like before.
The slid down the desks, patiently waiting for their new teacher. “You want to tell me what just happened?” Mako whispered.
Penelope shrugged. “Nothing.”
Mako’s brow arched with doubt. “Really,” she said. “Because you looked like you got caught doing something bad.”
Penelope took a big gulp from her bottle. “I’m not supposed to talk to any member of the Phoenix Family.”
