Chapter 40
Orion glanced down at her for a brief moment, his gaze calm and steady, which brought a sense of peace to Lemira. Alaric, however, was furious, "What do you mean by that? We're her guardians. What right do you have to do this?"
The lawyer blocked Alaric's path, "Sir, Lemira has filed for a restraining order for her safety. You're now required to stay away from Lemira for six months. If you attempt anything that could harm her, you'll be facing legal action!" Alaric was so shocked he couldn't utter a word, a mix of rage and guilt washing over him.
Lucian felt a wave of defeat. It was only then he truly realized he might lose his sister.
He spoke softly, "Lemmy, Lucian wasn't good enough before, and I let you down. But I promise, it'll be different from now on. Can't you just drop this, please?"
Lemira slowly raised her head, her eyes clear, "I think it's better this way."
It wasn't necessary anymore. After she spoke, she turned and left.
Lucian felt a knot in his throat, his eyes slightly misty. He had indeed hurt Lemira. She now refused to believe his words, nor was she willing to return to the Langston family!
Alaric's eyes instantly reddened as he watched Lemira walk away. How could she leave? How could she walk away from the Langstons? She was their sister.
Alaric, in a panic, turned to Lucian, "Lucian, think of something, she can't just leave! We're family!"
Without Lemira, what about the championship finals?
Lucian managed a bitter smile, "Knowing that, why did you hit her in the first place?"
Alaric was instantly speechless. Indeed, he was the first to strike!
Now, Alaric regretted his impulsiveness. But it was all because Evelina threatened to hurt herself with a blade!
Alaric turned to Evelina, his tone accusatory, "Why would you do something so dangerous?"
All of this was because of Evelina.
"Alaric, I just wanted to cool Lemmy's temper so she'd join the team. I did it all for you."
Evelina felt guilty but wouldn't admit it.
Alaric found it laughable, "You think self-harm would calm her down? You were clearly guilt-tripping her!"
Evelina's expression froze. How Alaric had suddenly become wise?
Lucian tried to ease the tension, "Come on, Alaric, ease up a bit."
"Lucian, it's true. I never asked Evelina to hurt herself to persuade Lemira to join the team. She acted on her own, leading to all this mess!"
Alaric thought it over and it didn't sit right with him.
Evelina, looking pitiable, said, "I'm sorry, Alaric. I was being too stupid. I was desperate and could only think of that. I know I was wrong and shouldn't have done that. I'll apologize to Lemmy and clear things up." Seeing Evelina's genuine apology, Alaric softened, "Alright, just don't do anything like this again."
But the image of Lemira's departing figure weighed heavily on him.
Evelina turned to smiles, reverting to the obedient and cheerful sister. But deep down, she loathed Lemira.
Today, she thought her act would win Alaric back and drive a wedge between Lemira and Alaric. If not for that school doctor's meddling!
Evelina's eyes darted around as she said, "Lucian, what's going on between Lemmy and that school doctor?"
Lucian's face was a mix of complexity, "I'm not sure."
"I'm worried Lemmy might be getting conned. After all, the Langston family is wealthy and influential. Some lowly school doctor might be trying to climb the social ladder through Lemmy." Alaric frowned, "That school doctor dares to scheme?"
Lucian's eyes turned cold, "I'll bring her back and make that doctor disappear from Lyria." The Langston family wasn't to be trifled with.
Evelina's eyes flickered. Without that doctor to advise, Lemira would revert to the vulnerable girl they once knew.
Soon, the people sent to find them reported back, "Mr. Lucian Langston, we couldn't locate Ms. Langston or the doctor."
It was then Lucian began to panic. Lemira was missing?
