Wereball Serie - Along Came A Mate

Chapter 41

“Hello Bunny Doc”

This strange sense of calmness overwhelmed me upon hearing that voice. As had always happened since I first spoke to him.

Rudolph came to see me, to meet me for the very first time. Lucien, that was his real name.

It must be the presence I had sensed behind me.

However, when I turned around, ready to greet my phone friend, ready to smile at him for the very first time, I saw only werewolves fighting or chatting, scattered everywhere, in groups or in two or three. Some were staring at us, but I barely noticed or cared.

Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted my father in an intense, almost violent conversation with the same big man who had cheered Logan.

I frowned.

My eyes went back to my mate. He was there, his lips slightly swollen from my kiss; my mark of possession, my territory.

God, his lashes were so thick. Dark blond and thick. And his skin was as soft as the rippling muscles and rocks could be. His lips were just perfect, made for my kisses. The lower one was fatter, perfect for gnawing.

The weird thing was that he had a look I couldn’t quite decipher. He was studying me intently as if he expected me to turn into a witch and fly away on an imaginary broom. I followed his slowly rising hand, the bulge of the muscle flexing and how his hand scratched his neck.

When he opened his mouth, silence came out. Then he closed it again and took a deep breath. And once again I got lost, noticing every detail. I wished I had a tape measure to measure the circumference of his pectorals and how much his sculpted chest expanded when he breathed.

There was something my mind was whispering to me, but in my daze I couldn’t hear it. It was the fault of the sparks and the dominant presence of the creature in front of me.

But where was Rudolph?!

“Lucien?” I called using his real name, looking behind my mate. Again, there was no answer. There was no one.

My eyes fell on my mate when I heard that voice. The voice.

“Lucien is the name of my wolf.”

When the sparks exploded in my hands, I looked at them raising my eyebrows. I could see that his big rough but gentle hands had grabbed mine and he had crouched down to be at my same level.

Rudolph was there again. Inside Logan’s mouth. Logan ate Rudolph!

I foolishly grabbed his cheeks and pulled them, flexing them. He had to be wearing a mask. But he wasn’t.

It was not possible to recreate the sparks even if one had an electric shock or a wire.

Because magic couldn’t be recreated. Never.

“I don’t understand.” My voice was calm. I was perplexed. It must have been a joke old Rudolph made.

Feeling a wave of irritation, I called him again. “Come out now, Rudolph, it’s not funny anymore!” then I giggled even though it sounded more like a dead duck than a genuine laugh.

“Yvaine,” the chills ran down my spine, “Listen, we need to talk. I-”

Anger flooded me and I brushed his hands away as if he had vipers instead of fingers.

“No, I have to find Rudolph. He is hiding somewhere.”

Before I could do anything else, I began to cry and tremble. Then I stopped and started laughing like crazy.

“Because you can’t be him. You just can’t.”

Then something clicked. It all made sense. For a moment I cursed my good family for the good values they had raised me in, and for how I had become almost naive to trust people that way.

My heart halted completely. My breath caught in my throat as I lost myself in those gray depths. My limbs fell loose, my body completely numb.

Logan was Rudolph.

Lucien was Logan.

My vision became nearly black and white with the assimilation of information.

Terminator, or Logan, the future Alpha of Dark Diamond was my mate and owner of my heart. Logan was in every beat of my heart, having found his way into the tortuous ways of its vessels.

He was also Rudolph, the guy I had been talking to on the phone and writing endlessly for weeks, telling him many private things about myself and my mate. Private things about himself!

“Oh God.” I covered my mouth with my hand and shook my head.

My heart tried to hammer its way through my chest, his words ringing in my ears. Pieces of past conversations echoed in the memories.

“Impossible” I mumbled, my eyes filled with the overwhelming emotion I felt.

How one single individual could cause so much and how another could contain so much was a mystery.

Before either of us could make a sound, before the last glimmer of hope that this was an all prank arranged by that mischievous reindeer could die, suddenly three werewolves attacked us from both sides, coming fast and threatening. I didn’t even have to scream in alarm or defend myself. Logan pushed me away, out of the reach of claws and fangs. And goddess if he knew what he was doing!

He lunged to the left and grabbed one by the arm, throwing him to the ground. Before the man could get up, he pounded his fists on his chest. The other attacker ended up in a suffocating grip, kicking and wriggling, out of breath, unable to free himself. Grim, deadly, Logan was in control, comfortable in violence. And his cool, calm expression troubled me a little. I heard a disgusting snap before the third rolled off in a swirl of broken bones.

When I didn’t move, just stared, he took my hand in his bigger one. Before I could react, he pulled my arm forward, bent down and pressed his lips to my knuckles. His eyes were intense, his irises red. He breathed deeply into my skin and my scent hushed the growls that came from within him. My anxiety spiked and I pulled back. He released my hand, not surprised that I refused him.

“Sorry,” he muttered, closing his eyes for a second.

I covered my mouth when sobs made their way out.

“Yvaine, please don’t cry, we can-”

“Do not touch me!” I screamed, hugging myself and stepping back.

He said nothing, just stood there staring at me. Without coming closer to me. If I didn’t know, I’d think he was shocked, shaken.

God, he was so big up close that now I could breathe again, and with that slightly shadowed face he was more menacing than handsome.

Clearly I had been so deranged to believe I didn’t have to trust what people had gossiped about him. The terminator, the scammer, the one who always cheat.

“This is a nightmare.” The look of pain and guilt that crossed those beautiful, perfectly sculpted features made me cringe.

I wanted to get a gigantic pair of scissors, perhaps like Edward Sscissorhands scissors, and cut off my head, to disconnect heart from brain, and be able to think clearly without the havoc of emotions and feelings.

I could not do anything. Not with him, the love of my life.

I thought I was strong, but I wasn’t.

When he touched me again, when I felt the relief I didn’t want to feel, I took the next exit. The easiest way:

‘Lachlan!’

It was like a scream in a dark, empty room echoing through the walls. I called him through our private mind link. I couldn’t speak.

‘What’s wrong!?’ His immediate response was filled with concern,

Please come and get me. I- .. I can’t-′

When my brother’s scent approached like a fireball, Logan stiffened and looked at me treacherously, as if he didn’t believe I had called my twin.

“What happened?” My brother growled, crossing his arms over his chest. The gaze bounced between me and my mate like a ping pong ball.

Ignoring Lachlan, I marched over to Logan and stopped just as I was in front of him. He stood there, the panic in his eyes partially replaced by a softness that almost made me regret my next move. I hit him in the head with an umbrella that I found there on the ground.

Twice in a row.

It was like hitting a closet with a pillow but it made me feel better.

Then I took the necklace off my neck and pulled it to his chest, almost shivering at his broken expression as he picked it up.

“Yvaine, stay. We need to talk.”

Shaking my head I walked over to my brother who was burning Logan with my flaming gaze.

“Please.” God, his voice made me cry and my knees gave out.

“What the fuck did you do to my sister?” Lachlan growled fiercely. Tension crackled in the air.

My tears were enough to awake the beast.

Fur covered his bare skin and his shorts broke when a giant wolf appeared in his place.

Logan, also being an Alpha, did not refuse the challenge and growled back, even though he did not shift into his wolf. His posture was that of a predator ready to lash out.

Then the wolf Lachlan lunged. Logan opened his arms, ready to fight the beast.

“Stop!” I jumped in between with my arms outstretched. In between the two people I loved the most. The truth was that Logan had taken a big chunk of my heart and was now lost forever, now it belonged to him.

“Lachlan, he is my mate.” I sobbed, my eyes on the ground. The animal growl stopped instantly.

“What!?” It was not my brother, but my father, who in the meantime must have joined us. The big man I understood by now was Logan’s father, standing next to dad. He looked from me to his son with furrowed brows.

“Yvaine, is this the truth?” My father asked, almost softly, perhaps noticing my tears and the condition of my face.

“Logan. Is this girl your mate?”

There was a group of spectators even though most of the stadium was intent on quarrelling and fighting. Logan kept staring at me, the necklace in his thick veined hands; his knuckles were white.

“She is, dad.”

A sharp torrent of words followed, an avalanche of insults with a pinch of threats. While the tirade went on, Logan’s glowing gaze stayed on me. And mine on the floor.

When a familiar, warm pair of arms lifted me off the ground, my arms tightened around his neck, trying to bring him closer, seeking comfort that will never be possible. How could you have comfort when the person created to comfort you was the one who created the biggest discomfort?

“Put my mate down, Lachlan.” Logan snarled, stepping forward.

“Why don’t you calm down a little, Thor,” another slightly familiar-looking wolf said. “Let’s break this party and go to the real one in the pack, what do you say?”

Logan’s powerful body stiffened. For a moment it seemed like he was going to say something harsh, but then he did not.

Logan allowed himself to be pulled back, but he kept his eyes on Lachlan and me.

‘Lachlan, take me home please.’

A part of me, the bestial animal, was already suffering the torment of being without my mate.

Without my Rudolph.
