Wereball Serie - Along Came A Mate

Chapter 35

Theft was considered a crime in our modern society, where punishments varied depending on the severity of the act.

I, of course, had never stolen anything in my entire life, at least not material things from shops, museums, or people. But certain folks argued otherwise.

According to my father, I had stolen his heart when his eyes met mine for the very first time, seeing my mother’s eyes, the love of his life, staring at him from the little bundle of joy (me).

According to Uncle Andrew, I was a professional thief in my daily life, stealing the hearts of all the were-boys.

According to my mother, I had stolen Aunt Margaret’s fur when I was 10; but we all knew she had been the responsible of the crime and then blamed it on me, as no one would take it out on sweet angelic Yvaine.

That morning, though I had not stolen anything in the true sense of the definition, I was behaving exactly like a professional thief who had snatched the loot of the century. Sneaking from corner to corner, checking behind my back, hiding here and there, doing some somersaults my gym teacher would have been proud of.

I was a were-woman on a mission.

The danger increased when I approached my apartment. Instead of using the normal stairs as every sane person would, I climbed the exterior walls.

The game against Dark Diamond was approaching like black clouds on the horizon, a promise of storm and thunder. And I still had not decided whether I was going to go or not.

Once inside the safety of my room, I exhaled the pressure that had resided in my lungs. Amaia was in her room and Makena in the kitchen with a few friends. Tiziano had just left to go to support the team and prepare the cheering strategy against Dark Diamond... or rather the post-game war strategy.

After locking the door and patting Pluto, I took off my hat and sunglasses that had partially covered my identity and threw myself on the bed. My hand, as with a consciousness of its own, fished out of the plastic bag and gently pulled out the hidden treasure. After tearing off the protective film, I stopped to admire my new possession: a poster of the Dark Diamond Quarterback that I had bought at a newsstand.

Logan stood there in the foreground, his clenched fist reaching to the sky, the signature grin full of challenge, his posture radiating confidence, and those liquid silver eyes stared back at mine... those same eyes that I was sure had stolen several hearts. His blond hair was pushed back with a few strands falling over his prominent forehead. He wore his team shirt, with the infamous number 8 and shorts that emphasized those strong legs even more. The poster caused me premature ventricular contractions...or, in other words, it made my heart skip a beat.

After hanging it on the wall and then hiding behind a painting, I changed into my pajamas and headed for the living-room to work a little. When studying one’s passion, it became a pleasant hobby rather than an imposition, so I did not notice how minutes turned into hours nor what was occurring around me.

The scribbling of my pen on paper was only broken when two noisy werewolves entered the house.

“He has a mate! I am telling you!” Tiziano appeared with my brother behind him. Lachlan had a towel around his neck and looked like he had just come out of the shower, with droplets dripping from his wet hair. I could see wounds and scratches that were healing, certifying the violence of the pre-match training.

“Anyone could have posted that picture and spread the rumor.” The latter said boldly, biting a steak sandwich while putting his gym bag on the floor.

Curiosity began to scrape.

“What are you talking about?” I asked after they both kissed me on the cheek and looked at what I was doing. Tiziano stole my notes, checking them with interest before adding his input.

“The Terminator has apparently found his mate.”

Thank God I had just finished my second cup of cappuccino or I would have suffocated and died, never knowing what they had to say about the matter.

“W-who?”

They stared at me strangely. “I meant, who, um, what?”

I coughed a little, chewing my lips.

“The DD’s captain found his mate, but no one knows who she is or for how long it has been.” Tiziano explained, biting into an apple, and spreading himself on the sofa.

“I say the lad just ran out of stamina and had to find an excuse to keep his girls away.” One of them stated.

“Nah, I say someone cut off his dick after he screwed his mother or sister... or both.“The other retorted.

I winced at this, thinking about the great loss of blood if it really happened.

“Please! I think he fabricated the news so his father will pass him the title faster.”

Both were unaware of how deeply their statements affected me, eroding the little trust I had in a mate with whom I had never spoken or whose intentions I did not know.

“Well, if it’s true, poor girl!”

“Why? Do you think he will betray his mate?” I investigated with a neutrality that surprised me.

“This would be the least of her problems.” My twin said casually before attacking his second sandwich. Two more to go.

“I hear he’s a dominator in bed. The dude likes it dirty and hard.”

“And I heard he always likes threesomes because one girl is not enough.”

By then, I felt nauseous, and I had to leave making an excuse.

After a second, I tried to call Archie but then I realized it was already too late in Europe, so I hung up. Amaia was probably not the right person to talk to. She would start chatting about a biological reasoning behind all that and I did not need it at the moment.

Makena was at her parents’ house...

So, I ended up calling Rudolph who replied after several rings.

“Hey Bunny Doc.” His husky voice, as usual, tightened my stomach.

“Hello” I pouted unconsciously, and he must have picked it up.

“What’s wrong?”

Nibbling on my lower lip, the previous conversation replayed in my head.

“My brother and Tiziano said something about my mate that upset me”

He asked what they said, and I informed him about it, leaving out the part of Logan’s sexual needs.

“Don’t you know you shouldn’t listen to gossip? The guy posted a picture about you even though he never used the fuc-, er, the social network. And the caption certifies that it was posted directly by him.”

“Yeah, but they said he likes to do some things.” I blushed, biting my lip.

“Ok ... that doesn’t explain much. Give me more details, Yvaine.”

“That he has sex with several girls at the same time because one isn’t enough for example.”

“So what? He was not the one who invented threesomes nor the first to do it. I bet your twin and your friend Tatiano have done the same many times too,”

He argued, growing frustrated for some reasons. He had always enjoyed defending his captain and Alpha’s son as expected of a reliable pack member.

“What if he doesn’t like it when we, uhm, mate?”

“When?” He seemed amused but then continued.

“It’s impossible, he already loves you.”

I gasped. “No, he doesn’t!”

He huffed, while I stared at the phone for a long moment.

“But what if he asked me to, uh, ‘share’ with other people? As an open relation because he has, uhm, needs?”

“To hell with it,” he seemed annoyed at that idea, then he exhaled loudly before speaking. “I don’t know anyone who shares a mate with others and I’m sure he won’t want it either.”

“But I don’t have that much experience with guys. What if he doesn’t like it?”

“He will love it so much that you won’t be able to walk for weeks, believe me, I know it.” He shot back sarcastically while my jaw dropped, feeling the butterflies awaken at that prospect.

Rudolph said he was busy so we ended the call after he reminded me that we will meet in two days, after the game.

Before going to sleep, I logged into Instagram. It did not take long for me to access his profile.

A little squeal escaped my lips when I saw a new photo of Logan, that was not there yesterday, after I had looked at his photos.

My mate, who seemed to be even more beautiful from the last photo that was posted, was showing a necklace with a black moon. It was identical to mine...

The caption of the photo said that he had found his soul mate and that he was happily ‘Taken’. Unconsciously, I curled my fingers around my necklace and a smile came to my lips only to die when I read a new message from an unknown number....

‘Hi Yvaine. I am Logan from DD. How are you? Do you want to meet me after the game on Sunday?’
