Chapter Warming 13

Chapter 13

Mack entered the apartment. He stood before the coffee table and said respectfully,” I’ve fixed Mrs. Layton’s door, boss.”

He found the atmosphere a little weird but couldn’t pinpoint what was wrong.

An hour later, Spencer went into the bedroom to check Lucille’s temperature. Fortunately, the fever had subsided, and he sighed in relief.

“Now that the fever has subsided, you just need to make sure she sticks to a clean diet when she wakes up. Tell her to take her medication and rest for a couple of days. She’ll be good to go after that,” Lucas said.

He pushed his glasses up and continued, “I noticed that she keeps a lot of chocolate and candy around, so she probably also has low blood sugar. She should be fine as long as she doesn’t bleed, though.”

There wasn’t anything else he could do, so he left. He had plenty of work waiting for him at the hospital.

Lucille didn’t know how long she slept. When she woke up in a daze, it was already 3: 00 pm. She slowly propped herself up in bed and rubbed her forehead. Her head still hurt a little, but it wasn’t as heavy as before. It seemed her fever had subsided after a

nap.

After a few seconds, she noticed that the dressing on her wound looked newer than before. She stared at it for a while as some hazy memories flashed in her mind. She seemed to recall answering a call and seeing a familiar figure while half–asleep.

At the time, she’d been too muddle–headed and in too much discomfort to tell whether anything had really happened. But if it wasn’t real, who changed the dressing on her wound?

As soon as the thought formed in her mind, someone opened her bedroom door. Her head shot up, and she met a dark gaze. She was taken aback.

Spencer was standing at the door. Was she dreaming?

“You’re awake. Do you feel uncomfortable or unwell?” He strode into the room.

When Lucille snapped to her nennen, Spencer was already standing before her. She’d yet to say anything when he crouched so he was eye level with her.

Lucille was dumbfounded. She didn’t seem to be dreaming. He was really there in the flesh!

He placed a hand on her forehead and felt her temperature. It was still a little warm, but he said, “Good. You’re not burning up anymore.”

Lucille blinked at him in confusion. “W–What are you doing c?”

Spencer didn’t miss her surprise and confusion. He rubbed her on the head and smiled faintly, his tenderness and appreciation for her evident. “You should eat something first. I’ll explain everything to you later.”

Her last meal had been ages ago, and the fever had tormented her. Lucille was at her weakest now, physically and mentally. She was an ordinary human who had no choice but to hide her true self due to certain reasons.

She also wished for someone to truly love and care for her, so Spencer’s tenderness was an immense blow to her heart. It seemed to make the cracks on her sealed heart spread further.

She was terrified this would turn out to be nothing but a dream, though. She was. afraid she would become addicted to this feeling of being loved.

“Spencer.” Lucille looked at him. Her eyes carried hints of fear, glumness, and other emotions that Spencer couldn’t discern.

He said, “I’m here. Talk to me.”

This was her first time calling him by his name. He supposed she could’ve sounded a little less formal, but he still loved how it sounded on her lips.

“Don’t be so nice to me. Don’t show me how gentle and caring you can be. I’m afraid I’ll become dependent on you,” she said truthfully.

She was calm and composed. She didn’t want to give him or herself any hope if it wouldn’t lead to anything.
