Chapter 43
Kendra
.
"We are here," Smith said, with a plain face. He's not a bad person, but the fact that he has that blank uninterested face makes me feel so off.
I can't believe I'm free. Right now we are standing by an isolated bridge that's not too far from where I live or rather, where I used to live.
"I'll be leaving now, take care." He said, and without waiting for another second, disappeared. That's the f**cking power of teleportation. That is how we got here, and it didn't even take a second, it took only a blink of an eye.
Shit, now I've got to go home on my own. I looked around the surrounding, it was quiet and empty here, no wonder Smith chose this place for the teleportation, this way, no one will be able to see the weird and unusual appearance scene.
.
I started walking towards our house, not wanting anyone to see me at the moment, I chose to follow the long route that people hardly do.
Walking in silence, thinking about my messed up situation, I started hearing unusual sounds in the bushes behind me. The ruffling continued and it seemed to get louder and louder by the second.
Having the weird feeling that was ever it was, it had its eyes on me, made me bend slightly to pick a stick. It wasn't a big one and I doubt it'll be of any help. But just in case whatever it is out there is out for me, I'll have something to at least try to protect myself with. Even if it won't make any difference.
"Who is it? You better f**cking show yourself you freak!" just when it was about to jump out of the bushes and attack me, I held my stick out and hit whoever it was hard. I did this continuously without even looking up to see who it was.
"Hey, hey, hey !" I stopped slowly to look at him.
"I'm not going to hurt you," he said a smile on his usually blank face.
"Smith! It's you, you scared me."
He didn't say a word the smile on his face quickly returning to the usual blankness.
"Why are you back?" I asked, realizing that he didn't have any intention of telling me on his own. He's normally a man of few words, from what I've learned within the few moments we've spent together of course. but apart from that, he's one of the less abusive and hateful vampires among the ones working close to Nicholas. He's different from Dimitri and the rest, making me glad that it's him that was assigned to bring me home.
"His Highness said I have to make sure that you are home safely. I'm just trying to complete my job." He said plainly.
Who would believe that he has gone back to the castle and returned in such a short period?
"You really are special aren't you?" He added, his face still held no emotions but I could tell he was trying to start a conversation.
"Well, I don't know about that," I murmured as I reduced my pace.
"Ohh, and you aren't curious?"
"About what?"
"Why His Highness treats you this way, why do you get treatments no prisoner has ever gotten? It has always been a law in our coven that once a captive is deemed useless, we get rid of it. Either we feed on it, but since you are a half vampire, your blood is just a waste of time. But then the next option is to feed you to the animals. Or just cut your throat out and throw your body. We can do anything but keep such victims alive. But your case is surprisingly different." His words were creeping me out, something in my guts was telling me that it was the reason he came back. Maybe Nicholas changed his mind about freeing me and sent Smith back to kill me instead.
"What about the doctor, Khalil, he was kept alive too even though he was of no use." I barked, remembering the old man and his journey. He really has a dramatic life, as dramatic as mine has turned out to be. I was too occupied with the excitement of being free that I'm only just remembering that I never had a chance to say goodbye to the merry old man.
"The prince's aunt was in love with him. That's the only reason he got such a chance. So I believe his situation is different from yours." He does have a good point there though, it is true that his situation isn't the same as mine. The prince kept me alive only because he assumed that Kara would come after me. After she proved him wrong, he had no reason to keep me but still did. Maybe deep down in his heart he believed that Kara would come after me.
"Well, maybe I was just Lucky."
"Hmmph, luck?"
"Yes, luck" Even though I didn't really believe in luck, that was the only answer right now.
"And Smith, I never knew you were also interested in the castle's small talk," I said, trying to turn the table.
We were getting closer and closer to my house, and the unsettling feeling in my stomach kept increasing. My conversation with Smith was the only thing keeping my mind off the thoughts.
"I don't gossip miss Kendra, and I'm not bringing up this topic based on what is going on in the castle. Rather, I'm just asking based on curiosity"
"Well, I guess you now know that I can't help you with your answers, since I myself don't have them," I said, ending the conversation.
We were now standing by the gate of our villa, and looking at it reminded me of how I ran for my life from Zaid and Blake, not wanting to even glimpse at the only home I've ever known.
"Thank you for ev..." I offered to Smith but paused when I noticed that he was already making his way into the house.
The gates weren't locked and there were no security men.
Walking behind Smith who seemed to know my house more, I made my way to the living room.
This place holds a lot of memories, more than I can remember.
It holds good and bad memories, the horrible ones, more than the good ones of course. when Dad left us, he left with all the colors and happiness in my life. Every good memory was gone and all the love and affection were replaced with agony and pain.
Not to mention my mom was killed in this very room.
.
"Kara?" I yelled, even though I was mad at her, I still wish that she'll be here somewhere. I have no choice but to accept that she's the only family I have left, and having her here was the only way life could get better.
"I don't think your sister's here. The place seems empty, don't you have workers and caretakers?" Smith asked.
"We do, they must have left after what happened."
"We can check to see if there's anyone home?" he proposed.
I was about to tell him not to worry and that I could handle things from here, but changed my mind, knowing that once he leaves, I'll be all alone.
"Yeah, let's do that."
.
We've looked and checked every corner of the house and there was no sign of a living soul. I wonder where Kara is and what she was up to. But that wasn't the big question.
What am I going to do from here? Should I just move on with my life, go back to school, and pretend all this shit never happened. But then, people will question me about what happened to us, how we mysteriously went missing.
And then, the worst of all, I won't be allowed to live alone since I'm not legal yet. I'll be eighteen in a some months but till then I'll be forced to live in a foster home. I could barely live well with my family, how in hell am I supposed to do it with strangers?
"Now that I'm sure you are home safely, I will take my leave."
"Thanks a lot, Smith"
"I was just doing my job." Then he bowed slightly like a gentle man in a historical movie before turning his back to me and walking away.
I just stared at the man in front of me, while I thought about my life which has become even more pathetic than it was when I was imprisoned.
That's when the idea struck me, I know it's crazy stupid, but hey, it's the only choice I've got right now.
"WAIT!"
