Chapter 31
"Wait, you are madam Amber's nephew aren't you? The one who appeared before their sudden disappearance." Helen said, with a displeased look.
"I'm going to get you reported to the police! I'll get you reported to my pastor! you bad omen!" She said using her stick to hit max as hard as she can.
"No, Nana, Max is helping us right now," I said trying to stop her, while Josh stood there, laughing and enjoying the show.
"Every thing was fine until he showed up! He's a bad omen!" She continued.
"Miss kara, after you left, some men came over to ask of you," Tracy said, which made Nana Helen stop hitting Max as she joined the conversation.
"Yes, they were all wearing black and they acted in terrifying manners," Nana said.
"They asked us to call them whenever you guys show up," Tracy concluded. I could feel my heart beating hard and fast as if it'll jump out. I was terrified, this doesn't sound good.
"Can you give us the number they handed to you?" Josh said, finally joining the Conversation.
"Yes Tracy, do you have it?" I asked getting what Josh was trying to do.
Tracy brought out a piece of paper from her pocket and handed it to me.
"Now I want you two to get ready and leave this place by sunrise," I said.
"What? I'm not leaving until I make sure that Amber and Kendra are okay" Nana Helen said.
"Nana, Mom, and Kendra are fine okay? we just had to leave for some reasons." Saying those words actually made me wish they were true. Fighting back tears, I continued.
"Look, you guys can't stay here, it's not safe. those men are dangerous, I don't want you getting in trouble. Just stay away from them, and if they ever happen to bump into you, tell them you left because you got tired of waiting."
"Okay miss Kara if you say so." Tracy said.
"Nana, you heard what miss Kara said, it's not safe. We need to leave."
Nana Helen started complaining and Tracy kept trying to convince her.
"That's settled, now can we go to sleep?" I asked yawning a bit. I didn't want to think too much about the mess.
"Sure, but we are all going to stay in the same room," Max said which sounded gross. I mean, I have spent nights with them before, but that was in the woods, not a room!
"There's no way I'm doing that," I said, trying my best to keep a straight face.
"We have to stay together for our safety. It's not safe here and you know it." Max said.
"Just don't argue kara, I can't let anything wrong happen to you." He said and walked away.
"Okay fine, but we'll all stay in my room," I said smiling, hoping it will lighten his mood.
.
I have been awake for hours, I can't sleep and I just don't know why. I have been able to sleep in the woods but now that I'm home, there's this thing that keeps reminding me that my life isn't normal and will never be. The walls keep reminding me of mom and Kendra, we weren't the happiest family, but we were just fine. With Kendra always trying to make things hard for us, getting drunk even though she was a minor, and all that stuff. I remember how much I miss my not so perfect yet perfect family. Now I know what they saying you never know what you have until you lose it means. It was finally making sense to me.
.
"What are you doing," Max's grumpy sleepy voice said, distracting me. He gave me a weird look as he entered the kitchen.
"I was up early, so I figured I should prepare breakfast," I said, paying little attention to his stares. Cooking isn't really something I do, since we have people in charge of that, but I do know how to prepare noodles so I thought of doing that to keep my head out of the whole mom and Kendra stuff.
"I know noodles isn't the ideal breakfast stuff, but at least it'll make you all stronger," I added this time facing max who had an amused smirk on his dreamy face.
"You know we don't really need food right.?" He asked, the smirk still on his face.
"We only eat food for the show. Some vampires even get an upset stomach whenever they shove anything other than blood in it." He added, making a point. I mean I've seen Nathan eat when we were on our journey, but he never took the whole food stuff seriously and so did the rest of them, so many things about vampires that I need to learn.
"Hey," Josh said, walking in.
"What's it with the fancy clothes," he asked in his usual humorous tone.
"It's an apron Josh!" I yelled.
"Now sit, breakfast is about to be served." But he wouldn't stop staring at the apron.
"What is it Josh? Never seen an apron before?" I asked making a really stupid childish face.
"At least not this fancy." He said and something about it made Max laugh.
"So, where are Tracy and her grandma," Josh asked, making he himself comfortable on the table.
"They left this morning," I said. it wasn't easy convincing Nana, she agreed after a lot of pleading. I gave them my credit card, I'm sure the money in there will be enough to start their lives afresh.
"Ohhhh" was his reply, he looked lost at the moment, which doesn't seem like Josh.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing! I just wanted to make Sure they .. Uhmmm left."
"So, let's get this breakfast over with and start our mission," Max said.
"what are we looking for, exactly?" I know it sounds like a stupid question, but it actually makes sense, the only thing I know is that we are looking for a stone, I don't know if it's sapphire or ruby or a diamond, topaz or emerald. I don't know if it's big or small, light or heavy, oval or round. I literally don't know anything about it.
"The stone of light is something none of us have seen before. The vampire king hid it a long time ago, even before I was born." Josh said, digging into his noodles.
"Yeah, Kara, very few vampires have seen it before. But I heard that once you see it, you'll know it." Max added.
"Okay, let's get to work then. Mom's room is the first place we should check, then her study." I had a strong feeling we would find something in her room though. Cause I remember how secretive she have always been. not allowing us to touch her stuff, or even come close to it.
.
Mom's room isn't the most attractive place in our house. It's nice and stuff but in a dark kind of way. The pieces of furniture are all grey and boring! Maybe not liking colors is a vampire thing.
We walked in and the first thing my eyes hit was the king-sized bed in the middle of the room, the side drawers on each side, and her laptop on the left one. The curtains were shut _, as usual,_ a bitter smile crept on my face when my eyes hit the mini refrigerator by the other side of the room. Memories of how I took her wine and questioned her that night came. I shut my eyes and pushed it behind my mind. Her room is the biggest and even when dad was with us they had separate rooms. He does sleep in her room sometimes...when You know_ _ and stuff. But apart from that, he has a separate room.
