Ursanthropy

Chapter 38. Gutted

A/n: I had to update another chapter because two certain readers, of which their names will not be publicly quoted, (but they are PKJ Lover and Meera!) have been forcing me to do this! So, here is one very large chapter! Enjoy! 💛

Doreen

I didn’t know why Jack’s men would come and barge right through the front door, searching for me and yelling like I was a criminal. But as I didn’t know what would happen and what the ghost had been trying to tell me, I quickly took the necklace from the ornament above the mirror and shoved it inside the pocket of my vest.

The eerie feeling of the ghost surrounding me had been gone the moment the men yelled and broke through the door, so now I was alone and couldn’t get away. I stepped out of the bedroom and could see Jack’s warriors coming up the stairs.

“What’s going on!” I yelled to them.

“Sorry Luna, but we have been informed that you have been collaborating with the hunter King, so we have to take you in.” One of the men said and I grew with confusion.

“Who has been telling you that? Because it sure as hell won’t be your Alpha, as he would never sent his men to do something like this!” I yelled angrily, folding my arms to not show that I was frightened by the intimidating stares I got from the five men that stood around me now.

“No, it’s the Beta’s job to keep the Alpha safe, so we are here on his behalf. So, if you’d please...” He gestured me to walk downstairs, following one of his men.

When I asked the question, about who told them about my deceitful whereabouts, which were obvious lies, I feared that this was Dennis’ doing. But hearing this warrior say it out loud had gotten me furious as hell! But I couldn’t act upon my fury even if I wanted to. I’m not strong enough to face five fully trained adult bears and even if I could, I still wouldn’t, as they are loyal to their Alpha and pack. It’s not their fault that their Beta is playing tricks on them.

Besides, I am the daughter of the hunter King, so it’s easy to compel anyone into thinking that I had something to do with the attack from the other day.

So, I sighed and went downstairs, following the warriors towards the truck outside. I got in and they started driving, but instead of following the east road towards the pack house, they went north. I don’t know where they are bringing me, but I don’t like this one bit!

Jack

“Dennis, what have you done?” I asked him again.

“Well, I didn’t have to do much, you were the one that was lacking to do your duties. So, with only a few words to your men and they were eating out of my hands in no time.” He explained, but continued his rant of words as I growled. “During meetings you didn’t participate, you even ignored my questions about pack safety, then you had declined to go on several pack perimeter runs to join your mate in the bedroom and you didn’t even inform your own Beta when an attack was occurring. And during all your absence, all I had to do was to make an appearance, to show the pack that I was picking up your slack.” He grinned, laughing about his own accomplishments.

I hated that he made me look awful towards the pack, but he was right, I had been absent to some important things because I was planning for my own things to happen. For him to be gone and for my pack and mate to be safe! He couldn’t have known about everything that I had done the past few days, but even so, he had taken advantage of it towards my pack. He was able to place doubt in my men’s minds and enforcing their loyalty towards him!

Dennis looked down at his watch and was distracted for a moment. “Your mate will be here soon, Alpha.” He suddenly said and I frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

“Oh, I have captured your mate as calling the hunter King and sending information about our pack is suggested as high treason.” He chuckled.

“You were the one that did that! Not her!” I shouted and stepped forward, shifting my claws outwards, surrounding his neck and squeezing the air out of his oesophagus.

I was angry and my judgement had been clouded for a moment or two, I had to set my plan in motion right away as he had taken Doreen as his captive! This can’t wait any longer!

“Bertha it’s time! Get them to the barn in the north!” I linked her but knew that it was going to take some time before the men, that she has gathered, would find this place. There hadn’t been a moment where I could have explained where this barn was, but I was hoping they would find it soon.

Bertha quickly linked me back saying that she was on it. So, now I have to stall my time. I let go of Dennis’ neck and he coughed and tried to get back his breath.

I hated to have asked for help from people from another pack, but there was no other choice. When I know for sure that Doreen is safely in my arms, I would let those men get into the barn and help me to get the upper hand in this situation.

Of course, I could kill Dennis right now, but as my men were on their way here and they apparently trusted Dennis his judgement I couldn’t let them see me killing him off. They then would never trust me again and things wouldn’t get back to normal after it. My title will be certainly questioned about and that wasn’t something I wanted to happen either. My pack needs their Alpha and even though I was working overtime, making plans to keep them safe from both Dennis and the hunters, they were indoctrinated to believe that I had failed them!

“Doreen, can you hear me?” I linked her.

“Jack?” She replied.

Good, love! Just listen and look out the window of the car you’re in, as if you are bored.” I said to her as I needed her to focus on me and not on anything else. “I need you to brace yourself, because when you arrive here, things will get ugly. Stay as far away from Dennis as you possibly can!”

Doreen

Jack knew that I have been taken, so he must be with Dennis right now. But if he also knew that a probable fight was to occur then I suppose that the time has come for whatever plan Dennis had. I knew he was an asshole that schemes his things carefully, but lying about when my father would come for me and getting two weeks ahead of that plan was something different! And I doubt that Jack had been completely ready for this to happen so soon either.

Jack had linked me some more instructions, before the truck had reached its destination and now I was being pushed out of it to get inside the old barn.

Immediately, I ran towards Jack to stay close to him, as he told me to. He hugged me fiercely but then looked me over to see if I had been hurt.

“Aww, the loving couple.” Dennis said with a foul tongue. He was smiling from ear to ear, but soon changed his stature to something more serious. “As everyone here knows that our Luna has been deceiving us, I hereby sentence you-

“You have no right to sentence her for anything!” Jack interrupted Dennis.

“I thought you would say that, but I am in fact completely in my right to do this, as when the Alpha is no longer able to perform his duties and the pack’s safety is endangered, the Beta can step up to act on the Alpha’s behalf.” He replied and anger rose up from within me.

Dennis even made sure that the warriors, that were with us in the barn, listened to some recording of Jack threatening Dennis, to make sure that indeed their Alpha had been dangerous towards one of his own. His own Beta nonetheless!

I know that Dennis was the instigator to those threats of Jack, but the warriors were conflicted by hearing the recording.

The more time we stood in the barn, listening to Dennis’ wild accusations, the more I had gotten angrier. But I have to follow Jack’s instructions. ’Keep calm, I will get us out of here.’ He had said, so I was now fidgeting with my necklace to keep my mind at ease.

In the car, after Jack was done talking to me, I had put the necklace around my neck again, as I trusted the ghost’s judgement more than I trusted Dennis’. But even though my bond with Jack had been clouded now and my strength had been diminished, I could still feel every ounce of training that Vic has put me through. I know, that should I take the necklace off, I could do some proper damage to Dennis and anyone who stood with him, but it’s not the right time.

Jack

I had noticed that she had been wearing the necklace again and I was curious why she had it now. Not that I wanted to happen what that witch had told me could happen, but still it was a strange timing.

“Where is the proof that my mate has been deceiving us?” I asked Dennis to keep stalling time. Just about ten more minutes before those men would arrive, so I needed Dennis to be distracted.

My warriors looked over towards Dennis now, as they probably didn’t know about any proof either.

“Oh, that’s right. I have seen her talking on a phone, when I had been running perimeter checks. You know, when you didn’t?” He snapped at me and I growled.

Then, as if it was planned like this by Dennis, his phone began to buzz. He smiled and took it out of his pocket and put the caller on speaker. “I suppose you have found the phone?” He said out loud and I could hear one of my warriors respond to him agreeingly.

“Please tell me, where did you find it?” He then asked. The warrior replied that he had found it in one of the nightstands in my bedroom and I listened with surprise. The asshole did went to Doreen, when we were attacked the other night! While she was asleep, he had come into the room and put the phone in there!

“And please indulge me, could you see to whom her recent calls has been to?” Dennis asked now and the warrior confirmed that she has been calling the same number over and over again, and that her last call had been a day before the attack. There even were some texts saying that everything had been in order for the hunters to get started. My warriors gasped at the information and started to look angry towards Doreen.

“No, I haven’t done that! That’s not my phone!” Doreen yelled and pleadingly looked into my eyes.

I know that she isn’t the one who did this, but my warriors wouldn’t have it. They trusted this evidence, and with the fact that I had admitted that Doreen was indeed Damien’s daughter they believed Dennis for his word.

I shushed Doreen, telling her that everything would be alright, knowing that Dennis had set her up with this.

Never could I have thought that he could come up with something like putting a phone in my house and for her to look guilty, but I guess I was wrong. Almost everything I had planned for was going to be in vain, as when Dennis would arise as new Alpha, my calls to other packs and help from outside would be waved away when they would talk to him.

“As these warriors here are to be my witness, I hereby claim my right as Beta to say that our Alpha is no longer able to perform his duties! I will step up in rank and become the saviour of our people!” Dennis said and my warriors started to whisper in disbelief.

“But in order to become Alpha, I have decided to not fight for my title but to hand him and his mate in to the hunter King and in return he will not attack our people! This way our pack will be ruled by someone who can keep up with all the work and everyone will be safe as well!” Dennis continued and one by one the warriors conceded in his words.

I knew they didn’t want to do this, that they didn’t want to give up on me, but there was no other way for them. If Dennis was able to turn in his own Alpha, than what would keep him from supplying that same fate towards the rest of the pack?

One of the warriors looked into my direction and linked me one last time that he was sorry. I shook my head a little, giving him the assurance that he wasn’t to blame.

A pain surged through my head as Dennis has claimed his title, telling everyone in the pack of what had happened. And the five warriors, that were here in the barn with us, added in on the conversation, letting everyone know that it had been true. Anger and sadness ran through my head as I could feel the connection break with every single person I had once under my care.

My mind went blank as I just lost so many people in one moment. This emptiness wasn’t something that I was familiar with, as I had always been a part of this pack, but right now I was feeling hollow, as Dennis had managed to push me out.

I am a rogue.

Dennis had broken my title down to the floor and I was losing ground. But as I lost my title, I was gaining anger instead! I can’t control myself any longer! I am going to kill Dennis, right now!

I pushed Doreen behind me and started to shift, my fur sprung out, my teeth elongated…

“Oh, I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” I suddenly heard a strange deep voice from above us and Doreen gasped.
