Unveiling Samantha by Veronica Wright

Chapter 11

Chapter 11

Brennan rushed over and yanked Samantha back, then quickly checked Adrienne to make sure she wasn’t hurt. Seeing that Adrienne was okay, he whipped around to face Samantha, looking like he was ready to blow a gasket. “Seriously, Samantha? It’s only your second day, and you’re already causing trouble? What’s next, you gonna do this to me?”

Brennan was steaming and totally thought Samantha was ungrateful. He thought Adrienne had just brought her breakfast, and he figured Samantha got ticked and tossed milk on Adrienne before dumping the whole tray.

But Samantha just rolled her eyes, looked from Brennan to Adrienne, and snorted, “Guess we’ll find out Inside, Samantha was sneered in her heart, ‘Really? He’s pinning this on me without a clue?”

Brennan got even madder at Samantha’s ‘I couldn’t care less’ attitude. He was so mad, he actually smacked her, and it left a mark on Samantha’s cheek.

Samantha just took it and felt her cheek burn, thinking, ‘Okay, he hit me first, so now it’s my turn. She glared up at Brennan, who was shaking, totally caught off guard that Samantha, Miss High-and-Mighty, didn’t dodge his hit. Brennan felt a twinge of regret, but Samantha just smirked, made a fist, and before Brennan could even blink, she popped him one. And she didn’t stop there. As Brennan’s head snapped from the punch, she swung with her other hand and nailed him on the other side.

Brennan’s ears started ringing, and everything went fuzzy. Out of nowhere, he got the wind knocked out of him with a kick to the chest. He flew backward six feet and slammed against the wall, then crumpled to the floor. Trying to stand, he felt something weird and tasted metal in his mouth. He spat out blood and saw a couple of white chunks-teeth. “You… How could you!” Brennan tried to shout, but it came out all weird since he was missing those teeth.

Samantha’s throw down turned Adrienne white as a ghost.

But Samantha didn’t even flinch at Brennan’s messed-up yelling. She was just steamed, feeling her own swelling face, thinking. ‘Great, ran into two dummies first thing today”

Then, from down the hall, Conrad’s voice cut in. “She’s your sister! How can you talk like that to her?” he snapped.

Samantha turned to see Conrad marching over with someone else. He closed the distance fast with his long strides. He in the spilled milk on her dress and the tray on the floor. With no hint of feeling, Conrad just looked at Adrienne and ask flatly, “What went down?”

Adrienne brought breakfast to Kathleen every day, so he figured she had to know the scoop. But he couldn’t be entirely sure she was telling the truth.

“I just tried to give Mom her breakfast, and Samantha opened the door. I thought she’d wanna eat with us since she’s visiting. But she got real mad and splashed milk at me,” Adrienne said, her voice shaking and her eyes on the ground, but loud enough for everyone to hear.

Brennan couldn’t keep quiet, “Yeah, she’s telling the truth. I caught Samantha throwing milk at Adriel Conrad, she’s got manners, she’s a mess! We can’t let her act up just because she’s family!”

“Zip it, Brennan! Not your turn!” Conrad barked back, his temper flaring.

“No manners? Always the troublemaker, huh? I’ve been called that before. They said I brought death to the director of the orphanage, who took care of me for six years, to my grandmother, who took care of me for four years, and to my best friend, who stood by my side until I turned sixteen. What about you guys? Ever wonder what it’s like in my shoes? I didn’t want to hurt you, Brennan, you’re my brother,” Samantha said coolly, like none of this was new to her. But her teeth were clenched as she finished, “I won’t take this lying down. If you need proof, get everyone in the living room so we can all see!”

Samantha then pulled a tiny camera from the door frame. Conrad’s eyes grew wide. It was a spy cam that could see all

around. ‘Adrienne must’ve been fibbing, he figured.

Brennan started freaking out, realizing he might’ve got it all wrong.

Then, Samantha headed downstairs.

Conrad shot Brennan a look of sheer disappointment. “Brennan, if you mess up like this again, you and Adrienne are out of the Vanderbilt residence,” he said, dead serious. He followed Samantha down.

Downstairs, all the Vanderbilt family members were around the lining table. Kathleen was asking if Samantha was up yet, while Hansel rubbed her shoulders.

Hearing footsteps, Kathleen whipped around to see Samantha coming down in a wet white dress with a big red slap mark on her face. Samantha’s delicate skin made it stand out big time. “Sammie! What on earth happened? Just say who and I’ll take care of them!” Kathleen was freaking out.

Samantha’s face was all business as she walked down, Conrad right behind her and Adrienne a bit back. Brennan was in the rear, supported by some helpers. Everyone stopped and stared.

Brennan looked like he’d gone ten rounds with a heavyweight. He was wincing.

Dawson spoke up, staring at Samantha’s face. “What in the world went down here?” He was frowning, thinking about the kind of hit that would leave that kind of mark.

“We’re about to find out. Hey, Lincoln, can I use your laptop? Samantha asked, spotting the computer before she locked eyes with Lincoln, who looked just as concerned.

Lincoln wasn’t sure what Samantha was up to, but he quickly got his laptop ready and handed it to her.

Samantha took it, put it on the table, and her fingers flew over the keyboard. In no time, she had a video ready. She cranked up the volume and turned the screen so everyone could see. “Mom, before we watch this, please ask everyone to get in here, Samantha said, locking eyes with Kathleen “You wanted to know about my face? You should see the evidence for yourself. It’ll clear things up.”

Kathleen felt her heart rate pick up. That look from Samantha was new. And she had used the word ‘Mom’-that hit her deep. “Did Sammie just call me ‘Mom? Am I imagining things? she thought. Then she thought of Samantha’s last words and turned to look at Adrienne, who had her head down. Kathleen gave a little nod, and whispered to an attendant. The attendant left to summon people.

Everyone was rounded up in just a few minutes.

Samantha hit the play button.
