Chapter 46
Rhea POV "What happened, Rhea? Like how the hell did it happen?" Ray asks after I narrate everything to him. When I arrived at the hospital earlier, I was shocked to have found out that the mark on the male victims' necks had disappeared, and the injury inflicted on the female victim too. I checked the CCTV footage of the hospital immediately to see if there was someone at the hospital earlier before I came, and I saw nothing. I also asked Dave if anyone came by while he was there, but he said no one.
"I don't know. I've been trying to figure out what happened, but nothing is just coming through for me," I hit my hand on the desk slightly in frustration. After I got off work earlier, I went out to the restaurant with Raymond after we went to the hospital to see my mom.
"Wow! This is just like a movie, and I'm starting to get confused. How could someone have gone to the hospital, the station, and yet they didn't appear in the CCTV footage?" He mutters as he picks on his food, and I sigh briefly. "What do you plan to do? Whoever the perpetrator is, seems to be dangerous, so why don't you just drop the case? You don't even have the evidence again. Just give it up, and let them bury the corpse," He sighs briefly as he reclines on the chair.
"I can't. It's the first case I was going to handle after I..."
"After you got recruited, I know that. But come to think of it, don't you think this might put you and your colleagues in danger if you decide to press on with this?" He asks, and I nod my head. He's right, but a part of me wants to continue this, maybe because I just started this and want the credit, or maybe I just have a tinge of hope left in me that I'll find the person, sooner or later.
"I understand, Ray... But I'm sorry, I can't give up on this..."
"Are you kidding me, Rhea? Because it's your first, doesn't mean you will get scolded later. Do you know you could put your life at risk? Who knows, maybe the person is even stalking you and you don't know it? I told you that this whole police idea of a thing wasn't a nice one in the first place. I didn't like you going into it, but you didn't listen to me..."
"I believe I will catch the culprit..."
"Are you crazy? Do you think this is a movie where the female lead always gets what she wants in the end? Come on, this is reality, Rhea, and not those novels you do read. Wake up, and just give up while it's still early. I don't want anything to happen to you," He leans forward and utters.
"I will think about it," I mumble, and he stares at me for a few seconds, before he sighs and leans back again.
"I'm working overnight today. I should get back to work now," I say to him after I check my wristwatch for the time, and I hear him scoff.
"Are you kidding me? You've barely slept at home since the past weeks you started this. You can't sleep outside now, it's dangerous out there..."
"I have to go to work, Ray. We have to work overnight..."
"I heard when you said that, and I just said that I won't allow you to go to that station to sleep there. What if the culprit barge in there later and attack you? I can't let you leave, Rhea," He shakes his head, and I sigh briefly.
"I understand you are worried about me, but I really have to go. I promise you that I'll be safe," I plead with him, and he sighs deeply, rubbing his forehead.
"Why are you so stubborn?" He mutters, and I bite my bottom lip.
"Alright, fine. I will drop you off at the station then. I can't allow you to leave alone," He utters as he stands up to his feet.
"You don't have to, Ray... My car is here, and..."
"I insist," He cuts me off, and I nod my head. Not that I can say no, anyway.
He leads me out of the restaurant, and to his car. He drives us out of the premises of the restaurant afterward.
As he drives us to the station a few minutes later, I stare out of the window as many thoughts flood my mind. Who the hell is that person? Is he invisible? Why was he or she not caught on camera? Just who the hell is he or she? Those are the questions that keep haunting my mind.
"Are you ok?" I tilt my head to see Raymond's gaze focused on the road. He must've glanced at me earlier and found out that I was lost in thoughts.
"Yes, I'm fine," I reply to him, but I know that I can't deceive him with just that, since it's already written all over me that I'm not fine.
"You don't look like you are anyway. You don't really have to think about it, Rhea. If you can't change the situation, then don't think about it," He utters, and I nod my head.
The rest of the drive to the station was filled with silence, and we finally arrive after a few minutes.
"Take care of yourself, and don't forget to call me if anything happens, ok?" He says to me before I step out of his car, not after assuring him that I will be fine. As his only sister, I can understand how he feels now.
"Aren't you going?" I stop on my way to the building, turning back to look at him.
"I want to watch you go in first," He replies to me, and I nod my head before I proceed toward the building, and once I step in, I turn back to see him driving away.
I walk briskly toward our office, and once I walk in, I find my other colleagues, all discussing something serious.

"I guess I came late. I'm sorry everyone, my brother wouldn't let me leave, because he was worried about me," I explain to them as I slump on my seat.
"It's fine," My team leader, sergeant James replies to me.
"What did I miss?" Turning to Dave, whose seat is just next to mine, I ask him.
"I think the investigation team wants to drop the case since there's no more evidence," He releases the bombshell, and my mouth drops open in shock, and my eyes slowly narrow at the news I just heard. Is this some joke or something? "You should give up trying, Miss Smith," Sergeant James says in conclusion, and I quickly stand up to my feet.
"No, Sir. We can't do that until we find the culprit. We still need to investigate..."
"You think I also want to drop this? We don't have any choice at this point! I know you want to work hard because it's the first case you were going to handle, but we can't force things, so you just have to let go of this," He cuts me off, and I sigh deeply as I fall back to my seat.
My phone beeps immediately, and I quickly check the screen to see that it's a message from my brother.
'Let's talk tomorrow morning when you're free. It's important' I read his message, and sigh deeply. What could be so important?
