Chapter 8

Chapter Eight: Going Home with Him

Alexander’s puzzlement regarding Sebastian’s antagonism toward Isabella was evident. Ignore him. I’ll accompany you this time. If he oversteps, I’ll handle it.” Isabella pondered briefly before agreeing She realized that avoiding Sebastian wasn’t a viable long–term plan. Moreover, she was still awaiting his decision regarding the villa she had her eye on. Initially, Alexander treated her to a steak dinner at a familiar upscale restaurant, relishing the exceptional quality of the steaks despite their pricey nature. Following the meal, Alexander, with a hint of uncase in his tone, made an unconventional request. “I have to visit my family tonight. They’re eager for me to settle down and heard about the party. I might have mentioned that you’re my girlfriend. Can you just play along for tonight, if you’re available?” Isabella felt torn.

She was a mother of two and apprehensive about potential rumors should Alexander’s family discover this fact. Yet, declining her boss’s request wasn’t straightforward. Understanding her predicament, Alexander reassured her. “I’m aware of your situation, but it’s alright. I’ll take care of you. There’s no need to worry about that.” His support was genuine, acknowledging her role as a single mother. Over the past month, Isabella had developed a sense of ease working with Alexander, trusting his judgment. Thus, when he requested her company, she agreed, reassured by his assurance that there was nothing to be concerned a Alexander responded with a gentle smile. “I’ll ensure finance adds a little extra to your bonus this month.” Isabella declined his offer promptly. “That’s not necessary. Just having the opportunity to work here has been more than sufficient help. I wouldn’t want to create any resentment among the other staff.” Alexander simply nodded in understanding, though he seemed to have his own thoughts regarding the bonus.

Later, at a café, they awaited Sebastian to collect the ring, but instead, Lorraine arrived. She appeared. petite and unusually youthful, almost resembling a college freshman, making Isabella feel like a more mature presence by comparison. Witnessing such an innocent young woman possibly being misled by a dishonest man saddened Isabella. Lorraine, pleasant and unassuming, admired the ring. “It’s truly beautiful. Can I reach out to you again if I need something similar?” Isabella readily agreed, “of course, feel free to contact me whenever you need.” Lorraine’s joy was contagious as she openly expressed her delight. Playing her role, Isabella delicately slid the ring onto Lorraine’s finger. The design and diamond perfectly complemented Lorraine’s style, accentuating her innate charm.

As Lorraine basked in the sunlight, admiring the ring, she shared a personal detail. “This is the third ring Sebastian has given me. Every anniversary for the past three years, he’s presented me with one. I believe I’ve found a genuinely good man.”

Isabella experienced a mix of emotions. She had once been in Lorraine’s position, believing in a man’s goodness and love. She managed a polite smile. “He’s truly considerate. It’s quite rare to find men who remember anniversaries in such detail, you’re so lucky.” Lorraine, radiant with joy, continued to share her love story, resembling a young girl in the early stages of romance. As she spoke, Isabella pieced together the timeline of their relationship. Her suspicions solidified; Lorraine and Sebastian’s relationship had begun before Isabella’s divorce had been finalized. Though Isabella listened and replied, her mind wandered, “You do seem genuinely happy.”

The afternoon was spent listening to Lorraine’s effusive praise of Sebastian’s affection. Isabella

observed Lorraine, lost in her romantic world, feeling a pull to caution her. To tell her the sad truth about her husband. However, she hesitated, considering the possibility that Sebastian’s affection might indeed be authentic. Alexander, who was also present, listened calmly, displaying no signs of irritation. Upon Sebastian’s arrival to collect Lorraine, his gaze towards Isabella was sharp and cautionary, seemingly warning her to keep silent and mute. Internally, Isabella couldn’t help but roll her eyes, questioning Lorraine’s attraction to him but then she also fell for him once. As Alexander appeared ready to intervene and confront Sebastian, Isabella held him back. “Meeting people we dislike is a part of life. You can’t react like this every time on my behalf. Sometimes we need to exercise patience.”

“I promised to protect you,” Alexander said, a hint of concern in his voice. Isabella shook her head. No need to worry about him.” “I just don’t want you to get hurt.” Isabella felt a sense of warmth. ” I’ve dealt with many like him. I’ll be fine.” Alexander, looking somewhat regretful, checked his watch. “Time to head back. I’ll take you home.”

A rush of emotions flooded Isabella. It had been so long since someone offered to take her home. “I suppose I should get ready.” “No need.” Alexander opened the car door for her. I’ve got everything set. Just come with me.” Isabella nodded and joined Alexander in the car, heading to his parents‘ house. During the drive, As Isabella dialed Miles’s number, her heart ached slightly knowing she wouldn’t be home for dinner. “I won’t be back in time, but I’ll see you soon,” she assured. Miles’s voice on the other end was understanding. However, the disappointment in Amelia’s eyes was tangible; she fought to hold back tears. Miles hurried to comfort her, offering reassurance. Isabella knew how much Amelia missed her; it tugged at her heartstrings. Fortunately, Lina Catherine, their trusted nanny, was there to look after the kids. Lina was exceptional at her job and knew how to keep them comfortable and occupied in her absence.

Alexander kept the conversation lively to entertain Isabella. Upon reaching Alexander’s parents‘ house, Isabella was surprised to find Sebastian and Lorraine there as well. She discovered from Alexander’s mother that they had invited Sebastian and his wife. Alexander’s parents, thrilled about Alexander bringing his girlfriend over, thought it would be enjoyable to invite another young couple to liven up the gathering and avoid any awkwardness. However, this led to an unexpected and awkward encounter for Isabella with Sebastian. As soon as Lorraine saw Isabella, she greeted her warmly. “I had no idea you were Alexander’s girlfriend. That’s such a coincidence! No wonder your were with him at that dinner. Why didn’t you tell us sooner?” Isabella offered a small, forced smile.” We planned to tell you later. I didn’t expect to bump into you here today.” Lorraine took Isabella’s hand and introduced her to Matilda “Isabella is the new designer at Alexander’s company. She designed this ring I’m wearing.” Lorraine proudly displayed the ring to Matilda. Matilda admired the ring. “You can really see the care and effort in this ring. Alexander always said you were super talented, you always do a good job, and he’s definitely right.” “You’re too generous, Mrs. Thompson. I’m not as amazing as they make me out to be.” Isabella humbly replied.

Sebastian stood nearby, clearly upset. He hadn’t anticipated Alexander bringing Isabella to his home. “Are you actually serious this time, Alexander?” His tone carried sarcasm. “I’m always serious about relationships. Do you think I’m like you? I don’t play with people’s emotions.” “But my divorce wasn’t entirely my fault. Dear uncle, it takes two to tango.”
