Chapter 8 Unexpected Proposition

“It’s fine, really. He’ll bear a scar on his leg, but it’s the least I can do. I have matters to attend to, so I won’t impose on your time any longer.” With that, I made my exit. I knew their days were numbered; Henry would arrive in two weeks and Violet would inevitably elope with him. Harper’s time with Violet was running out. The more I pondered it, the more loathed Henry. I instructed Lewis to drive me to Henry’s villa as soon as we left the hospital. I had left some medicine there that I had intended to prepare at my mother’s house. I was confident it would help me gain weight quickly. The medicine untouched, still in the living room. It appeared Henry hadn’t come home last night, and I was left wondering how his meeting had gone.

“Why didn’t you leave your car last night?” Henry’s voice echoed from the stairway before I could make my exit. He looked livid. His unexpected presence startled me; he was supposed to be home only once every three months. Despite his baggy attire, he looked more appealing than ever.

I’ve never meddled in your affairs, and I have no intention of starting now, I retorted.

“Is that so? Then why have all my past flings ended up with their careers or lives in ruins? Are you suggesting that’s all just a series of unfortunate coincidences? Henry challenged.

So he knew everything. Yet, he did nothing to stop me. It’s clear he never truly cared about those women. Except for Violet, of course. He would annihilate me if I so much as spoke to her

I confessed, “Yes, you spent a fortune on them. I merely wanted to reclaim a portion of my money. After all, we’re a married couple; what’s yours is mine, right?”

“Why didn’t you claim your share yesterday? I gave her a house, which essentially means you own half of her property, right?” Henry interrogated.

His question left me perplexed. Was this the same man? He was joking with me. I knew he would file for divorce in a year and leave me with a fortune that would secure my future. A house meant nothing

to me.

Tve had a change of heart. Besides, she’s not the first, nor will she be the last. I can’t battle them all.” With that, I left. I should have asked Lewis to retrieve the medicine for me. As soon as I stepped out of his house, I could no longer sense his presence. I instructed Lewis to leave and handed the medicine to my maid upon returning home. I noticed my mother was cooking; she was the best cook in the world. My father had just returned home. Upon seeing me, he handed me his phone, “Take a look at this.”

The headline read, “Local celebrity spotted leaving hotel with Mr. Henry. They deny romantic involvement.” I knew their relationship was nothing more than an affair. I handed back my father’s phone, “It’s fake news, dad. He’s a businessman; he has to maintain appearances.”

“I can’t believe you’re defending him!” My father exclaimed.

I wasn’t defending Henry; I was merely trying to prevent my father from getting overly agitated. So, I suggested, “Well then, you should give him a piece of your mind. Don’t worry, I’ll back you up.” He chuckled at my comment, “You have a twisted sense of humor, sweetheart.”

I massaged his arm, “Please don’t be upset, dad. Think about how much money Henry will have to spend to cover this up. Doesn’t that make you feel better?”

“You have a point. Henry has donated a substantial amount to several schools. At least he has some semblance of a conscience.” My father quickly shifted his focus to Henry’s philanthropic deeds.

“Exactly,” I agreed.

My mother finished cooking shortly after, preparing all my favorite dishes. She was truly the best. Despite the comforting meal, my father had to return to work, leaving me alone with my mother.

My mother invited some friends over for a card game while I scrolled through my phone, reading about Vera’s scandal. Vera insisted she and Henry were just friends, and their hotel meeting was to discuss an upcoming movie role, with Henry as an investor. It seemed Henry would be spending more money to handle this scandal. He was always generous when it came to damage control. I dozed off on the couch, only to be jolted awake by a call from Lilly Without answering. I knew she was inviting me out for drinks.

“Come join us. Ramona! There are some real lookers here!” Lilly enthused.

“How attractive are we talking?” I queried.

“You have no idea. Just get here! Sammy’s already here, but Elly’s tied up with work and can’t make it,” Lilly responded.

Ever since I shared my plans to divorce Henry, my friends had been inviting me out more frequently. I knew they were concerned about me and their support was a welcome distraction. I didn’t want to dwell on my past. So, I replied, “I’ll be there shortly. Lilly sent me her location as soon as the call ended. My night out began half an hour later.

Lilly was a regular at every bar in the city. She knew which ones served the best alcohol and had the most attractive patrons. I had to give it to Lilly; the men in the bar were indeed handsome. After a few too many drinks, I suddenly threw up. I was mortified to be so inebriated in front of such attractive men. Yet, Henry still seemed more appealing. “Excuse me, I need to use the restroom.” I towards the restroom, accepting the assistance of a man who offered to help. I wanted to experience

staggered what it felt like to be cared for by someone else. After emptying my stomach in the restroom, I noticed the man waiting for me. He asked, “Can I get your number?”

“Why?” I queried.

“We can keep in touch. You can consider me a booty call when you’re feeling lonely.”
