Chapter 7 A Fortuitous Encounter

“Oh dear, what has upset you, my child? Henry must have done something wrong. Tomorrow, I’ll contact the Pattersons and demand an explanation. How dare they upset my daughter… My mother was taken aback and quickly sat on the bed, cradling the in her arms.

“Mom, Hen… Henry didn’t upset me. It was my own misunderstanding. You’ve been so kind to me…” I clung to my mother’s waist, my words choked with emotion.

Indeed, Henry hadn’t upset me. I had misunderstood everything, driven by my own misguided

obsession.

My mother gently patted my back and sighed. As her only daughter, she understood me best. How could she not know my grievances with Henry?

I never allowed myself to cry or feel sorry for myself. That would never lead to anything positive.

“Do you still want to eat the sticky rice chicken?” she asked me.

“Yes, I’ve been craving it so much…” I wiped away my tears, rose from the bed, and took my mother’s hand as we walked downstairs to eat the sticky rice chicken.

My dad was probably asleep. It was just the two of us sitting in the dining room, chatting. The aroma of the sticky rice chicken filled the air. I devoured most of it in one go. Over the years, I had eaten so little, but suddenly, I indulged myself. My stomach swelled instantly, almost to the point of vomiting.

My mother patted my back. “Why did you eat so much? You won’t be able to sleep with a bloated stomach.”

“I was too hungry.” I chuckled foolishly. The last time I enjoyed a meal this much was at my graduation. when Lilly and I had a celebratory dinner. After graduation, I married Henry and embarked on a life of

resentment.

“Even when you’re hungry, you should cat slowly and stop when you’re 80% full.” My mother spoke softly and gently.

I leaned on her arm, acting spoiled. “Mom, can you sleep with me tonight and tell me about staying healthy secrets?”

Without a second thought, my mother agreed.

The next morning, I felt an unprecedented sense of relief. I had eaten well and slept soundly. After breakfast at home, I headed to the hospital..

Harper was playing with his phone. His leg didn’t suffer any bone injuries, but the flesh wound was quite severe. If required stitches and was wrapped in thick gauze, immobilizing him.

“Sister, why are you here?” Harper looked surprised and embarrassed. “You don’t have to worry about me too much or visit me often.”

I couldn’t accept that. I smiled warmly, turned my head, and instructed Lewis, Lewis, bring them in.”

Lewis carried a bunch of nutritional supplements and placed them next to Harper’s bed.

Seeing the grand gesture I made, Harper was clearly taken aback, and a hint of embarrassment appeared on his face. “Sister, it’s just a minor skin injury. It’s not that serious.”

“Every part of the body is important. Even a skin injury matters.” I sat down by the bedside, smiling softly.

“Oh, by the way, Sister, I still don’t know your name. Harper suddenly asked.

“My surname is Xander. You can call me Ms. Xander if you want.” I answered calmly, not feeling old at all. After all, I was six years older than Harper.

Harper nodded, “Okay, Ms. Xander.”

I chatted with Harper in the ward, as college students always think simple and naive. Harper was currently in his third year, majoring in civil engineering. During the summer vacation, he was a diligent and hardworking student, working part–time to support his studies.

As he talked about the future, he also mentioned his lovely and beautiful girlfriend. His dream was to graduate and secure a stable job, then marry the girl he loved

I chuckled, somewhat impolitely, and quickly stopped myself.

Harper hesitated and asked me, “Ms. Xander, what are you laughing at?”

I lightly rubbed the tip of my nose and replied gently Nothing, just… seeing you reminds me of my college days, a time when I had such beautiful aspirations.”

university did Ms. Xander graduate from?” Harper asked curiously.

I glanced at him deeply and answered, “Amurica University.”

Speaking of it, Henry, Violet, Harper, and I could be considered alumni from the same university.

Harper exclaimed with delight, “Ms. Xander, we attended the same university! You’re my senior!”

I feigned happiness and replied, “Yes, what a coincidence, right?”

Amurica had several universities, and Amurica University was one of the top three in the country. Anyone who entered this university had an excellent mind, regardless of their family background, Graduating from there meant a bright future, not necessarily extravagant wealth but a comfortable life.

If Violet hadn’t met Henry. Harper’s dream would have come true.

So. Harper and I continued to chat about Amurica University. He was talkative, and I held my own in the conversation. While we were engrossed in our lively discussion, someone walked in and said with a clear and pleasant voice, “Harper, I’ve come to see you!”

Upon hearing those words, I heard the same ringtone Henry had on his exclusive cellphone in his previous life.

I turned my head and saw Violet, wearing a pure white chiffon dress. Her jet–black hair was loose, with natural curls at the ends, adding a touch of femininity to her innocence, making her charming and

beautiful.

I wasn’t jealous of her physical beauty. However, at twenty, the youthful vitality radiating from her young body made me feel a twinge of sourness in my heart.

When I was twenty, I had been secretly in love with Henry for three years. I spent my finest years consumed by that deadly unrequited love.

Why did Violet, at the same age, receive Henry’s passionate love while I hid in my diary?

“Violet!” Harper’s face lit up with joy upon seeing her, but immediately a hint of guilt appeared. “Ah, if I had known you were coming, I wouldn’t have told you and made you worry.”

Violet approached, carrying a bag of bought fruits gracefully like a little swan. “Silly, how could you not tell me you’re injured?”

I stood up and offered the only chair to Violet.

I remained calm because next, I would have to give Henry to her.

“Ramona, it’s you!” Violet suddenly recognized me, surprised. “What are you doing here?”

Because I knocked into your beloved boyfriend.

I awkwardly smiled, “Sorry, I accidentally bumped into Harper. I came today to see how he’s doing.”

Violer looked at me, then at Harper, and didn’t blame me or Harper. Instead, she smiled and said, “What a coincidence, Harper, this lady has been coming to our coffee shop frequently. She’s really nice, she probably accidentally bumped into you.”

Her understanding left me speechless. For anyone else, it might not have been intentional, but it wasn’t the same for me. I had carefully chosen the moment to bump into him.

“I know, Ms. Xander didn’t do it on purpose, and she even paid me extra money. I feel bad about it,” Harper scratched his head, feeling embarrassed.

“No, that won’t do. Just paying what needs to be paid is enough,” Violet immediately took out her phone. “Ms. Xander, could you provide a payment QR code? I’ll refund the extra money to you.”

Perhaps it was this nonchalant attitude towards money that attracted Henry?

A girl who had no hint of gold digger, her eyes were full of clarity.

I was amazed. Every time, she made me feel unworthy in my designer clothes.
