Chapter 15 An Unexpected Visit From The In–laws.

Elly looked at me in surprise, “What? You want to join us?”

“Of course, I would seize the opportunity to join you when it presents itself. What else can I do?”

The idea of building my family’s business from scratch had crossed my mind, but it wasn’t where my passion truly lay. My parents are still in good health, and they don’t need my assistance. I yearn to revisit my dreams.

Elly exclaimed, “I’ve been meaning to bring this up. You were once the musical goddess back in university. It’s a shame that you’ve become a stay–at–home housewife. Don’t worry, I’ll definitely recommend you to the organizer if there’s any elegant music concert or something similar!”

I clasped my hands together and said, “Okay, thank you. I’m covering the bill tonight. Don’t hold back!”

After finishing our drinks, I parted ways with my friends and headed home. I called Lewis and asked him to pick me up. As soon as I hung up, a familiar voice called out to me, “Ramona?”

To my surprise, it was Harper.

“Harper, what are you doing here?” I asked.

“I just finished my part–time job nearby. Ramona, have you been drinking?” Harper asked, noticing the smell of alcohol on me.

I covered my forehead, feeling slightly uncomfortable. The effects of the alcohol were kicking in, and I was finding it hard to think straight. I asked, “Harper, can you drive?”

“Yes, I can. I can drive if it’s inconvenient for you, Harper offered.

What a considerate kid! I tossed the car keys at him before calling Lewis and telling him not to come.

“Ramona, this….is your car?”

Harper’s eyes widened in surprise and envy as he looked at the black Panamera.

Men, regardless of their age, have a lifelong fascination with automobiles.

My mind was a blur, and I responded, “Yeah, it’s my car. Use the navigation to take me to Maple Estate.”

“Maple Estate?”

Harper was taken aback once again. He was probably aware of the notoriously high property prices in

the area.

“What are you standing there for? I’m feeling dizzy.”

I leaned in closer and rested against Harper’s shoulder, noticing that he seemed to be in a daze. This seemingly innocent act after drinking was the simplest way to create flirtatious vibes.

When Harper realized we were too close, he quickly came to his senses. He helped me while blushing

and cautioned, “Ramona, watch your step or you might fall.”

Harper and Violet shared a similar trait; neither of them was easily swayed by money. This young man remained composed despite knowing he had met a wealthy woman.

“Harper, you’re so considerate,” I chuckled while pretending to be drunk.

“I bet your girlfriend is very lucky, isn’t she? As for me, I’ve had a failed marriage, and aside from having some money. I’m not doing well in anything else. Look at that! This is the most ordinary car I own. If you like, I can give it to you!”

I felt incredibly balanced inside because I realized that if Henry could give other women houses and cars, I could do the same.

“No, no, no, Ramona, you’re drunk,”

Harper quickly shook his head and helped me into the car, saying. Tll take you home.”

He drove very carefully and slowly, probably worried about accidentally scratching the car and not having the money to pay for repairs.

I pretended to sleep in the passenger seat, occasionally opening my eyes to see where we were.

“We’re at Maple Estate, which house is yours?” Harper asked after a while.

“No. A08, I answered with my eyes closed,

Eventually, Harper drove me home after entering the building number into the navigation.

After he parked the car, I pulled a stack of cash out of my wallet and gave it to Harper, saying, “Take it, it’s for your trouble and as a tip.”

Harper was taken aback, but he quickly returned the money to me. He said, “You don’t have to pay me, Ramona. I was just helping you out, not doing it for profit.”

“Take it, please. You’ll have trouble finding a cab at this hour. Drive this car home, and I’ll with you tomorrow to arrange for my driver to pick it up.”

I got out of the car without waiting for Harper’s response and went inside.

As soon as I got home, I asked Amber to make some tea to help me sober up.

Amber quickly went into the kitchen and started working. She showed no signs of resentment.

Henry would be attending a business conference in a few days. As he was getting closer to meeting the love of his life, I was getting closer to my freedom.

Soon after I heard a car engine turning off outside, Henry appeared in front of me.

He cast a quick glance at me as I lay on the couch in the living room, then sat down on the other side. Henry was no better than me; he also smelled of alcohol.

I sat up and gave Henry a radiant smile, saying, “You’ve been drinking too, haven’t you? Here, you can have this. Mrs. Velma, please pour pe another cup of tea.

Following a quick nod, Amber returned to the kitchen.

Tm fine. Henry merely said, without even touching the cup.

I was gloating. This was the hangover tea that his future mother–in–law had made. He would have to put up with Amber ignoring him in the future to pursue Violet.

He thought he was ignoring the housemaid today, but she would become his future mother–in–law, and she would make his life difficult in the future.

Amber brought out another cup of hangover tea.

I said to Henry, “I woke her up to make this, it would be a shame if you didn’t have a sip after all her hard work.”

Amber quickly replied, “Mr. and Mrs. Patterson, it’s my duty, it’s nothing hard.”

“Mrs. Velma, he’s uncultured and has a bad temper. Don’t mind him,” I said softly, denigrating Henry in front of her.

He is deeply in love with Violet, isn’t he? I would make his life more difficult in the future.

Amber was flustered, and she said, “No, no, no, Mrs. Patterson, you are flattering me!”

“All right, Mrs. Velma, you can go to bed now,” I said, waving my hand.

I drank half a cup of the hangover tea after Amber had left before ascending to the second floor and taking a bath. As usual, Henry retired to the guest room to sleep.

When I came out of the bathroom, I found Henry in his pajamas sitting on the bed in the master bedroom.

I frowned and asked, “What are you doing in

my room?”

Henry looked equally annoyed, he explained, “My parents are here. They’re staying in the guest room tonight.”

I was taken aback and confused. My in–laws had wanted us to have a child in the past, but they never kept an eye on us at the Maple Estate. What brought them here today?

“So abruptly?” I was taken aback.

Henry laughed, asking, “Abruptly? Do you have no idea what you told Noah?“

So, Henry showed up tonight to handle this surprise inspection.

I swear. I never imagined Noah was going to complain to my in–laws, and that’s what brought them over. This butterfly effect is the worst!

I didn’t want to take the blame, so I told him, “I didn’t say anything to him. I merely asked him to convince you to file for divorce. I didn’t know he would tell your parents about it.”

“How long are you going to play this game?” Henry’s tone was stern, and he was clearly irritated.

I said nothing, but I opened the drawer and pulled out a divorce agreement I had previously drafted. I had signed it. I only wanted a divorce; I didn’t want any of Henry’s property.

I handed the agreement to Henry and applied a face mask. I challenged him, “You’ll know if I’m playing hard to get once you sign it.”

The atmosphere turned tense. I could see Henry’s demeanor darkening through the reflection of the vanity mirror.

There was a knock on the door just as he was about to tear the paper up.
