TO HAVE AND TO HATE

CHAPTER 12

Nico and I didn’t get to talk like I initially wanted us to because he had other plans. We ended up having sex at the back of his car twice. I have never had sex in public, it was both exciting and terrifying, the thought of being caught just made it even more enjoyable. Nico has just dropped me off and I am standing in front of the door at the house. I told Tessa I would only be out for a few minutes but this is over two hours later, D’s car is in the driveway indicating that he is home already.

I don’t even know what I will tell him. I had plans of making up with him tonight but Nico happened and now we are back to square one. He keeps making me lose my mind, when I am with him nothing else matters.

I finally find the courage to walk into the house. D is sitting in front of the Television, watching a soccer match.

‘Hi,’ I say, sitting on the couch across from him. I can hardly look him in the eyes because I feel he will tell that I just had sex with someone else plus I feel I can still smell the sex on me so I need to quickly leave this place and freshen up.

‘Hi,’ he says without even looking at me.

‘What time did you get home?’

‘I have been around for some time, where are you coming from and why are you dressed like that?’

‘Dressed like what?’

‘That dress?’

I shrug, ‘I had to run some errands.’

‘And you left your car home? Who dropped you off?’

‘I got on a cab I didn’t feel like driving.’

‘I see.’

‘Where is Tessa?’

‘She went to sleep. She kept waiting for you to show up so we could eat as a family.’

‘Oh my, I thought I would be out for only a few minutes but I…,’

‘Lost track of time?’

‘That’s not what I wanted to say.’

‘You seem to be losing track of your time a lot these days. Why is your phone off?’

‘Battery low.’

‘Okay.’

‘I will just freshen up then wake Tessa up so we can eat together.’

‘I am not hungry.’

‘D..,’

‘I am trying to watch a game here Penelope, I would appreciate it if you keep quiet.’

‘Penelope?’ He hasn’t called me by my name in like forever, I am always ‘love’ ‘Babe’ or ‘Bana T’

I decide to leave him. I guess I will have to wait until he is in a better mood for us to talk.

I head up to our room and freshen up before I walk to Tessa’s. Her light is off so I turn it on. She is lying on her stomach and seems to be fast asleep. I walk further into the room and cover her up. She hates being woken up when she sleeps. I plug her phone into the charger and leave her room. Then I head into the kitchen and pack all the food she cooked in the fridge, making a mental note to wake up early and heat everything up in the morning.

D and I rarely fight, this distance I have created between us feels strange. I hope we can sort things out and get back to how it used to be, I need to be careful. Nico promised he will not send me flowers or presents at home and he won’t blow up my phone like he did earlier today. He also said he will keep what we have to himself. I don’t know why but I feel like I can trust him. In another life, I hope he is older than me and I hope I meet him earlier than D so I can get to experience all the fun before ending up with D.

‘See what the cat dragged in,’ Gabby says when I walk into the bedroom after my adventure with Penelope. This is when I am coming back home since I left earlier today to meet up with my mother. I didn’t pick up any of Gabby’s calls nor did I respond to her messages. I know she must be angry; I actually didn’t expect to find her here.

‘You know I went to see my mother, what is all this?’

‘You have been at your mother’s house the whole day? Why don’t I believe you?’

‘She wanted me to help her out with something. You want me to give you her number so you can call and ask.’

‘It hasn’t come to that. I was just worried that you weren’t picking my calls.’

‘I was busy running errands for my mother, I didn’t even make it to class today.’

‘Okay, I believe you babe. I cooked; you freshen up so I can warm up your food.’

‘You shouldn’t be doing all these things, you are not my wife.’

‘But I am your girlfriend and one day I will be your wife,’ she smiles.

‘Oh.’

‘Yeah baby.’

‘How is your friend?’

‘Tessa? She is fine but she is mad at me. I was supposed to pick her for class but I didn’t.’

‘Why are you the one picking her up for class?’

‘She is my best friend and she doesn’t have a car yet.’

‘Why doesn’t she have a car? Aren’t her folks rich?’

‘They are but they don’t approve of her driving until she is eighteen.’

‘Okay. Did you tell her that Leon likes her?’

‘No.’

‘Why?’

‘I don’t trust Leon. Tessa needs a proper man. A gentleman.’

‘Leon is the perfect gentleman.’

‘You think so?’

‘Yeah. You know what, I think we should all go on a date, you me, Leon and Tessa. More like a double date.’

‘Really?’

‘Yeah.’

‘Sounds exciting, I need to talk to T about it and if she agrees then we are game.’

‘Bills on me.’

‘You are the best.’

‘I know.’

‘Oh please,’ she rolls her eyes, ‘go and bathe, food will be ready soon.’

‘Alright baby.’
