The Tyrant's Trophy

Chapter I need a drink

Abijah

After Chad walked out, we all remained quiet - too stunned to know what to say. Quinn and I kept our focus on Adam. In all honesty, I was surprised he didn’t do worse to Chad. It was a little disappointing, actually.

Turning to Quinn, Adam broke the silence. “How could you let this happen?” He quickly pointed his finger at the doctor.

“Excuse me?!” Chad’s sister was nothing like him. She had the worst poker face when it came to being yelled at and accused. “HOW IS THIS MY FAULT?!”

“You’re his sister and you’re treating Maybell. You had to have noticed something. You should have informed me immediately!”

“Excuse you?” Quinn bit back. “Keep this in mind, CARTER. I DON’T work for YOU. You are not paying me a dime for my help.”

I could have intervened and brought the two to a middle ground but honestly, there was no middle ground for any of us to land our feet on. Chad was in love with Maybell: He WANTS Maybell.

How the heck are we SUPPOSED to be comfortable with that?! What if Chad does something to her or worse: they both end up dead?

“It’s not my fault that Chad couldn’t help falling in love.” But it will be his fault if it gets in the way of Maybell’s well-being.

Adam scoffed, “he should’ve controlled his emotions; that’s what he’s trained to do! None of my employees are to develop feelings for our clients.”

“I agree,” God, I never thought I would hear myself say those things regarding Adam. “This is unethical and not to mention, how will Maybell feel if she catches on to this? She’s barely getting readjusted to the world and freedom. Do you honestly think she’ll want to be in another relationship after Phil?”

Quinn didn’t sway. “Chad falling in love with Maybell is very unprofessional. However, that makes him the best person to guard Maybell.”

“No, it makes him the worst person to guard Maybell. His feelings can cloud his judgment.” Adam’s retort should have won the argument but Quinn was tougher than I thought.

“Do your feelings for your wife cloud your judgment?” Her query caught him off guard. “You love your wife; I’ve seen that up close. Does your love for her make you unfit to protect her?”

Adam was silent. I wasn’t sure exactly what he and his wife had to go through together, but I’m sure he was always protective of her. That or maybe possessive?

Quinn raised a brow in triumph. “Exactly! You’d do anything to protect her, and I’m sure you’ll be the same way with your daughter.”

That rocked my world.

Adam’s going to be a father?

“Chad will be the exact same way with Maybell. Besides, as he said, who else has the training he has?”

Adam let out a sigh and looked at all the documents that lay on the table. “I think we’ve gone over everything we need to. Quinn, finish your research, and then Mrs. Sweetheart can file for a divorce. Abijah, find out whatever else information you were looking for, so we can destroy this piece of crap’s career.”

“Language, Adam,” It slipped out of my mouth. I was still reeling from the revelation that Adam Carter would be a father. So naturally, I mentally shut down for a bit.

Adam shook his head. “You beat your fiance, and you’re gonna lecture me about my word choice?”

Quinn didn’t bother waiting to be dismissed. Her phone went off and she was out the door like the flash. “See ya, guys.”

“I need a drink.” Adam and I said at the same time.
