Chapter 25
Chapter 25 Forced to Marry Someone
Elizabeth lost her appetite that night. What was supposed to be a delicious feast now tasted like nothing. She dreaded for it to be over.
Once they were done with dinner, Elizabeth immediately followed Liam as he returned to his study on the second floor.
Gwyneth also happened to go upstairs for some rest. She could not help but be amused by Elizabeth’s protesting–like gaze. “What is going on in that woman’s mind?‘ she thought.
Liam sat at the desk in the study. He looked at Elizabeth, and his eyes were slightly dazed. Since the day he learned that her wound was a scald, he started to act cold toward her.
“Liam, you said you’d let me work in your company. What exactly is my role there?”
Liam froze when he heard that. He had agreed to this then because he wanted Gwyneth to go home with him quickly. But, now that he thought about it, he realized he had made an abrupt decision.
“Report to HR tomorrow and take a secretary position for the time being.”
Elizabeth was elated. ‘Becoming a secretary means that I can see Liam every day.”
“Okay. It’s getting really late-”
“Yeah. I’ll ask my driver to drive you home,” said Liam.
It was clear that Elizabeth wanted to stay the night, but Liam did not understand the implication or pretended not to understand it.
Seeing Liam calling his personal assistant in, Elizabeth felt blue, and her face turned pale. However, she did not say anything more.
Elizabeth went to Luther Corporation the next day and reported to the Human Resources Department. Soon, news from the department quickly spread to the entire office.
“I’m not surprised by people relying on their connections with someone to get a job, but this is the first time in history that I’ve witnessed someone get a job as a secretary.”
“I heard from the Human Resources Department that the girl was led in by the boss’s personal assistant when she reported in for duty.”
“The boss’s personal assistant? So you’re saying that Mr. Luther brought her in?”
Several of the workers in the company were busy gossiping when they suddenly heard footsteps behind them. They stopped talking immediately. When they turned their heads, they saw Elizabeth walking out of the CEO’s office.
Elizabeth saw them staring and gave them a nod as a greeting. However, when she nodded, her necklace fell out. Initially, no one paid much attention to her, but Elizabeth suddenly chuckled in embarrassment, “Excuse me, we’re allowed to wear jewelry to work here, right? It’s a gift from Mr. Luther. It wouldn’t seem right if I didn’t wear it.”
Hearing this, the crowd looked at each other and nodded vigorously. When Elizabeth left, the people burst into discussion.
“Isn’t Mr. Luther already married? He obviously doesn’t have a normal relationship with the new secretary.”
“The boss has been married for so many years, yet we’ve never seen Mrs. Luther at the company before.”
“Maybe it’s because his family forced him to marry someone he didn’t like.”
“Yes! That must be it! Maybe the boss wants a divorce, but that woman asked for some of his property, so he decided not to get divorced!”
This was the power of gossip in the workplace. One speculation from the necklace, and everyone was talking about it.
Meanwhile, Gwyneth, who was at AMC Group headquarters, had no idea that the people in Luther Corporation had created a bad
reputation for her–a despicable woman who was greedy and refused lo divorce.
Wesley knocked on the door and walked into Gwyneth’s office while holding a piece of paper. “Boss, this document has been processed by our senior management tearn, but it was sent back to us. I think you have to take a look at it.”
Gwyneth was taken aback when she heard what Wesley had said. ‘It’s been long since I showed up at the company, yet something
happened during my visit.‘ Then, with a helpless sigh, she took the lile Wesley handed over.
“And I thought there was nothing you couldn’t do,” she said, only to see Wesley chuckle awkwardly and smile.
*There’s a reason you’re the boss,” he replied. Gwyneth could not help but smile wryly at the flattery. She shook her head and opened the folder. When she saw the name on the header, her gaze darkened.
[Luther Corporation]
Gwyneth did not expect that this unsolvable matter was related to her nominal husband. As she looked further into the document, a cold smile slowly emerged on the corner of her lips.
“Boss, this project has been on hold for a quarter of the year. If this continues, I’m afraid it will affect the progress of our upcoming projects.”
Wesley took two steps forward and hesitated for a while before he continued, “Since Luther Corporation is involved, why don’t you-”
“No.” Gwyneth understood why Wesley would suggest such a thing, but she saw it as a small matter. ‘There’s no need to bother Liam over this,‘ she thought. In other words, Gwyneth did not want to ask Liam for help yet because she wanted to put some distance between them. She got up, grabbed the file, picked up her coat and purse, and strode out of the office.
“Boss, I don’t think it’s necessary for you to pay Luther Corporation a visit.”
“If you have a better idea, I’m all ears.”
