Chapter 66 Jokes On You
“Exactly why I will be going now.” Before he can move any closer, my hands rip through my chest plate driving the arrow tips straight through my hearts, piercing my back. I feel so cold. My breathing hiccups until I am enveloped into darkness.
Tristan’s POV
I stand there in shock; she shoves the arrows straight through. I watch as her last breaths come out in short bursts and my mind is racing, I did the only thing I could think of as her last beat almost finishes. I threw out a stasis spell freezing her in the last seconds of her life. As my men went to lift her they are jolted by an unseen force, turning to ash.
Testing my theory, throwing a rock at her body and it did as my two men becoming dust. “Don’t touch her!” I snap my fingers at the high priests, watching them chant from four points away from her. “Sire, there is a force field emanating from her gauntlet. The energy it is putting off is stronger than anything we can bypass. I suggest we transport her as is and work on breaking it away from her. The others will surely come back soon the gather her body.”
What other choice did I have, nodding my head to them. They levitate her through the portal. Evelyn’s tortured voice calls out to me, “You can’t leave me here, Tristan. I’ve done everything you’ve asked.”
“That you have and you are of no further use to me or my father. Besides, you’ll be dead soon. Elaina has marked you with Persea, you know as well as I it is inevitable.” I step through the portal leaving her to her fate.
Aftermath
Yana and I are tossed out by Elaina, landing back at the command center. Going back is my plan, the only plan. I wasn’t going to leave her there to die, no matter what she said. Laina is my life and I refuse to live without her. I scrabble to my feet attempting to orb back, not noticing Yana has not shift back. She pins me down with her Talon’s as I thrash angrily, without knowing it; I sent jolts of energy out, knocking Yana back as well as everyone else in the command center.
I am stunned at what I just did, it becomes all too clear how Elaina felt. The fear of what you are and how easily you could kill someone unintentionally. Yana shakes it off and screeches at me very pissed off. That’s when I felt it, the cold crept over me and I couldn’t breathe. I writhe on the floor in utter pain and it just stops. This empty feeling overtakes me, the bond all but erased.
It isn’t only me that felt it, their faces are painted with despair and pain. Just as I got to my feet I orb back to the location to see her body passing through a closing portal. I race to it in vain. I am not alone; her legion is behind me with her family. My mother walks over to me, embracing me and I stiffen. “I’m so sorry. We will get her body back.”
Pulling away from my mother and it is as if I didn’t recognize her. How could she talk as if Elaina is gone, Elaina isn’t gone! I would have felt if she was, the bond would be completely gone. “How dare you! She isn’t dead. None of you know that. None of you feel what I feel!”
My mother reaches for me and I recoil from her. “Don’t touch me! Stay the fuck away from me!” Titus came between us.
“Nolan, son you have to accept…”
“I don’t have to accept shit, she isn’t dead! You out of anyone should realize that!”
My head is reeling, how can her father out of everyone not feel the faint tether to Elaina that is still present. I couldn’t stay here with them all trying to convince me she is dead. “Someone, help me!” Evelyn! That cunt is still alive! I stalk towards the direction of her voice. I grab her out of the debris by her neck.
Bryant’s POV
Nolan is right, I still felt my sister although it is faint, but I can still feel her. He stalks over to Evelyn snatching her from under the rubble. His hand closes tightly around her throat as I willed my feet to move, “Don’t, we need her alive along with Ashton. Our Aunt Brigitte and her coven can extract as much information as they can get from those two. It’s not over, Nolan. We will get Elaina back.”.
Nolan let Evelyn go, dropping her to the ground. She coughs gasping for air, the slashes to her face are turning grey and one of her eyes is clouded over. No doubt my sister gave her those and I suspect she used Persea ash to slowly kill her. Lex and Lennox grab her, dragging her by the arms as she tries to put up a fight. Our mother is silent as tears cascade down her cheeks. Siren’s echo in the distance, “We need to leave before the humans show up.”
We are back at the command center; Aunt Brie is on the phone with her coven. Ashton is sporting a new black eye and cuts to his face. Renee and Nicole are trying to hold Uncle Ken back. My father went over trying to defuse my godfather’s anger. “Ken, despite him deserving it, beating him won’t bring Elaina back. The best we all can do is get whatever we can from him and Evelyn. Plan an attack to retrieve her body. I just want to lay my daughter to rest and destroy every fucking one of them along the way.” My mother finally breaks down wailing on the ground. Reggie is trying to console her as best he could.
I couldn’t find Nolan or Yana. I orb to his mansion worried he would do something reckless. I search the entire place with no sign of him or Yana. Would he go to the realm to confront Elijah? Nolan is in so much pain, but one thing I am holding onto, I still feel Elaina. No matter what everyone thought, what I feel gives me hope.
I open a portal to the realm racing to the grove. I am halted in my tracks when a glowing figure stands before me, not Elijah but Eli his brother. “Nolan is not here and neither is Yana; I would check in Elaina’s pocket dimension if I were you. Before you ask, we know and in due time everything will become clear.” I hate when they did that, “Ah and Bryant please do your best to delay any announcements or funeral services.” How in the hell am I going to do that? “You’ll think of something, you always do. And you can orb there instead of portalling out.” I swear he is the most bizarre out of the twelve of them.
Nolan’s POV
I just want her in my arms. I knew what would eventually have to happen but experiencing it is not what I was prepared for. Yana must of sensed my anguish because the next thing I knew I am in Elaina’s pocket dimension, dropping to my knees I begin to break. The pain of not having her with me is overwhelming, I just cry an endless river of tears. Yana has shifted back and rubs up against me until I passed out.
I awake to the sounds of someone in the kitchen, in the bungalow she had built by the shore. Yana is curled up next to me. My head is pounding to no end. I sniff the air and follow the scent towards the kitchen. “You’re up. I made some tea; it will help with your headache.” I am shocked to see Bryant here, but I remembered, he was the only other person who knew of this place. I seat myself at the counter taking the cup from him. “I talked to everyone; it will remain business as usual. We are not making any announcements just yet. There will not be any funeral, until we find her.”
