Chapter 62 Convoy Attack
“Damn it, woman! Stop using that thing as a weapon. We are supposed to be hip bumping, not you knocking my hip out of alignment with that rump of yours.” Lex of course overexaggerating the size of my asset. No lie, it is pretty big but I liked it and what’s more important, Nolan loves it. “Stop whining like an old woman and get back to hip bumping.” Lex rolls his eyes at me but continues to hip bump with the rest of us.
My parents are snuggled up, petting on each other like they are newlyweds, it is winding down. Everyone is lounging in different areas; I am nestled in between Nolan’s legs by the pool. “That color looks really good on you; anything looks good on you.” He kisses the side of my head and I sighed. Lennox set up a playlist of different tracks to play out for the remainder of the night.
I watch Rowan hovering over the twins or more so over Katrina. I didn’t have the heart to break it to him that he would be sharing her with another man. Having more than one mate is not uncommon, but who he is, is what was going to make or break the trio. Just as I turn away from them my phone starts to ring with an alert, then so did everyone else’s.
The convoy moving Ashton was attacked and only one survivor, they weren’t expected to make it through the night. We all look around at each other. “We need to get to the command center!” One by one we orb out, the twins are arguing, Katrina wanting to stay back. Using this as a distraction to get out unsupervised. “You too, Trina. Now!” I look to Nolan, “It’s okay, you can do this. Breathe and we will do it together.”
We orb into the mouth of the tunnel directly in front of the command center. Everyone went to work. Brie has my scrying mirror focusing on the events to see what happened. The rest of us started taking off our clothing switching into our gear. “Ma petite, come. Tell me what you see?”
I look watching the convoy hit by ground explosives. Not one but several Lycan’s coming out of thin air. Everyone slaughtered by the ambush when one particular person caught my eye. Evil-Lynn, fucking bitch. I knew it! “Look further, Laina. See what can’t be seen.” I did what we practiced together pushing it further out in different directions, seeing it all connect like a spiderweb. My eyes water at what I saw. “You see, this is the only way. As I promised we will be there.”
I look at Brie, her eyes clouded over as she spoke in a trance like state. She snaps out of it. “What did I say, Mon Cher?” I swallow down the lump in my throat, “Nothing other than what was meant to be said.” Nolan looks in my direction, worry painting his face. Reggie claps Nolan on the shoulder helping direct his attention elsewhere, it won’t last long but long enough for me to come to terms with what needed to happen.
Bryant picks up activity in a remote area, Carpenter Valley to be exact. It is too close to my liking to Truckee. I have a silent conversation with my brother, he looks up at me taking my hand and kissing the back of it. Uncle Ken chimes in, “Guys, I know you usually do this alone, but this is my son and I feel responsible for him. Despite everything, I should be the one to bring him back in.” Normally, this would be a conflict of interest. With everything going on, I couldn’t deny his request. “Okay, Uncle Ken, suit up. You and my dad are pretty much close in size.” Bryant cocks his head to the side then links me, ”Laina, what are you doing?”
“He has to be there and I cannot alter the future.”
Ashleigh and Katrina are suiting up. “You two stay with Renee and Nikki. I need you here keeping comms open and having triage ready.” They both suck their teeth and pout. “We never get to do anything!” Ashleigh is more than ready; Katrina is who I was worry about. Ashleigh would be more concerned with keeping Katrina from getting hurt. Trina is good but got cocky not assessing the situation past the surface.
“You will, just not today,” trailing my eyes to Katrina. “I don’t need you distracted.”
Ashleigh knew exactly what I meant by it and says nothing further. We begin packing ammo. Nolan standing next to me, “I thought you don’t like guns?” he is right, I don’t. It didn’t mean I wasn’t going to use them, “I don’t but I can shave a whisker from your ear with one if need be.”
“Evelyn has played a part in this from the very beginning. I just want you to know now before we leave, I am going to kill her. No trial, no tribunal, no council investigation. I need to know you’re okay with that?”
Nolan looks into my eyes and without hesitation answers, “Do what you need to do, I will not stand in your way, promise.” That is all I needed to hear. “Everyone, we leave in ten. This is the first time in a long time we all we’re together again in battle. Please be safe and look out for each other. No matter what, move when I tell you all to move. That includes you, Mom and Dad. Especially you, Uncle Ken.”
They all place their fists over their hearts and responded in unison. “Yes, Commander!”
This is a now or never. I have to see this through and I couldn’t let them down. There is no way I could let Ashton go with all the intricate details he possessed, not only of our region but also of Tristan’s. Evelyn has a her due coming, she helped traffic wolves and Lycan’s. She is a disgrace to supe women everywhere.
