The Sovereign Heir (Book 1)

Chapter 13 Alpha Ceremony

Late September 2020

Two months and one week left and I’m done with school. Eight straight years and almost three degrees later, it was finally over. Nikki will be graduating next year along with Bryant. One less thing on my plate to worry about. So far, a minimum of breaches throughout the supe communities state side, but across the pond and the rest of Europe were still having issues. Some of the more remote packs weren’t as cooperative. My mother had to make a call to Prince Nolan to force them into implementing the changes. Believe it or not many of these remote packs despised women in leadership. For the past three hundred years my mother ruled, and they fought tooth and nail to keep the old ways.

Ashton somehow finally got his father to give him the alpha title, the change in power was coming up on the week of the fall equinox. I typically don’t participate in changes of power, my parents or our ambassadors usually handled that. My mother and father only attended the ones we held a close personal relationship with, this being one of them. King Alder would be sending his son Nolan to this event, and I had no choice but to mingle.

My grandmother sent over a beaded gown, set in sheer fabric, with a high slit to the right and a detachable train. It was something you would imagine in a fairy tale. Grandma Andrea liked to be over the top with clothes, more than a millennia in age and she was still defying dress code standards. “To my beautiful granddaughter. You light up the world and so should your gown as well as your feet. P.S. show off your tattoo, you earned it. Never let anyone make you feel ashamed of it.”

Nikki and I got ready in the palace. Fate would have it; we had a wardrobe malfunction. It was a dress from Nordstrom’s, I really love it on her. I hadn’t even gotten to launch any of my formal wear until after new year’s. But I had several prototypes hanging in my closet. Nikki, my mother and I were used as models for these new creations. My focus was not only dresses for the smaller framed women, but for curvy and plus sized women. Why couldn’t they look good too, instead of having to choose between unflattering clothes.

The dresses I had Nikki model for me weren’t finished but mine and my mothers were. I found one of mine that fit Nikki perfectly. I wish I had the time to fix her dress, but this one was also perfect. Royal blue, asymmetrical top cut with one shoulder strap. The split in the back accentuates her toned calves. Something was missing, ah the waist sash! I ran back in the closet and grab the sash. I wrap it in an ornate style making the dress pop even more.

“Well, what do you think? Do you like it? Oh shit, you hate it! Let me pull out two more.“ Nikki grabs my arm and replies, “No! I love it. It’s perfect. I will never buy a gown from anyone else if it’s not yours!” I sighed in relief, “Good, let’s go, we are almost late! I’m not getting yelled at by your parents and mine.” I took Nikki’s hand and orb us to the back entrance of the pack’s grand hall. “Umm, I wanted to ask and don’t kill me. Do you mind if I try to mingle with the prince tonight?” I pause and want to say hell no, but I couldn’t do that. He wasn’t mine and frankly I was really only infatuated with his beautiful face. I had no claim to him. Anyway she was Bryant’s mate, even if she didn’t know it yet. ”Sure, I mean you guys have to talk, you’re also of alpha blood too. Establishing a connection with the Lycans on a more personal level is good. Don’t worry about me, I know you love my brother.” Nikki smiles, “I sure do. But those she-wolves will be trying to jump on his dick as soon as they see him regardless. “

Shrugging, I respond as nonchalantly as possible, “He isn’t mine and I can’t claim him. I mean he looks good and all. I still plan on riding this wave solo. I’m not even his type. He likes thin model types with long legs, and you know that isn’t me. He is over 100 years old; he has probably bedded more women than our combined age. He can have or do anything he wants. One of them could be his mate tonight, which leaves me with only having diplomatic relations.”

If the origin of the Lycan’s was more widely known, maybe people wouldn’t be so fascinated with them. In a sense wolves are just like them, but with more humanity. In truth if it wasn’t for Allister they wouldn’t even exist. One thing I won’t allow is a repeat of the past, not while I’m alive. I put my crown on with Nikki’s assistance. I did a once over through Nikki’s eyes, my intertwined Dutch braid still intact with the ribbons, shooting star necklace hanging directly center. I made my way to the front entrance through the side hallway to meet Bryant. Nikki walked to the back of the hall to meet her parents.

Bryant was waiting for me with my cloak to cover my gown. Our parents were already here earlier to meet with the prince and ambassadors from neighboring territories. “Ready, sis?” I roll my eyes, “No, but let’s get this over with.”

A few of the warrior omegas were doubling as security with gammas standing by to announce guests of importance. I really didn’t like this part at all. I rather get in and out with minimal attention, some people kill for attention. Not me, I have had excessive attention since I was born, a normal life is all I wanted. The gamma securing the hall door announced our arrival, “Prince Bryant Renaud and Princess Elaina Renaud.” The gamma removes my cloak and there was the shock and ah moment my grandmother instigated with this dress. Everyone gasp as they looked up at us, descending our way down the stairs. Donna is throwing daggers at me as usual. Maybe I should make her bust another egg on her head tonight. “Behave, Laina, mom will kill you if she catches you doing that.” Fine, but she better stay out of my way. The platform was set with chairs for the Alpha’s family. Our seating is higher up to the right side of the stage. “Wait a damn minute, why is there an extra chair in our section! Nah, he is not sitting with us!” Bryant stifles a laugh, “Yes, he is unfortunately for you.”

I started to feel a little uneasy and decided to get some air after being greeted by a few of the ambassadors. I saw Prince Nolan way in the front left side, talking to a few she-wolves and Nikki was headed in his direction with Bryant. That was the perfect distraction, I headed through the side atrium. I took a seat and pulled out my phone to check some emails. There were a few couples out here with me, looking out at the night sky. I would stay long enough for the ceremony and fly out of here quickly. I’m not staying for the pack run, even if I get in trouble for leaving, it would be worth it.
