The Soul of Scarlet's Lost Tears

Chapter Upon tragedy is tolling against time

We, soon walked after one another, as Jack was the last one, he closed the door to his office closed, locking it behind him. Me and Madeline was further ahead, as he tried to catch up. It was when, we two were just a few feet from the doors of the dining room, when he finally caught up. Entering another huge room, where it was to capacity, with those who were in armor, in one section of the room, that was cut off from a section that was reserved for both head of the household, to their men, who were seated at the center rectangle table it was the same table that ate the late diner last night.

Soon I was escorted to where I was assigned to sit. At the right hand of Jack which sat at the head of the table as Madeline sat on his left, once everyone took almost every seat, it was about that time I saw Gideon walked into the room, walked over to where I was sitting, leaned over to the person that was on my right, leaned into his ear and said “you’re in my seat”, seeing a slight exasperation of annoyance, until he looked up at who said that to him, and once he saw it was Gideon who was looking at him with an impatiently waiting with his hands for across his chest still holding onto the half eaten apple.

When the person that was sitting looked up to see who it was, then suddenly noticing whom, he immediately jumped up and out of the chair, making it fall backward, as the back of the chair hit the floor. And almost landing on Gideon’s left foot.

With gasp of shook come over the room, the one who got from his chair, leaned over, and with his right hand picked up the chair and placing it back on all four legs. As he, then pulled it out, as he waited for Gideon to sit.

“Well, now that’s what I call service with a smile” Gideon said, as he started to sit while he slid him and the chair underneath the edge of the table, with a snide “thank you” and “you may go now”. Gideon then, turned and saw me look at him, “What?”, look came over his face as we didn’t say any words, when we were soon served breakfast. With some conversation, while each of us finished what was on our plates, the meal was done as we were all getting up from the table, then leaving the room.

Followed by me, Gideon, and Madeline took the brief recess. I followed Madeline, as she led us to a botanic garden that was in a green house.

Where right next to that was a labyrinth which was not surprising to me that they would have such a thing. Which I turned to her and kindly “where is your mother may I ask”, “oh, she’s not feeling well today, but she still want to meet you, hopefully before you go”.

Cuffing the petals of a white rose, amongst red roses. She then adds, “see here, you are like this one rose, different from all the rest, but” as she slides her hand down the stem, she then by doing so pricks herself along the sharp thorns, “still is a strong rose”.

“Madeline, Madeline, where are you?”, we heard one of the guards was shouting continually, when she regrettably answered back, “in here”, peeking in the greenhouse, the guard then replied, “your mother is calling for you, please come at once”.

With we all walked out of the greenhouse toward where her mother was, as she tried repeatedly asking the guard “is everything ok, do you know why she wants me”, it wasn’t long before we were standing in front of her mother’s bedroom door, that had a sentry guard posted, not letting anyone in.

Until he saw, Madeline, as he stepped aside opening the door for only her. Taking one look back toward us, then proceeded in to the room. The door slowly closed behind her.

We, as in Gideon and I was left loitering in the dim hallway, “so what’s the deal between you and Jack” Gideon asked trying to strike up a conversation in the mist of the dull silence, “oh” I started to say, “oh, him and I knew each other a long time ago”, he replied, “and that is how he treats old friends, gee what a guy”, I said trying to make it more understandable, “no it’s not like, it seemed he heard about a certain captain, and didn’t know it was me”.

“Oh, that makes sense”, he soon said, as the door slowly creaked open, as Madeline exited the room followed by a doctor, that looked very familiar. As the doctor looked down toward the floor as he soon closed the door behind him, “now your mother needs her absolute rest”, “yes Doc” she said holding back the tears, the doctor then looked up those who stood there in the hall.

“Nice to see you, Sara, you gotten tall” he said as he walked pass me, which then asked Madeline “is everything ok with your mom”, shaking her head side to side immediately said “no, she’s not doing good, in fact, her doctor told me, it is in the advanced stages”, taking a breather, she then added “whatever that means, I thought she had a very bad cold”. Now I’m at a loss, should I leave her, or should I wait a few days at her side like a friend with a shoulder to cry on if she needs it.

As I was thinking to myself, when suddenly “Sara, there you are” I turn around and saw Jack walk down the hall with a few other guards, “Sara, I need you to go tonight, don’t doddle any more”.

Looking at her, then back at him, then one last time back at Madeline, as she gave me a slight nod by saying, “you must go, but take Gideon with you”, “cha, why me?” Gideon asked followed by, “go with her please” giving a pleading look toward him, he replied “oh, alright, when do we leave”. Taking a few short steps toward where I was standing. “Ok, you can join her too, but just you” Jack said looking at the three of us, hiding a wink Gideon then obliged “sure thing boss”, then we both started to walk away from the two, leaving them alone in the hall, as the guards soon escorted me to a more proper room than before, as Gideon had the room a few doors down, as we were then instructed to gather our things quickly.

Noticing in my room that they had all my stuff piled on the queen size bed, with a small note attached to it, as it said “Sara, for your journey we added a few things that are in the closet, ps.

Please be careful they are very sharp”. To my wonder, I proceeded to walk to the closet, and soon after opening the door I saw not only a new outfit hung on a wire hanger, as there even was, new varnished weapons; a sword, arrows and a nice very new recurve bow that had some engraving on the handle.

Taking it off the hanger, feeling like a little girl on her birthday, as I heard some banging on the door, followed by a soft voice, “is everything alright mam, do you need any help”, I thought about it, while I took a good look at the cloths which is now laying on the edge of the bed, noticing I might need some help I said, “can you, yes please”, the door opened and three maids walked right in. In no time, we managed to figure it out, as they soon handed me a bag that had all my stuff packed neatly, as one of them held onto my bow and arrows in a pouch like satchel.

Leaving the room, as I continued to walk down to where I was once again met with the guards, and Gideon, who had two horses, waiting for me outside, as there was a bit of a chill in the air.

When it was around the time the horses all geared up, and I was just about get situated on my horse, when Madeline came running out of the house.

Stopping right next to me, catching her breathe, she handed me the one single white rose. Without saying a word, she took a few steps back, turned and ran back toward the hose. And only looked back toward us once she got to the front door.

Making a slight clicking sound, we soon turned our horses around, followed by us making a prompt exit. Though despite what Jack told Gideon of what to be only him, his five men soon joined up with us also on their own horses with a mule like donkey alongside.

A smile came over Madeline, as Jack had a disbelieving frown on his face, they both went back inside. Parting with such sweet sorrow.
