Chapter 14
Daisy hurriedly walked to Elizabeth and gently patted her back, soothingly speaking, “Mrs. Reeves, Prof. Austin is renowned as the world’s foremost medical sage. He can surely cure you of this illness. Why don’t you let him treat you?”
“I’ve said so many times. I don’t want him to cure me, even if it means I die.”
Daisy couldn’t figure out why Elizabeth insisted on refusing Henry’s treatment despite all her efforts to convince her.
“Could there be some unresolved issue between them?” she thought.
“Mrs. Reeves, please don’t let your emotions cloud your judgment. If you don’t want him to treat you, you have every right
to refuse. He’s not the only doctor in the world anyway. Gerald mentioned that he has brought in another top doctor from abroad who can also cure you. So, you can consider that option and relax.”
Lindsay also wrote her message on a small board.
[Great Grandma, you will definitely recover from your illness. Don’t be afraid of the doctor, Great Grandma. I’m here for you.]
Elizabeth looked at Lindsay with immense affection in her eyes.
“My dear Lindsay is such a sweetheart. Just having you around makes me feel better when I’m sick.”
Lindsay responded with a heartwarming smile, her eyes twinkling and radiating pure adorableness.
At that moment, Gerald, the director of Healthstone Hospital, entered cautiously and said with respect, “Daisy, Mr. Reeves, Miss Lindsay, I see you’ve come to visit Mrs. Reeves. As it happens, Mrs. Reeves‘ new attending doctor is here today, and I’ve brought her here to see Mrs. Reeves.”
As Christine walked into the room, she spotted Randall at once.
He stood there tall, commanding attention with an air of cold arrogance that seemed to keep the world at bay.
Her heart couldn’t help but skip a beat. Her fears had come true.
Subconsciously, Christine adjusted her mask. She wore a wig, applied foundation with a natural hue, donned old–fashioned black oversized glasses, and topped it off with a large mask. The transformation made her look like an experienced and mature female doctor in her forties.
She looked completely different at that moment and was very confident that Randall would never recognize her.
“Allow me to introduce you to Mrs. Reeves‘ new attending doctor. Her name is…”
“My name is Nancy.”
Christine feared that the director might disclose her real name, so she quickly provided another name.
She wanted to avoid Randall recognizing her true identity.
Nevertheless, it was a relief that Randall didn’t seem to pay any attention to her. He had an air of condescension and arrogance, and even when a person stood right in front of him, he maintained a blank stare, seemingly oblivious to their
presence.
Then, Christine saw the adorable Lindsay standing next to Randall.
Lindsay was undeniably cute with her pink little face and delicate, translucent skin.
Christine turned to Lindsay and showed a sweet smile.
Lindsay had fixed her eyes on Christine since she walked into the room.
“Her eyes look just like my mommy’s, but unlike my mommy’s gentle, long hair, she has a short, newsreel–style haircut, and my mommy’s skin is fair while hers looks a bit tanned,” she thought.
However, when Christine smiled, Lindsay’s excitement soared. “Her eyes curved just like my mommy’s when she smiled,” Lindsay–thought excitedly. “She is my mommy!”
A small thrill of recognition passed through her.
Of course, Christine had no idea that Lindsay had seen through her identity.
Daisy observed Christine closely and remarked to Elizabeth, “Mrs. Reeves, this doctor seems reliable and experienced, unlike those heavily made–up young girls we’ve seen before. I couldn’t even tell if they were here to be a doctor or participate in a show.”
Since knowing that Elizabeth was admitted, almost all the female doctors and nurses at Healthstone Hospital wore heavy make–up, hoping to bump into Randall. The strong scent of perfume even made Elizabeth sneeze.
Elizabeth’s face also softened a little.

You’re right. She does appear genuinely focused on her profession.”
Before Christine’s arrival, Director Schuman had warned her about Elizabeth’s difficult temperament and her tendency to change attending doctors frequently. However, Christine was unaware that her disguise of an older self would earn her good
reviews.
It was so lucky for her.
Turning to Elizabeth, Christine said, “Mrs. Reeves, I appreciate your trust. I have meticulously examined all your medical information, and considering your condition and my experience, I strongly recommend surgery.”
Elizabeth’s face darkened at the mention of surgery, and her eyes grew intense.
“I won’t have surgery.”
Elizabeth was resolute, and she didn’t want any part of it. Just the thought of a cut on her head made her shudder. She cherished her beauty all her life, and the idea of being shaved bald at this age was unbearable.
Even if she was meant to pass away, she wanted to do so while still being beautiful and splendid.
“Mrs. Reeves, your tumor is located at the base of the skull, a classic skull base chordoma. A skull base chordoma is closely. related to the brain stem, which controls the three most basic life functions: breathing, heartbeat, and consciousness. The tumor in this area is extremely perilous. Based on the brain CT results, your chordoma shows a tendency to grow from inside to outside of the skull through the skull base fissure. Hence, it is imperative that you undergo surgery without delay. I have performed hundreds of brain surgeries in various foreign countries, and you can place complete trust in me.”
At that point, Gerald chimed in, “Mrs. Reeves, the brain tumor at the base of the skull is extensive and affects numerous functions. Due to its deep location and intricate structure, the base of the skull is considered a challenging surgical area. Only a handful of experts in the world are capable of performing such surgeries, and among them, Dr. Nancy is the best, renowned for never making even a 0.1–millimeter error. She is even hailed as the Hand of God‘ in Cardolia.”
Upon hearing this, Lindsay’s eyes sparkled with admiration. “Mommy’s so powerful!” she thought.
Meanwhile, Randall finally turned to look at the unimpressive and seemingly plain woman before him.
“This woman is the legendary Hand of God‘ in Cardolia? Dr. Nancy?” he thought.
Daisy, once again, tried to persuade Elizabeth. “Mrs. Reeves, Gerald is right this time. You can trust him. Just rest assured that your body will recover after the surgery.”
Elizabeth had led a life of nobility, bearing witness to more than her fair share of stupid women who always played tricks. only to seek fleeting connections with men, so naturally, she harbored a deep admiration for capable women.
“I know she’s a capable doctor, but I’ve had my fill of life’s trials. I don’t wish to have a cut on my head until my last breath. Daisy, please ask someone to prepare my belongings. I long to return home now.”
Her voice resonated with authority and conviction, leaving no room for negotiation.
Urgently, Gerald implored. “Mrs. Reeves, you mustn’t leave the hospital. If you’re discharged, your life will be at risk every passing minute. I cannot bear the thought of it.”
Yet, Elizabeth remained resolute.
“I’ve spent most of this month in your hospital, and now I yearn for the comforts of my home. Stand aside!”
Elizabeth’s fierceness struck Gerald, leaving him perplexed and uncertain.

Chapter 15
“Mrs. Reeves, don’t act like a child. It’s unsafe for you to leave the hospital in your current condition.”
Elizabeth’s gaze turned icy, and her tone conveyed a sense of coldness when she spoke. “Daisy, do my words as an old woman mean nothing to you? I want to go home right now!”
Daisy observed Elizabeth’s growing anger and didn’t dare to say anything more.
As Elizabeth grew older, her behavior seemed increasingly immature.
At that moment, Christine intervened with a soft, persuasive voice, “Mrs. Reeves, the hospital environment can be unpleasant. I understand your desire to be at home.”
Elizabeth’s expression softened a bit as she listened to Christine’s words.
Everyone wanted to keep her hospitalized, but none of them ever considered her feelings at all.
“Mrs. Reeves, if you don’t want surgery, I’ll treat you with traditional medicine first. Let us see the effect of treatment for a period of time and then decide on the future treatment plan. What do you think?”
Now that modern medicine was popular, traditional medicine was used less and less.
Elizabeth’s former attending doctors subjected her to blood draws, X–rays, and constant infusions, drowning her in potions daily. Those modern medicine treatments left her hands bruised, and her feeling like her blood vessels would burst.
Consequently, she developed a growing disdain for modern medicine, believing the remedies of the traditional medicine to be superior. However, she lamented that finding a skilled traditional medicine doctor had become increasingly difficult.
Therefore, what Christine said immediately piqued her interest now.
“I never expected you to know traditional medicine as well. Nowadays, very few people study it.”
With a humble attitude, Christine responded, “Traditional medicine may not produce results as swiftly as modern medicine, but it addresses the root causes and is profound in its approach.
Elizabeth’s anger from earlier dissipated entirely, replaced by an appreciative expression.
“Mrs. Reeves, let me examine you first.”
Christine placed her hand on Elizabeth’s wrist and furrowed her delicate brows in concentration, appearing as serene and peaceful as a lily, captivating all who beheld her.
Randall’s eyes were drawn to Christine’s delicate hand resting on Elizabeth’s, finding it incongruent with her overall
appearance.
His eyes grew darker. Something about the woman in front of him intrigued him deeply.
Christine’s mind was preoccupied with the stark reality of Elizabeth’s condition, far graver than she had initially anticipated. However, Elizabeth remained steadfast in her refusal to undergo surgery or accept any treatment presently. Therefore, Christine needed to stabilize Elizabeth’s emotions first.
“Mrs. Reeves, I shall prescribe you a few herbal remedies to take back home. Then you should return to the hospital in a few days for a routine checkup.”
Christine spoke with a voice as soothing as a babbling brook, which sounded very comfortable, far removed from the sly. insincere tones some women employed.
“You mean I can go back home today?”
Elizabeth had never thought that Christine would permit her to be discharged from the hospital so quickly.
Christine smiled warmly and reassured her, “Yes, Mrs. Reeves, you may return to your family today.”
Gerald’s mind went blank upon hearing what Christine said. He whispered to Christine, “Is this okay? Elizabeth’s condition is so severe that if we let her go home now, we might be left to face the consequences.”
“Can we prevent Elizabeth from leaving and keep her hospitalized?”
Gerald paused. Elizabeth had been hospitalized for some time and was very disappointed with their medical staff. Now she wanted to leave, but everyone failed to change her mind. Even he was almost slapped by her just now.
“Please understand her current state. Mrs. Reeves can’t get angry anymore. My medicine can sustain her for now. Pressuring her to stay at the hospital, under these circumstances, would only make her more resistant to treatment.”
Hearing what Christine said, Gerald found her reasoning sound. Still, he couldn’t help but wonder if Nancy indeed possessed the ability to cure Elizabeth’s illness.
His future seemed contingent upon this outcome.
Elizabeth beamed with a broad smile and declared, “Daisy, go and pack our things.”
