Chapter 173
King Braedon
Another untimely interruption I hadn't anticipated. The man sitting in front of me looked as though he had been starved, was dehydrated, and looked unkempt. He was staring studiously at the ground but at my words, he inhaled sharply. I was aware of the anger that Blair was exhibiting and I couldn't blame her. This was the last thing we needed. Not with how fragile she was and how vulnerable. Not to mention that we were supposed to be leaving for the Lunar Sky Pack tomorrow and that might be put on hold because I sure as hell wasn't leaving this man alone with my mate. "Maybe because I have been locked up for the last few weeks, or months" the man supplied dully.
Blair looked unimpressed. I however looked even closer at the man and noted, with great surprise, that he no longer possessed a mark on his neck. Interesting. "What happened to your mark?" I asked bluntly.
His face turned a dark crimson red. Blair looked at Alpha Johnathon's neck, her eyes widening in shock. "My wife rejected me" he growled, looking shamefaced.
"This is just some ploy to lower our defenses and let down our guard," Blair said abruptly "We can't trust a single word this bastard says."
"Blair," I said sharply, causing her to look at me indignantly "let the man speak. I think you'll be surprised at what he has to say."
She glowered at me and folded her arms across her chest, sulkily sitting back down. I exhaled. "Why did your mate reject you? Why are you here Alpha Johnathon, I have to admit that you're not exactly welcome here" I added with a snarl.
The man looked unsurprised. "My wife rejected me because I didn't agree with what she and my daughter were doing in the pack," he said quietly Some sentences are incomplete if you are not reading this novel on Jo bn ib.com. My wife knew this and still, she continued to go against my code, knowing full well that I wouldn't agree with it."
"You mean like abandoning an infant in the forest because she had a heart condition" snapped Blair, looking a stunned Alpha Johnathon in the eyes "That didn't seem to go against your moral code" she snarled, looking ready to rip his head off.
Oh boy. I was hoping that Blair would leave that little tidbit till last, but evidently, it was praying on her mind and we weren't going to get anywhere until she confronted Alpha Johnathon about that. Alpha Johnathon swallowed hard, his face going ashen.
"So you know about that?" he whispered looking sick.
"Oh I know who you are father," Blair said sarcastically, looking him directly in the eyes "and how you were ready to kill me when I was born. Tell me, did you enjoy torturing me and hurting me as I grew up? Did you get some sort of sick satisfaction out of hurting me, knowing that I was your daughter while I had no notion of why you and your wife hated me so much?"
Alpha Johnathon gulped. "Blair, it wasn't like that," he said weakly as she sneered at him.
"I tried to protect you," he said and Blair looked at him incredulously.
"Protect me" she hissed "How is beating me senseless and whipping me protecting me?"
"It was the only way I could stop Bianca from murdering you in your sleep" he cried and Blair fell silent "She was so angry about keeping you alive that if I didn't hurt you, she would threaten to kill you every chance she got. I'm sorry," he said miserably, looking down at his hands "I know it was wrong and you didn't deserve it, but I was stuck in the middle, with a wife constantly breathing down my neck and eventually I lost sight of what was wrong and right."
Silence. Blair's eyes softened, albeit slightly as she looked away. I, however, still thought of Alpha Johnathon as a weak man. He should have rejected his wife, rather than be forced into hurting his own daughter. I narrowed my eyes. "I still want to know what made you run here, in such desperate measures" I bit out.
"I told you, it's my wife and Brynn plus I guess Ashton," he said a little wildly "They've gone mad. They're trafficking omegas and rogues from other packs and have gone against your decree to abolish the breeding program. They're making money by providing Alpha's of various packs women to breed with, but they're also doing it with betas and Gamma's now."
I let out a roar that made the windows shudder. Blair's face contorted into an expression of anger. "So your pack is responsible for all of the trafficking" I spat out "I should have killed you and your horrible wife when I had the chance."
He bowed his head "With all due respect your Highness, I believe that this was actually Brynn's idea and that my wife has further developed it. My daughter" he glanced apologetically at a very stiff and solemn-faced Blair "has always been spoilt and treated like a princess but I never dreamed she could be this cold and calculating. It appears she takes after her mother" he said grimly "as it was I was supposed to be killed and only managed to escape with the help of another."
He sounded upset. "The man who was with me, in the dungeon, Beta Cody, sacrificed himself in order to get me to safety and to ensure that I made it here. He was a fine man, loyal to myself, and was caught trying to escape the pack and inform you of what was occurring." "I remember Cody," Blair said softly, "he was one of the few who didn't lay a hand on me and who tried to protect me on a few occasions" She sounded like she was in a world of grief.
"He was an excellent warrior," Alpha Johnathon said fondly "and I will always remember his sacrifice."
"He shouldn't have had to lose his life" Blair snapped, rising to her feet, while I reached out a hand to her "Your damn wife should have been thrown out of the pack long ago for her behavior towards others in the pack. You should never have tolerated her piss poor behavior. Your a poor excuse for an Alpha" her voice cracked "and a damn useless father."
