Chapter 169
King Braedon
It was agonizing watching Blair weaken before my very eyes, my concern for our unborn pup and her overwhelming. If I could have traded places to keep her alive, I wouldn't have hesitated. Instead, all I could do was watch helplessly as the doctor continued to shout out instructions to the
nurses who had brought more equipment, hooking Blair up to an IV while I willingly gave my blood.
"There must have still been the merest traces of silver in her system" the doctor finally turned to me, a grim expression on her face "and Blair suffered a subchrionic hemorrhage. She needs to be careful for the next few days, but I believe that the bleeding will stop. Your blood is already working to clear the silver from her system. I'm afraid that her immune system is weakened by the pregnancy and she also appears to have a slight cold, hence the fever."
"A trifecta" I murmured, looking at Blair's pale face as she listened intently.
"Guess I'm just lucky," she said miserably "but the baby is okay?"
The doctor nodded. "So far your pup is fine. Your little one is quite determined. Their heartbeat has grown stronger, which is a very good sign, and we will continue to monitor the two of you closely. Right now you need bed rest and plenty of fluids."
I sat beside Blair and reached for her hand. She sighed and rested against me, looking far more relaxed now. Her eyelids fluttered. "I wonder whether we are having a boy or a girl" she murmured, looking down at her slightly swollen belly.
"It doesn't matter, so long as they are healthy," I told her sincerely.
"Bet it's a girl" quipped a voice and I turned to glower at James who smirked "One that's exactly like Blair. We know who wears the pants in this relationship," he said teasingly.
Blair laughed. I narrowed my eyes at my Beta promising retribution later.
The doctor merely smiled to herself, while the nurses began to pack up their stuff. Sarah stepped into the room and walked to Blair, hugging her while I moved out of the way. "You scared us," she said warmly "I hope you're okay." "Doctor said bed rest and fluids. The baby is okay" Blair assured her, just as Josie and Sierra walked in.
What the hell was this? A party of some kind? There were way too many people in our bed chamber for my liking. Sierra plonked herself on the bed, making herself at home, while Josie nervously sat on the armchair that I had just vacated. "How are you feeling toots?" Sierra drawled. Blair smiled tiredly "Better now," she said with an exhale.
"I'm sorry I've been such a bad friend" Josie whispered "I just..."
Blair looked directly at her "Josie you have nothing to be sorry for. You had your own things to deal with. I understand that. You're here now, that's all I care about."
A lone tear trailed down Josie's cheek. I heard a sniffle and turned my head, expecting to see Sarah sobbing but instead, James was wiping his eye.
"Are you kidding me?" I said incredulously.
"It's just so touching" he muttered sheepishly.
Sarah giggled and elbowed him, while I rolled my eyes.
"So who would have thought that Julia was batshit crazy" commented Sierra with a shake of her head "Braedon you really know how to pick them" she added with a raised brow.
"It's because they find him irresistible," James said with a smirk.
Every single woman in the room burst into tears of laughter. I had never felt so indignant in all my life. I stared at them all, feigning injury. "I can't believe you would treat your king so shamefully" I muttered "You ought to be punished for such disrespect" I threatened. They only laughed harder.
James clapped me on the shoulder "So anyway, I found this in Stella's pocket" he said showing me a crumpled-up piece of paper.
I frowned and took it, carefully unfurling it, not wanting to rip it or smudge the writing.
It was difficult to decipher and was even more perplexing when you read what little there was on the paper.
14 0 2 R Lunar Sky Pack Midnight Full Moon.
"What do you suppose that means?" I said with a scowl.
James shrugged. "It could mean anything," he said "but clearly it involves the Luna Sky Pack. The Full Moon is in four days from now," he said thoughtfully.
"I know that," I said exasperated "but what do you suppose the rest of it? Why would Stella be interested in the Lunar Sky Pack? This handwriting doesn't match hers does it?"
Josie got up and took a look before shaking her head. "That's not her writing," she said wrinkling her nose "It's too neat and tidy. Stella's was messy and hard to understand."
"So somebody else wrote it. Do you know who was sending her information or communicating with her while she was here?"
"Just her pack," Josie said casually "No one else as far as I knew, but she didn't make a habit of leaving all her stuff out for me to look at. I'm surprised she didn't get rid of this note."
"Probably thought that it was indecipherable or forgot she had put it in her pocket," I said, still looking at the paper, squinting my eyes at it and growing frustrated as I struggled to understand the meaning of it.
"We could just go to the Lunar Sky pack and see for ourselves what's going on. Mayne Stella intended on going there to meet someone?" Blair suggested.
I looked at her sharply. "We?" I said as she cringed from the expression on my face "We are not going anywhere" I growled "You are going to stay here on bed rest, like you've been told to by the doctor here."
She opened her mouth to protest but I silenced her with a look. She reluctantly closed her mouth.
"Second" I continued, mulling over her suggestion "even if we did go to the Lunar Sky Pack we have no way of knowing what we're going for or who she intended to meet. It could be a romantic liaison for all we know" I pointed out "in which case it would be a wasted trip."
