Chapter 160
Blair POV
I began to head upstairs, feeling a sense of disquiet. Dusk spoke, sounding a little worried.
Something feels wrong. I didn't like this plan to begin with, but now, it feels like we might have put ourselves in serious danger.
Dusk, relax. We took precautions and we're the strongest wolf here, besides Braedon. Who is going to have the arrogance to take us on?
Just because we are a strong wolf, doesn't mean that we can't be overtaken or outnumbered. We can't afford to be cocky. Perhaps we should remain downstairs where we are seen by multiple pack members.
This isn't like you Dusk. You're normally so self-assured and confident. What has you so on edge?
A gut feeling I have. I can't put my paw on it. Please, Blair, listen to what I'm saying, just this once.
Very well Dusk. I trust your instincts. But there's a book in the bedroom I want. Why don't I grab that and then we go downstairs and read it? Will that meet your approval?
Very well, but be quick about it. Perhaps once we are downstairs we could mind-link our mate and find out how he is going with everything. I may be overreacting and being foolish. I already miss mate and he hasn't been gone long. Not to mention Lucian. I understand Dusk.
We headed upstairs and down the corridors. I made my way back to the bedroom that Braedon and I shared, smiling whimsically to myself, and opened the door, stepping foot inside. I frowned. I walked inside a few steps, feeling a sense of dread. The door shut with a loud bang behind me. Something sharp pricked my neck and I put my hand up, grabbing the dart and pulling it from my neck, blinking rapidly and dropping it to the ground.
"What" I mumbled, turning around blankly, Dusk going quiet in my mind.
A shadowy figure peeled itself from the space beside the door, a smile glittering on its lips. I struggled to make out their features as my legs collapsed and I sunk to my knees, my breathing shallow and uneven.
Desperately I tried to mind-link Braedon or Sarah but I couldn't. I could feel myself becoming dizzy and disorientated as I fell onto my back, staring up at the ceiling, my eyes turning into narrow slits. The figure moved closer, their steps slow and steady. I reached out blindly, their scent permeating my nostrils and causing my breath to catch. This was impossible. No way. It couldn't be her. How could we have got it so wrong? She was away from the pack house, we had been sure of it. We had been so certain we knew who the culprit was and yet, my veins turned ice cold as terror struck my heart. She cackled, bending down to look me in the eyes.
"Stupid little Blair" she whispered harshly, her eyes glinting with madness "Do you have any idea how much pain you've caused me?" she whispered "How much it's hurt me to watch you with my precious King?"
I coughed, turning onto my side, fighting the urge to vomit, my body shaking violently.
"What did you give me?" I wheezed "What did you poison me with."
Her lips curled up in derision, her features blurred. "Just a little wolfsbane," she said with a giggle "After all, we both know that I wouldn't be able to win against you otherwise. How dare you convince Braedon to mark you? To get you pregnant with his pup?" she mocked "while I, was forced to watch from afar, loving him while he never even knew I existed. Just a damn pack member in his mind, somebody to show gratitude to but never love. I always had a chance though, even with that damn Cordelia. He never marked her you know" she said casually, as though we were having a conversation "not even when she begged for it. I admired him for that. She was nothing but a greedy gold digger" she said spitefully "and if he had kept her around for much longer, I would have gotten rid of her too."
I was shocked. I writhed on the ground. The wolfbane flooded through my body. She knelt down and retrieved a silver dagger from her ankle. It felt like fire was spreading through my body and the pain was indescribable. I felt my throat tighten. I coughed some more. "You know that the mate bond is sacred. What you're describing is obsession, not love" I told her, my voice rising slightly.
She laughed "All these years and even rejecting my mate for the sake of having him and you want to accuse me of not loving him?" she hissed.
She had rejected her own mate in hopes of having Braedon. She was more insane than I realized. I looked up at her in horror.
She rubbed her stomach "You know, I even managed to get pregnant with his pup" she said with a smirk "All I had to do was use some of his seed from a condom, but I couldn't carry it to term, I lost it. But it doesn't matter" she said nonchalantly as I shuddered "because with you gone, we can have a pup the normal way."
"Do you think that he'll want to be anywhere near you when he discovers you are responsible for my death?" I asked.
She giggled. "That's the beauty of it. You both came to the wrong conclusion of who was responsible for what was happening to you. You failed to heed the warnings I left you. When he discovers you dead, he's going to blame the wrong person and she's going to end up killed out of grief. While he's grieving I'll lend him a shoulder to cry on and naturally, he'll develop feelings for me" she whispered.
"You are older than him" I choked out.
"Age has no bearing on love" she growled.
She raised the knife above her head. "Don't do this" I pleaded, fixing my eyes on her and she glared down at me with hatred.
"Goodbye Blair, it's nice knowing you won't be around any longer. I hated having to pretend to like you" she said chillingly.
I saw the knife raised higher and my throat constricted. "Julia, don't" I screamed just as the door plunged open and she turned, knife still raised in her hand while I scrambled desperately to my feet.
