Chapter 148
King Braedon POV
I growled, moving to stand beside my mate, watching my blood go down the drip in her arm. Blair's eyes fluttered closed. Her body continued to convulse occasionally.
Our mate is suffering and there is nothing we can do, besides provide blood
my wolf mourned.
When we find out who is responsible for all of this, they are going to be begging us to kill them by the time we're through. I want mate. I want our pup to live.
We can do nothing more than be here for her and pray the moon goddess hears our prayers. I am not leaving Blair's side until she awakens, I don't care how long it takes. I refuse to give up on her.
As do I. Find whoever is responsible for this and eliminate the threat to our mate. If they fail, they will try again. Blair is not safe until they are caught.
My brow furrowed. The marquee had been so crowded that I couldn't place whoever might have gone near the water. I would have to remind James to redo background checks on everybody who had been a waiter or waitress but they had all come from my pack. Perhaps I had been foolish having the summit while this had been going on. I had been arrogant and cocky, believing it to be a safe event being surrounded by strong Alpha's and Lunas.
Blair's lips parted "Braedon" she whimpered.
"I'm here, princess, I'm here" I whispered, kissing the palm of her hand, feeling the coldness of her skin and shivering slightly.
Her body temperature was dropping. Dr Celia raised a brow. "We need to get her warmed up," she said briskly.
I began to pull off Blair's clothes. The doctor flattened her lips. She turned her back when I began to strip mine off. "It will be quicker to use body heat," I said casually, sliding onto the bed and cuddling up to Blair, the doctor turned around and continued to observe Blair's vitals.
She was cold. So cold. I pressed up against her. She was like a block of ice. I rubbed her arms, trying to distribute some of my heat, and was rewarded as I felt her body beginning to warm slightly. Dr Celia looked pleased. "Better but she's not out of the woods yet. Stay next to her" she said, while the nurses looked a bit taken aback as they continued to come in and out of the room "Your wolf is doing its best to warm up its mate. There's nothing like the mate bond to help each other heal" she added knowingly.
A nurse came scurrying in and handed the sheet of paper she was holding in one hand to the doctor. "The blood test results" Dr Celia muttered, scanning the paper rapidly before her eyes widened and she reached for a syringe. "What is it?" I asked sharply.
"She's been given silver mixed with the water, it wouldn't have been visible when she drank" she snapped "I need to counteract it and get it out of her system now or she has no chance of surviving."It's why her wolf is struggling to heal her."
She plunged the syringe in and Blair began to retch. I turned her head, watching as she began to vomit onto the floor, over and over again, her eyes fluttering weakly. I winced, as it seemed to go on forever, Blair coughing up blood until she was silent. I gently lowered her head back on the bed, checking she was bleeding. The doctor bit her lip.
"Did she vomit it all up?" I asked urgently.
Dr Celia looked uncertain "Not all of it, but hopefully enough that she'll live" she exhaled "especially given that she has your blood in her system as well. Who would have given her such lethal poisons?"
I didn't know. The nurses began to silently clean up the mess from the floor. "When will we know if she's okay?" I asked, seeing blood mixed in with the vomit and cringing.
The doctor met my eyes "If she doesn't die in the next hour, then she'll live" she said very quietly, causing my chest to tighten "Until then, all you can do is hold her and make her comfortable Alpha King. Make sure she is warm, hold her so that the mate bond remains strong and pray" she finished.
I glanced down at Blair. She was still cold, and I wrapped my arms around her, rubbing my head against hers.
"I swear, I'm going to catch whoever did this to you," I told her, as the doctor quietly bid the nurses to leave, "but I need you to do me a favor and live sweetheart" I added, pressing a kiss to her temple.
The doctor stayed unobtrusively in the background, observing, the minutes feeling torturous. Blair's condition remained unchanged, and I found myself rubbing her body, trying to warm it up further, my desperation increasing as the hour drew
near.
As the hour passed by, Blair's eyes began to flutter slowly open and I almost wept with joy as she turned her ashen face towards me, a look of puzzlement on her face.
"Braedon" she whispered hoarsely.
"Blair" I breathed, gripping her tightly as she glanced at me, and then around the room "Sweetheart you're alive," I said thickly.
The doctor checked her vital signs. "You're improving and I want to check baby's heartbeat," she said slowly as Blair gazed at her in horror.
"Oh god, the baby" she exclaimed, sitting up and oblivious to her nakedness.
Dr Celia placed the ultrasound probe on her stomach and deftly found the baby's heartbeat which was beating strongly. "Your baby is fine" she assured us, "but that was a close call. You could very well have lost your child and as it stands, you must take the next few days easy in order to recover" she explained as I nodded, Blair's smile bright enough to rival the sun's brilliance.
"Braedon, what happened? Somebody put something in the drink" she said sleepily.
"She'll be tired," Dr Celia said narrowing her eyes "but that's normal."
I laid back down with Blair, covering her back up with the blanket "Sleep darling" I soothed, mind-linking James and informing him that Blair was alive "I'll tell you everything when you wake back up again. Get some rest" I added, watching as she fell asleep, my arm wrapped protectively around her as I glanced deliberately towards the doorway.
Until the perpetrator was found, I would not be sleeping and guards would be with Blair every minute of the day. I could no longer afford to take chances with her safety. My wolf was in full agreement, overjoyed that our mate was alive, and ecstatic our pup was as well. Blair shifted in her sleep, causing me to tighten my arms, before settling back down, whimpering slightly "It was you" she cried, and then stopped, beginning to snore.
Had Blair seen who it was? Did she know the person behind everything? Did I dare wake her or was she merely dreaming? I began to wonder if the person who was behind it all was somebody close to us, that we might never have even thought of before. Somebody we both trusted and whether that might prove to be our downfall.
