Chapter 24
Chapter 24
Gideon stared at the screen, suddenly remembering the invasion of his computer, which started with the appearance of this pink pig emoji.
He flexed his fingers, paused momentarily, and finally typed a message.
[She’s asleep.]
On the other end, Ruben stared at his computer screen, expressionless, but a hint of displeasure crept into his heart.
Why is someone using Mommy’s phone?’
[Who are you?]
Ruben typed rapidly, this time without any emoji. His brief and brisk typing revealed his bad mood.
Gideon glanced at the name, pondering how to reply, when another message from Ruben popped up.
[You’re Gideon.]
Gideon raised an eyebrow in surprise, replying quickly: [You know, kids who don’t sleep at night don’t grow tall.]
Ruben quickly retorted: [Taking someone else’s phone will make you incredibly ugly.]
It was a typical childish retort. Gideon instantly thought of a little boy he had seen several times in the kindergarten.
Just as he was about to reply, he noticed Edith waking up, dazed.
The next second, the phone in his hand was snatched away. Edith quickly glanced at the screen, holding her breath.
“Did you touch my phone?”
Instead of answering directly, Gideon deflected. “I heard it keep buzzing. It was disturbing my rest.”
Edith
gave Gideon a sharp look, put away her phone, and stood up.
“Mr. Peterson, since you are alright, I’ll be going back first.”
Saying this, Edith was about to grab her bag and leave, but Gideon caught her arm. She asked patiently, “Do you need something else?”
“You’re the one who took me to the hospital, so naturally, you should stay and make sure I’m well,” Gideon said.
She thought, ‘Did this fully grown adult want me to stay and care for him all night?’
Biting back her irritation, Edith said deliberately, “If you need care, I can contact Ray for you.”
“He needs to sleep.”
‘Don’t I need sleep?’ Edith thought.

She pressed her lips, trying to shake off the grip on her hand, but she couldn’t.
“Mr. Peterson, I’m not your assistant. I’ve already accompanied you to the dinner as you requested. What do you want from me?”
Edith stood there, looking exhausted.
She was indeed very tired.
With all the evening events, her working routine had been completely disrupted.
She had endured enough!
“I need some water.”
Gideon, shifting the topic, swallowed instinctively to show his apparent thirst.
Edith pressed her lips, remaining silent.
Yet Gideon persisted. “Edith, it’s just fetching a glass of water for a patient. Is it that difficult?
“You don’t show any impatience when bustling around for other men.”
Edith fell silent.
Taking a deep breath, Edith turned around and roughly grabbed a water cup. “Let go.”
Seeing Edith’s actions, Gideon loosened his grip only to hold the hem of her dress.
She wondered, ‘Is he afraid I will leave?’
Edith didn’t say much more and glanced at the clock. “Drink up quickly. I need to get back to my kids.”
It was more of an announcement. Edith had no intention of discussing it with Gideon.
Gideon spoke up and looked at the people standing at the ward’s door. “So, if they’re here, does that mean you don’t have to go back?”
‘What did he mean?’ she wondered.
Following his gaze, Edith saw her kids at the door, with Bonnie behind them.
Looking a bit embarrassed, Bonnie scratched her head and said, “They said you were here, and I was worried something had happened to you… I couldn’t get through on the phone…”
Edith walked over and crouched down.
Leaning against the wall, Ruben didn’t look at her, but Edith knew her son’s capabilities well. It was probably he who had led them here.
“Thank you, Ruben.”
Edith spoke with a hint of apology. “Mommy was too busy today, so I forgot to call back. Ruben, don’t be mad at me, okay?”
There was no response, but looking into Ruben’s eyes, Edith knew he had forgiven her.

And then there was another kid…
Edith turned to look for Jeanne, who had just been there a moment ago.
A childish voice came behind her, sounding adorably whiny. “Gideon, what are you doing

lying there?
“Are you dying?”
Gideon remained silent and didn’t know what to say,
The child’s blunt words genuinely frightened Edith.
But Gideon didn’t take offense, explaining that he only had a stomach bleed and wasn’t dying yet, thanking Jeanne for her concern.
At an age of innocent curiosity, Jeanne kept bombarding Gideon with endless questions.
“Do you like my mom?”
Edith hurriedly picked Jeanne up but couldn’t stop the little one in her arms from speaking. “I think you’re a bit like a cream cake, Gideon.”
What an odd comparison was that.
Intrigued, Gideon propped himself up and reached to take Jeanne’s hand, but Edith stopped him.
“Jeanne, it’s time to go home.”
Edith stood up, ready to leave with Jeanne.
But the kid, seizing a moment when Edith was distracted, slipped back to Gideon’s bedside. “Gideon, will you come to visit my house?”
Gideon glanced at Edith and spoke softly. “Of course, if your mom doesn’t mind.”
Jeanne, pleased with the response, beamed with joy.
“Alright then, when will you come?”
“He’s busy and couldn’t make it. Let’s go home, let Gideon rest,” Edith interrupted them, pulling Jeanne back into her embrace.
Aside from work, she didn’t want to see Gideon at all.
Edith glanced at Bonnie, who immediately took Ruben’s hand and prepared to leave.
Her actions, however, drew Gideon’s attention to Ruben, who was standing in the corner.
Gideon’s

gaze fell on Ruben’s expressionless face, causing his brow to furrow.
Noticing this, Edith realized that Ruben wasn’t wearing his glasses today!
She quickly blocked him with her body in a hurry, urging Bonnie to lead the way.
Watching them hurry away, Gideon finally looked away.
He was curious and wondered if someone so young could hack into his computer and company systems.
In the end, Gideon still doubted his thoughts.
How could that be possible?
Ruben was not that kind of genius.
Meanwhile, the genius who had just left the hospital sat in the backseat, his fingers crossed

Beside him, Jeanne was lively and active, creating a stark contrast.
“Mommy, are you angry?”
Jeanne leaned in with her face, looking sweet. How could Edith push her away?
“No, I’m not.”
Edith was at a loss for words. She had always thought that taking good enough care of the kids would make up for the fact that the children didn’t have a father.
But she was wrong, terribly wrong.
Looking at the adorable Jeanne in her arms, a sense of sadness welled up in Edith’s heart. How could she explain this to her children?
Bonnie looked at Edith’s puzzled expression and broke the tense atmosphere.
“Edith, do you know how amazing your son is?”
Driving the car, Bonnie sounded very excited. “If it weren’t for him giving us the address, we still wouldn’t have known where you were…”
Jeanne also nodded in agreement. “Ruben is cool!”
“What happened?”
While Edith knew Ruben’s capabilities, she couldn’t fathom how a four-year-old could do so
much.
It wasn’t until Bonnie recounted the incident that Edith was genuinely amazed.
