The Pigeon Pair Saves The Marriage by Janice Gold

Chapter 23

Chapter 23

Edith ended up downing three drinks amidst the cheering crowd in this showdown.

Edith couldn’t help but blush. Even though it was just a small amount in the glass, it was whiskey.

The burning sensation in her stomach was intense, but her mind was clear.

“If you can’t drink, don’t force yourself.”

Gideon whispered to Edith, who was sitting beside him, but Edith replied, “It’s for work, right?”

Everyone at the table was drinking shots.

How could she escape this?

Plus, Edith didn’t want Gideon to drink on her behalf. What if it led to some unsavory rumors? Who would be responsible then?

Edith swallowed hard, and her mouth was filled with the taste of alcohol.

The dinner had just started, and what awaited Edith was a series of toasts, one after the other. She had never seen this before.

“She’s not drinking anymore.”

Gideon stepped in to intercept the toasts. This time, Edith wisely chose to stay silent.

Watching Gideon down the drinks, Edith suddenly realized she had underestimated him, worrying he would get drunk.

But from his demeanor, he didn’t seem like someone who would be felled by just a couple of drinks, right?

By the end of the dinner, Edith had finally recognized everyone at the table. The person on her left, dressed in a suit, was a leader from the Artifacts Administration.

The others were all more or less related to artifacts.

Edith was curious about those people. After all, Gideon had said he brought her to explain the reasons for the project’s delay, but he hadn’t mentioned the identities of the people

present.

They all seemed impressive.

And it seemed Gideon was quite familiar with them, more than just acquaintances from a dinner.

When the dinner was over, Edith and Gideon bid farewell to the others. Turning back, she saw him massaging his temples, sitting motionless in his seat.

“Hello, here’s the bill for the dinner.”

Edith glanced at Gideon again, who showed no reaction, probably unable to pay

the bill.

Edith took out the card from her bag and handed it over. “The card doesn’t need a password.”

Gideon had drunk a lot. Edith walked over and patted his shoulder. “Can you hold on?

“I’ll take you home,” she added.

Gideon mumbled, “Edith, what took you so late…”

When he said that, both were taken aback.

Especially Gideon, who finally spoke again after a long pause. “Sorry, I thought things were still the same as before.”

Edith found herself lost in memories. Every time Gideon got drunk in the past, she always picked him up.

Perhaps habits were a headache, weren’t they?

Edith didn’t respond, just waiting for the waiter to finish the bill,

“Edith, why did you leave?”

This time, Gideon seemed sober, though his eyes were still bloodshot, his expression unmistakably clear.

“Why?”

Edith lowered her head. “There’s no reason.”

She assumed Gideon was drunk, just puzzled over why Edith chose not to be the lady of the Peterson family.

As for the reason, Edith had always believed that Gideon didn’t take it seriously, including her.

“Let’s go.”

After signing the bill, Edith stood up and told Gideon, “There’s no way I will help you up.

“It’s either you get up by yourself, or I call Ray,” she added.

Gideon suddenly laughed, causing Edith to be momentarily distracted. “How can you be so heartless…”

It sounded like a complaint, a murmur.

Edith ignored him, seeing Gideon struggle to his feet. She then walked out and called a ride

service.

She had drunk too, and planned to have the driver take her home first.

But unexpectedly, Gideon looked in pain, clutching his stomach, his face pale and a few beads of sweat on his forehead.

“What’s wrong

with you?”

Edith didn’t want to ask, but seeing Gideon’s agonizing condition, she feared something serious might happen.

The last thing Edith wanted was more trouble.

“Take me to the hospital,” Gideon said.

She thought, ‘Is he thinking about Danika at a time like this?’

Edith took a deep breath. “Mr. Peterson, if you can let me go back first, it won’t delay you to meet with someone.”

Gideon looked up, giving Edith a strange glance. “I might have a stomach problem.

“Where should I go if I’m not going to the hospital?”

Edith was speechless, not expecting Gideon to be serious, But seeing his pained expression, he didn’t seem to be lying.

Eventually, she had the driver take them to the hospital.

Hearing Edith mention the hospital’s name, where Danika was, Gideon spoke in a low voice. “Choose another one.”

Edith frowned at him but didn’t say much.

In the emergency room, the doctor’s diagnosis was alcohol poisoning, requiring hospitalization and costing a significant amount of money.

Edith, looking at the bill in her hand, frowned deeply.

She shouldn’t come in the first place.

“So noob.”

Edith whispered, thinking no one would hear, but a nurse wheeled Gideon out just then.

By sheer coincidence, he overheard.

Gideon, with an IV drip, looked a bit better. “Edith, do you even have a conscience?

“If I hadn’t taken those drinks for you, would I be in hospital?”

Edith was speechless.

Was he blaming her?

Edith followed the nurse to the private ward room she had arranged for him, worrying Gideon would be uncomfortable with the general ward.

Even at a time like this, Edith realized she was still considerate of him.

But Gideon seemed oblivious, restlessly lying there, persistently asking for water.

“The doctor said you can’t drink.”

“If

Edith expressed her helpless “have a complaint, take it up with the doctor.

What’s the point of telling me?”

“I just wanted to talk to you,” he said.

“Where are you going?

“Edith, you seem different…

“Why don’t you care about me? Why are you always against me? It’s not good at all. What’s so great about you anyway…”

Who would have thought that a drunken Gideon would lose all his usual composure?

Edith pressed her lips and resigned herself to sit back down.

She just had to accept her bad luck.

Gideon kept mumbling, and Edith sat in the chair beside the hospital bed, feeling sleepy.

Meanwhile, the two children who had been waiting for hours for Edith to return were becoming anxious.

Jeanne kept looking out the window, murmuring, “Mommy, when will you come back?”

Bonnie, tilting her head to one side, stayed close and coaxed, “How about playing another game with me? She should be back soon.”

“But Bonnie, you’re so silly.”

Bonnie felt like she wanted to cry. She couldn’t believe a four-year-old child was scorning her…

Ruben sat in front of the computer and typed a few codes, effortlessly locating Edith’s mobile phone.

It was a hospital.

Ruben glanced at Bonnie, then Jeanne, who seemed sleepy.

Ultimately, he just took his phone and sent an emoji to Edith’s phone, the little pig he always used.

Gideon had sobered up quite a bit in the hospital but couldn’t fall asleep.

Edith was sleeping in a chair beside him, her phone buzzing non-stop in her pocket. Gideon hesitated for a moment before taking it out.

Looking at the stream of pig emojis on the screen, Gideon felt a sense of familiarity.
