The perfect timing

Chapter 20

“Hey you two,” Kitty said and gave me a wink. “Fancy seeing you here. But what are you actually doing behind this bench?”

At her words Reece and I immediately parted and got up. You could see that Eric and Kitty were amused at our behavior and really tried hard not to laugh about us. We probably looked ridiculous and the situation we were in was kind of awkward as well.

“So?” Kitty asked again as none of us answered her.

Reece of course answered her with a question of his own and crossed his arms in front of his chest.

“I could ask you the same thing. What are the TWO of you doing here?” he questioned and you could hear the warning undertone in his voice.

But Kitty wasn’t impressed the slightest bit by her brothers warning tone and said as cool as ever and with confidence.

“We are on a date and you?”

For a moment there was a silence and Reece expression changed from unfazed to angry. He was practically boiling inside even if he already knew that these two were on a date. Eric and I didn’t say anything, which was probably the best thing we could do right now. We looked kind of helpless at each other and waited for Reece answer.

But Reece answer was nothing I ever expected him to say and so my head shot around as he talked.

“We are on a date too.”

Kitty’s eyes widened and suddenly she jumped up and down. “See I told you,” she exclaimed towards a surprised Eric. The guy was looking frantically from me to Reece and then he also smiled at us.

“Didn’t expect that,” he said, but he still went to Kitty and they gave each other a high five.

I wasn’t as happy as the two of them because one, I knew this was a complete lie, and second I asked myself why Reece said it.

But the guy just gave me this ‘play along‘ look and I would do as he asked me too, but in my own way.

“Yeahh,” I said walking towards Reece and wrapped an arm around his shoulder. “When we saw the two of you, Reece was kind of embarrassed to see you. It also it took him weeks to ask me out and tell me about his feelings.”

Kitty grinned at my words and Reece tried to elbow me hard, but I took a step away from him. “He even brought me flowers that day it was so cute,” I added with a really sweet voice.

Well, I would make this as awkward for Reece as I could and destroy all the manliness there was, for not asking me “about us fake dating”.

“Wow, big brother, I didn’t know you could be that romantic. I‘m really proud of you right now,” Kitty said and nodded happy about the outcome of this situation. I smiled because this was just too funny.

“We will leave the two of you then alone,” Eric then told us and the two of them left with a wink. Of course Reece and I waved back. And as we couldn’t see them anymore, I knew what was coming in a few seconds and Reece didn’t disappoint me.

“Are you fucking serious? I brought you flowers, and it took me weeks to ask you out?” he asked me enraged. But his bewildered expression didn’t affect me the slightest bit. What could he possibly do? Scream at me with hundreds of people around us or glare at me?

“Hey! You started this dating thing, so don’t be angry at me for playing along like you wished,” I answered him with a grin on my face.

“You are unbelievable. But sadly right,” he added and my eyes widened. Did Reece Matthews just really said I was right. Was I dreaming or something?

“Nevertheless you have to pay for this,” he smirked and then just walked away. Without me I may add and he was the own, who drove us here in the first place. Oh no he wouldn’t dare.

“Hey where are you going?” I screamed, and he turned around with a smirk on his face. People also did, but I just ignored them and waited for the boys answer. They could think what they want right now.

“Thanks to you I now have the perfect idea for her present,” he called back, but still walked away.

“And what about me?” I asked taken back.

“Take a bus or walk,” he answered before he disappeared behind the next corner.

He just didn’t leave me alone in this mall did he? But he really did. For half an hour I tried to find him, but it was like he never took a step into this mall. In the end I called a taxi who drove me home and tried to not make plans, how to kill someone. He just left me there. What kind of guy would do this?

The next day wasn’t any better because I was still angry at Reece. If he would make an appearance today, I didn’t know how I would react. Maybe I would hit him even if I wasn’t a violent person. I was so in my thoughts that I also didn’t notice my best friend approaching me until he coughed to get my attention.

He then leaned his body against the locker next to mine and was starring at me with an unreadable expression. It felt like weeks since I talked to him if I was being honest.

“Oh hi, I didn’t notice you there.”

“Yes, I know,” he answered me bitterly, and I knew something was wrong. “You also didn’t really notice my calls or messages do you?” Aiden stated, and I instantly felt guilty.

He was right, I didn’t even remember the last time we talked, because I was so occupied with the superhuman stuff and the M.E that I totally forget that I had a normal life which included especially Aiden.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered and looked into Aidens eyes with sorrow, to show him that I was really sorry. He huffed, but then the facade crumbled bit by bit and the old Aiden showed his face. The one I knew and loved.

“Okay, we can make a deal. Tonight at my house with food and some DVDs?” he asked me with a smile and I nodded, but then remembered that I had training after school. And Eric and I sometimes trained for over three hours. And the only thing I did afterwards was to slump into my lovely bed because I was too exhausted for anything else.

“What is is now?” My best friend then asked irritated as he saw the look on my face.

“I can’t tonight,” I told him apologetically and bit my lip.

“Why not?”

“I can’t tell you Aiden, it is complicated,” I tried to explain, but he wouldn’t hear me out.

“I don’t get you Celia. Everything was fine until one day you just cut me out of your life. Did I do something wrong or did I upset you?” he asked with a sad face.

“No Aiden you didn’t do anything wrong, it’s just that....” I couldn’t even end this sentence, because I didn’t know what to tell him. Weeks ago I would have told him immediately about something new in my life, but now I couldn’t, because this secret didn’t only involve me. There was Kitty, Eric, the other super humans and Reece.

Well, that guy had a perfect timing. Not.

“Celia, I need to talk to you,” he said and completely ignored that Aiden was also standing next to me. This made Aiden even angrier or just the fact that Reece appeared and he left with the words. “Maybe you can come to my important game next week if you have time.” And then he walked to his next class without another word. Did I lose my best friend? I didn’t hope so because I couldn’t imagine a life without him.

“Celia,” Reece tried again and this time he was whispering my name. “Are you okay?”

“No I’m not,” I stated angrily, and this was also the time I noticed tears streaming down my face. But I didn’t care if he saw me crying.

“What do you want Reece?” I scolded the next moment.

Reece wasn’t sure if he should answer me right now. I could see it in his face. He probably didn’t know, how to handle a crying a girl, but in the end he told me the reason he approached me in the first place.

“The girl she is nowhere to be found.”

Amazing, I thought sarcastically.
