Chapter 19
The situation was getting trickier by every second that passed by and so was the chance that this girl would see us.
“What do you mean you are working on it?” She hissed into her phone and you could literally see that she was really irritated by the person on the other side of the phone.
“No, no no! I don’t want to wait any longer and don’t tell me to calm down!”
I couldn’t make out the person she was talking to, but I could only imagine him or her trying to calm that girl down. She was really fiercely and probably someone you didn’t want to mess with.
For a few seconds there was a silence where the girl was only listening and so where we.
I was surprised that she didn’t notice us yet because I could swear my heart was hammering so loud in my chest. Reece on the other side was as calm as ever. If I didn’t know he was just standing right next to me, I wouldn’t have notice him. It was like this wasn’t the first time he was spying on someone.
But who knows? Maybe it wasn’t.
“Yeah, okay, bye,” the girl then mumbled and my attention went back to her again.
Suddenly there was a knock, and the girl turned around to open the door. Luckily she only threw her cigarette out of the window and let it open, so we could see what was going on in there. A guy, dressed in some sweatpants walked into the room. He must be around our age and he had jet black hair, which were cut shortly and styled into different directions. He kind of looked like a crazy professor.
“Here,” he said and put a large suitcase onto the table.
My brows furrowed at his action. What was going on right now and what was inside that suitcase?
But unfortunately I would never know because when the guy demanded money from the girl something strange and shocking happened.
The girl moved in one swift moment towards the guy and it almost looked like she was going to kiss him. But instead she looked deep into his eyes and whispered something I couldn’t make out.
Suddenly the guys eyes changed color and instead of being light brown they changed into a deep red.
I couldn’t stop myself from letting a gasp escape my mouth and even as Reece tried to calm it down by putting his hands about my mouth the girl still heard me.
Her head snapped immediately to the side, and she was now looking directly at us. But instead of being shocked, her lips turned into an what I only could describe as an evil smirk.
From that moment everything turned up side down. Reece was the first one to react, and he pulled me away from that staircase and away from her. I was a bit slower to process everything and let him drag me away. My brain only started to work probably again as we almost reached the bottom of the staircase.
But there was one thing I would never forget, these dark red eyes. Not only the boys eyes had changed color but also hers.
“Come on,” he said and finally I made my feet move by myself and ran away with him.
But I still had to turn around because one I was afraid that she was directly behind us and two I didn’t hear any footsteps following us. It made me happy and scared at the same time.
Though there was nothing and when I looked up and stared at the window, I could clearly see her standing there and watching us escaping.
She was even smoking another cigarette and had still that creepy smile on her face, like she was enjoying what she was seeing. And that was exactly what she was doing, she was enjoying that we were running away from her, like a deer caught by a hunter. This round was hers, but I wouldn’t let her win the next on.
“She isn’t even following us,” I exclaimed as we brought enough distance between the girl and us and Reece finally stopped running and we walked side by side.
“Are you okay?” he asked me then, and I nodded and tried to proceed what just had happened.
“Is she?” I began and then stopped mid sentence as her dark red eyes appeared right in front of me again.
“Superhuman?” Reece finished my sentence. “Yes, probably and I have to tell my mum about it. We better get into the M.E as fast as possible.”
“Your mum?” I wondered confused and turned my head to look at Reece properly, but he was avoiding my look.
“Yeah,” he mumbled, which made me suspicious. I knew his mum was the head of the M.E and that she had to know about the superhuman who had attacked Nancy and that we now knew where she was staying at, but something was wrong.
“What aren’t you telling me?” I asked him and stepped into his way, so he couldn’t escape.
As an answer Reece sighed and brushed his fingers through his hair, which made them really messy. I knew it wasn’t really the time to think about it, but he was really handsome with his messy hair.
“I know that I should have told you earlier, but I promised my mum and I actually thought it was for the better.”
“What did you do Reece?” I approached him carefully because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to hear his next words.
“Well, I know that my mother told you that you and Eric would be working after you had a special training on finding Nancy’s attacker. But I also knew and so my mother that it would take some time to get the two of you ready for the mission. So we made the plan, of me searching that person for you and I actually found some information. For example I knew that the person was a girl and was still living close,” Reece finished his explanation and I didn’t know how to react properly.
“So all the time you weren’t around, you were searching for her?” I more stated than asked and Reece nodded as an answer.
“Are you angry?” He whispered, and I stared at him in shock. Not only did he sound really apologetically, but I think it was also the first time Reece let me see his feelings.
“Are you crazy?” I asked him and I could see that Reece read my words in a wrong away. So I immediately explained myself.
“Of course I’m not angry. How could I be Reece? All this time you searched for her and this is what I wanted, to find that person, no matter how. Well, you could have really told me, but I’m not angry, more thankful,” I explained and gave him a smile.
“That’s actually a different reaction than I expected, but I’m really happy that you are not angry at me,” he told me relived and even smiled at me back. I think I just found a new side of Reece. One that I really want to see more often.
“Okay, what now?” I asked then and Reece immediately came to business.
“First, we go to the car and drive to the M.E and then we will make a plan, how to get that girl,” he explained. “Of course having you included,” he added as I still kept staying where I was.
“Alright, then lets go!” I said, and we made our way back to the mall.
But instead of walking straight towards Reece car on the parking lot, we just saw something that made Reece stop just a few meters away from his car. Well, more two people than something. Eric and Kitty were walking into the mall, big smiles on their faces and into a deep conversation.
“What is he doing here with her?” Reece angrily growled, and I sighed. He really had to get over the fact that his sister was probably going on dates. Or more specific going on dates with Eric.
I get that he just wanted to protect his sister, and that she seemed a bit young in his eyes for a date, but they were just chatting and walking into the mall, probably getting something to eat or drink.
“Reece, let them,” I wanted to say, but the guy had a different idea.
“Hey, where are you going?” I called as he just left me standing there and so I run behind him.
“Reece,” I tried again as I caught up to him.
“I just want to look and see what they are going to do,” he explained with an innocent face, but I knew under that mask he was planning Eric’s death. On one side this was really cute, how he was so protective of his sister, but on the other more realistic side he was exaggerating and kind of creepy.
“There are probably on a--” I started, but suddenly Reece pulled me behind a bench.
He then showed me with his hand to be quiet and I looked to the side to see what was going on. Kitty and Eric were sitting now at a smoothie bar just a few meters away from us.
“We are not seriously going to spy on them,” I exclaimed and Reece glared at me for talking so loud, so I lowered my voice.
“Reece we are looking ridiculous and people are staring at us,” I told him as I saw a couple shaking their heads at us.
“I don’t care, just let them look.”
“A smoothie bar, how cliche,” he then whispered, and I gave him a little push. Eric was after all my partner and he didn’t need to made everything bad that he was saying or doing.
“And what did you do on your first date, get coffee,” I mumbled sarcastically more to myself, but the boy heard me and huffed.
“You see, I actually went to the cinema with my first date,” he said and now it was my time to snort.
“And you really think that is not cliche?” I laughed and Reece gave me an icy look.
The both of us must be nosier than we thought because suddenly someone cleared his throat right next to us. And as we both looked up, Kitty and Eric were towering over us. Kitty had her arms crossed in front of her white short dress and with an odd amused look on her face, she was staring at us. Eric on the other side was grinning at us and first I didn’t get their looks. But as I looked at Reece and then at me it suddenly made sense. The both of us were kneeling really closely next to each other that it kind of looked like we were on a date and didn’t want them to see us. Oh man, what did I get myself into?
