The Otherside: Alice: Tough Decisions (Book 6)

Chapter 8

When I woke up I looked at my alarm clock. It was 11AM. I slowly made my way down stairs. When I saw Duncan, I remembered what happened last night. I went into the kitchen and Christina was there preparing lunch.

“Grandma, I am so sorry I didn’t help you with Duncan this morning. I should have set an alarm.”

She turned around from the stove and put a hand on my shoulder. “Calm down, it’s fine. You needed your rest. I can take care of him, so don’t worry about it.”

“But it’s my fault.”

She pulled me into a hug. “I see a little bit of your grandfather in you. He has a soft spot for humans too. I will make sure he stays asleep and never has to deal with the bloodlust a new vampire feels.”

“Thanks...” I paused for a moment. “What if he wants to be a vampire?”

Grandma Christina shook her head. “He doesn’t have a choice in this. This is what is best for him.”

“But bloodlust isn’t that hard to control; I can teach him.”

“No, you don’t get it.” She motioned me to follow her and I did. We went to her room and over to a bookshelf. She picked out a book and handed it to me. It looked really old. “This is all the risks humans have with coming into contact with beings from Otherside. It is categorized by species. Look up vampires and you will understand. There is a reason why it is frowned upon to fall in love with a human. It is all documented here.”

I took the book from her hands, it had a simple title called “Humans.”

“I guess I better start reading.” I said looking back up at her from the book.

“I am not saying humans and beings from the Otherside should not be together, or I would not be with your grandfather. I am telling you to be careful if you do.” she said with a faint smile.

“Thanks.” I said with a fake smile and took the book to my room. I sat at my desk.

The book did not just have all the risks, it talked about basic biology of humans and every other specie. I first skimmed for vampire to get to the issue at hand. If a human turns into a vampire, they go mad with bloodlust; well that is the shortened story. I got caught up in the book and spent all day reading all the sections. I realized all the things I would have to protect Duncan from. I sighed and closed the book. I leaned back in the chair, and stared at the ceiling trying to take it all in.
